Hi people need some help. Building an htpc, 2 issues.
#1 only has stereo output. i need 5.1 output but can't find a usb or pci-e sound card that's reasonable priced. tv has SPDIF
#2 only DisplayPort output on the onboard, using a converter it can't do 4k. I want 4k60 i have a old gpu but the power required for the gpu doubles the pc power usage. also doesn't fit in the sff case.

Any help will be appreciated.

Buy a better adaptor that supports 4K?

Should be able to get one from Amazon for ~R500 all in.

The Ryzen R5 3600 is really good value for money and the 1660ti. But these are midrange parts do you want higher end?

No, just mid range like my old Sandybridge B3, I do have an HD5750 card that is compatible with the PCI-e x16 slot.

I see AMD Ryzen has a better deal over Intel with their prices so some advice would be appreciated. My budget isn't looking that great and I prefer a quad-core CPU over anything else. I play games now and then, spend more time watching TV series / movies and then there's IT related work which I"ve been out of for too long (6 years, I think) so I'm not too clued up about AMD's products. Any advice would be really appreciated.

My general thinking is to lump all my personal data together in a 4TB external and go for 120GB SSD as the boot drive. I may get another SDD later on for my linux OS (either Deepin or Kali).

Just nothing too fancy, I'm not a big gamer and I don't game online anymore so a mid-range PC should suffice for my needs. That HDD that crashed had all my TV series on it so I'm a bit disappointed as the quality isn't what it used to be. My first HDD that I purchased lasted me 15 years. My dad had a Seagate Portable Backup that only lasted him 1 year before it failed then I send it to Seagate in Coventry (UK) for an RMA, apparently according to DHL they turned it around and tried to send it back to us. So I have lost faith in Seagate's product reliability and their customer services suck big time.

I am not too sure about the processor compatibility on the motherboard and the ram too. Any compatibility issues with any of these components?

PS. I already have a Corsair VS650 650w PSU, still new, purchased in February this year. The AMD HD5750 card is about 7 or 8 years old now, still happy with it for now.

Another thing get a bigger ssd, for the price difference a 250gb SSD isn't that bad.
Especially as Windows can take a good portion of a 120gb.

What's your budget?

Do you have a monitor, keyboard, mouse already?

What resolution is the monitor if you have one, what do you use the pc for and which games do you play?

The 2080ti is overkill for the 2700. 2070 super would be much cheaper and you will almost remove all bottlenecking. I paired my 2700 with Vega64. Perfect fit. 5700XT would be the way to go if you want to go AMD.


edit. The above is valid if you tend to keep the 2700 and not planning to upgrade to something faster in the near future.

yup got a mouse, keyboard and screen. 1920x1080 for my Samsung Syncmaster 2333 (23"). I plan to upgrade the screen at a later stage as it's also old too.

As for budget, I will be saving up per week after I get paid and minus my rent, that's the money I have for saving up for this PC. So give or take in the next 5 weeks, I should have enough to order the parts.

ATM, I'm playing Titan Quest and nothing else. Now and then I'll have the urge to play Skyrim and that AMD graphics card still works well.

Yes I took my PC with me on the plane - just packaged into a box. Unfortunately, let me tell you it's a very bad idea. Airport workers do NOT care about your stuff - my window door has a slight crack in it and a part of my Coolermaster Storm Scout has a dent and scratch somewhere. Your stuff gets thrown around.

Supplier has swapped SSD for a new one. Considering rather upgrading to a bigger / better one.

Options:

Keep 128GB DRAM less with R/W: 1800MB/s, 1500MB/s and pay in nothing
Upgrade to 512GB with DRAM R/W: 3500MB/s, 2800MB/s and pay in R800+ bucks
