@Morpheos I actually came here to post my own looking for help post, but incidentally I was looking at a similar processor to upgrade my old 3rd gen i5 to.

I had a look at takealot, and saw this (https://www.takealot.com/intel-core-i5-9400f-2-90-ghz-6-core-processor/PLID56051995) at around R3500 , but then as you say wootware also has the 9400F but for R3067. I was wondering if these two are the same processor or similar enough ?

What would be a semi decent Mobo to go with that for around or less that 2K ? If anyone else has some advice , it is also much appreciated

Buy AMD this time around...it's almost certain you will get a better all-around PC going with AMD (unless free parts fall in your lap like Morpheos's buddy). What do you use your PC for and what kind of budget are you looking at?

Hi @Neoprod , such an awesome reply, Im so sad I didnt engage in this community earlier.

Anywhoo, I think you're actually right, after more forum trawling I see this deal (https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-Processor-Wraith-Cooler/dp/B07B428M7F/?pldnSite=1 ) and since I dont know much about PCs past the basics I compared the Intel 9400F with the AMD Ryzen here (https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i5-9400F-vs-AMD-Ryzen-7-2700X/3397vs3238) and it seems AMD is coming out tops for most stuff.

I think it would be best If I follow the forum rules format to answer the 2nd part of your question.

Current Specs: Intel i5-3470 @3.2 Ghz / 8GB DDR3 / ASRock B75M / NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti / 600W (Some cheap brand, was a a replacement) / Kind Broken Cooler Master Something (I want to replace this too) / 500 gb HDD
[*]Budget: R5500? (For mostly an SSD, A motherboard and a new processor, everything besides the case)
[*]Main Use: Gaming/Map Work (remote sensing/ GIS) /General Usage
[*]Monitor Resolution: 1920X 1080
[*]Are you going to re-use any parts?: If possible GPU/ PSU/RAM
[*]When do you need your build by? : No set date
[*]Are you going to overclock? : No

Thank you so much for the helpful reply

Not gonna happen at that budget. You can't reuse the ram either, everything new will require ddr4. You might want to look at used bundles on carbonite.

The Z170 chipset will support 6th gen (Skylake) and 7th gen (Kaby Lake)....both will be hard to find new and over-priced (so it's good the motherboard was free ). potterH seems to have some i5 7500's secondhand - check what else he's got that might work for you and go from there - http://www.mineaway.co.za/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=2543.

Edit: I may not have been clear - Intel doesn't currently allow later generations of processors to be used on older series motherboards (they could but that's a different discussion). At best, you get 2 generations of CPU per chipset so anything after the 7th gen will not work on a z170 motherboard (this includes the 9400F).

Shot, I'll have a look.

I second this.

You could keep an eye out for a nice Ryzen 5 1600/2600 and B450 bundle with 16GB DDR4 RAM for around R4500 - R5000 and take it from there.

Then when Ryzen 4xxx drops, slot in a nice cheap Ryzen 5 3600 for a nice boost in single thread performance

What about just Mobo/CPU and Ram?

You should be able to get a ryzen 5 2600, b450 MB & 16GB ram for ~R5500

The cheaper B450 boards are in short supply online and you'll have to check that your chosen ram will work at it's rated speed on the MB.

For R6k (all inclusive of customs, vat etc) you can get a 3600 + B450 +16GB from Amazon but should you have warranty issue it means return shipping to the US. Chances of CPU & RAM failing are slim so you could potentially get those from amazon and the MB locally, you'll have to figure out if it's worth the risk & ~R500 savings.

I am juggling items around in amazon cart trying to get these 3 items close towards 6K , any direction on items would cool :p , currently im looking at :
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6-Core, 12-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor with Wraith Spire Cooler $199.99
  • MSI Arsenal Gaming AMD Ryzen 1st and 2nd Gen AM4 M.2 USB 3 DDR4 DVI HDMI Crossfire ATX Motherboard (B450 Tomahawk) $99.99
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15 Desktop Memory Kit - Black (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15) $70.82
But all these from amazon come to about R6700

I did see the Mobo you mentioned (B450) on Wootware for R1800 :
Gigabyte B450 AORUS ELITE AMD B450 Ryzen Socket AM4 ATX Desktop Motherboard

And then I see an upgrade deal kinda on Evetech for exactly R5500
  • MSI B450M PRO-M2 MAX USB 3.2 AM4 RYZEN Motherboard +
  • AMD RYZEN 5 3600 35MB GameCache Up to 4.2GHz CPU +
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (1x 8GB) 2666MHz DDR4 Gaming Memory + FREE DELIVERY !
Am a bit more in the know after all this tech talk, but from what I see the EveTech Deal may be the best local option? And I can upgrade to 16Gb whenever. Any thoughts on this? Also would my GPU still work with these items?

You're aware of evetech after sales complaints?

That ram is not cool, you need faster ram for ryzen 3200MHz and you need two sticks for dual channel operation

Anyone know a place that stocks them besides HashRate?

Hi Guys, quick question, might not be the correct thread but I am hoping to get some advice, I need to replace my current gaming headset (corsair HS50) Looking to spend about R2500 max. Any suggestions? I have read that gaming headsets are not great and that a good headphone and mic combo is better, but I have no idea what to look for.
