The PC Build Thread

So my SSD arrived this morning.

So tips on least effort, getting Windows and my software on to the SSD. Old HDD will be going into an adapter and replacing the DVD ROM drive.
so we were in the same boat at more or less the same time. I attached my new SSD to the system and used the free personal version of Macrium Reflect to clone the old HDD. It was a VERY old HDD, but the process was pretty straightforward and took me 1h20min for an old 180gb drive (such a slow drive...was taking like 10 minutes to finish booting). Everything works like a charm and boot-up times are back to a very respectable 10 or so seconds. What a difference!

I used Samsung Migration Tool, that came with Samsung Magician, also took around an hour and a half, for 292 Gb of data.

Laptop is smoother, apps start up much faster, almost feels like a new Laptop.

PC received from Wootware , prebuild and working out of the box. I see they've even done the little things like proper xmp setup etc. So this was a first having someone else build it and ship the complete unit from CT to PT. Kan nie se dat ek nie my kak af gestress het nie. I mean 30k is 30k...

So unit is sent prebuild and packaged as well as humanly possible to avoid damage, you get all the things that was in the boxes, the boxes and 2 page check list. All in all it arrives in 2 boxes; one pc and one with all the things.

I also got a new PC from Wootware about a week ago. Built it myself though as it's part of the fun for me. Also stressed about how it would be couriered, but they did a stellar job and packaging all the parts. Nothing was moving in the box.

Also mine was shipped to Cape Town so not as hectic a travel as yours.

I did my SO's but time spent vs stress; I've gone the prebuild route. I'm not too keen on handling a 15k gpu or related + screw driver gone wild.

Don't bother me, when the Kids where younger, I build theirs and their friends computers, setup LAN's for them, fixed the works, and sometimes donated parts.

My first gaming PC I built I stabbed my motherboard trying to get the heat-sink on the CPU. I was devastated, but luckily the retailer swapped it out for me. Back then those AMD clips dug holes in your fingers, but better that then holes in your mobo :D

WTF, Wootware is in Cape Town and you are in Pretoria, I thought it was vice versa, Wootware in Gauteng and you down here in slaapstad?
Does Wootware allow collections?

It is an option but they are in the armpit of Cape Town... Somerset West :(

"Collection from Wootware's Offices:
Clients may also collect their purchases directly from Wootware Computers in Somerset West. There may be a waiting period of 1-3 business days after placing the order, before you can collect. We will inform you via SMS or email once your order has arrived."

Prebuilt is the way go, I am never going to assemble another PC myself.

I have built enough PC's in the last 25+ years

I've done enough in the mustek electrics slave pit with x pcs per hour when I started out. haha. Also not forgetting about all the a+ technician kak I did for them afterwards. The worst was arrive at IC and you open the door and its stacked with pcs left to right, bottom to top and you actually move in there for the next few days fixing pcs.

I do it so rarely that it's still kinda fun. In 2019 I built my first PC since 2009, than I did another 2 in 2020 during lockdown, cause I had spare parts laying around for one and I upgraded my sons.
Now in 2022 I replaced my case and power supply so it was almost like another build.

Those were the days

Started my working "career" by getting an A+ and then being a technician for a small hardware/software reseller.

Making enough money to fund beer + petrol

looking to upgrade from my phanteks entho pro. need to support palit 3080ti gamerock and 360mm radiator on top. Any good deals out there. looking to spend R200 max including at least 3x front and 1 x rear fans.

The last PC I built, about 2 years ago, was from Wootware, and it required a motherboard RMA, but at first we suspected memory, so that was sent back, only to be tested fine and returned to me, which then resulted in returning the Motherboard - That probably scarred me

That did let me switch from a "low-tier" B550 for a "medium-tier" X570, so silver linings I guess
