I hate the stock coolers that intel use... I bought the hyper 212 evo for my 3570k.
 
Yah I must say I thought it was quite a nice case and with all those fans quite a good price. Just needed some confirmation.

Planning a new build and have lost touch witheverything pc related over the last few years.

I also put a new rig together in May after many years, but you'll get up to speed soon enough.

The V6 cooler is MASSIVE! Loads of people finding issues with it not fitting in their case, mostly RAM and GPU clearance issues.

Clearance on the AsRock mobo will be fine though. If I were you, I'd rather get the CM Hyper212X.

i7 is better for a simple reason: It's faster...
But for the price of the i7 I think it's overkill, since the i5 4670k can perform almost the same for a lot less.
 
Thanks for the feedback, I had a look at some pics of the cooler in builds and it seems that it will be too big for what I am planning. I decided to rather go with a small water-cooling system for the CPU.

Thank you for your suggestion on the cooler, I want to have a very simplistic look colour wise though, pure red and black with other parts/colours few and far between. So for now, the CM Hyper212X is out. (looks like a great cooloer though and also quite big)

The cooler is big yeah (not as big as that V6 though), I think the water-cooling will be the perfect solution for the color theme.
 
How long does AIO water coolers typically last? I've read on the net it's +-2yrs.
 
Not really a pc component but didn't want to start a new thread.

New to over-ear headphones and I'm looking at getting the Sennheiser HD 419 for R700 from Takealot. Have read many good things about it. Any other over-ear headphones in the price range I should have a look at?
 
Hi Guys,

Just looking for some advice as I am looking to upgrade my pc.

Currently Im running a AMD PhII 955 Black Edition on a Asus M4a785D-M Pro mobo.

Now the mobo definitely has to be upgraded as it only supports Sata3 which is holding my SSD back as well as only DDR2 ram.

My question, and mostly for gaming purposes is, is there any need to upgrade to a better CPU or would it be better to rather throw the extra money into a gfx card ( currently running a HD7850 )?

How much are you willing to spend?


You're in quite a pickle, since your GPU is still well capable. But, you already mentioned what you need to upgrade. That is your mobo. Thus, you'll need a new mobo and DDR3 RAM. Takealot currently has an excellent price on 8GB Crucial 1866 RAM which you should get as quick as possible (before the find out that their pricing is completely wrong). So depending on your budget, you should get a new mobo, RAM, and CPU. Also depending on your budget will be the decision between AMD and Intel.

Budget is as minimal as possible as I would prefer to use the money elsewhere than sink it to something that could be able to run fine for another 2 yrs or so. But max would be around 5k.

Just had a look at that crucial ram. Very nice price especially for an 8gb module.

Oh and I'm not into OC'ing which i assume will make a big difference on mobo price range. Just wouldn't want something that will be useless in a year.

My current setup has lasted over 4yrs ( except the 7850. before it was a 4890 )

I think your HD7850 will be fine for now. That could be your next big upgrade. For now, get a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM.

If you are not interested in OCing, then you can settle for a H87 motherboard. The ASRock Fatal1ty H87 Performance is an excellent motherboard for the price (Recently built a PC for my boss with one). (R1500)

CPU should be an Intel i5. Intel Core i5-4670 would be perfect. R2700, you can get it cheaper at some online stores such as Esquire but remember to include shipping in your total cost calculation.

Then the RAM you should take that Takealot RAM asap. Although it won't quite match the red looks of your mobo, looks should be your last priority when it comes to building on a budget.

Considering all of the above, you are looking at around R5k. I provided links below for the mobo and CPU.

Cool, thanks for the advice. Will certainly look into it.

I am going to try and recoup some costs from my old setup, which would include 4x 2GB DDR2-800 chips. Is the R1500 mark about right or not. Would also include a Corsair H50 for the chip as I have had a look on the box and it is not compatible with that socket.

Motherboard: MSI B85 G43 Gaming
CPU: Intel i5 4440
RAM: G.Skill Sniper 1600 8GB
PSU: Corsair VS550
HDD: 1TB WD Blue
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD7850 2GB OC

Will add a custom cooler later, as well as more HDD's etc.
Also bought a Steelseries Apex Raw Keyboard and Corsair M65 mouse...brilliant input devices. The mouse is awesome and the keyboard comfortable and solid.

The sniping button is perfect for games like WoT.

I am able to play World of Tanks at maximum graphics and AA on a 23" FullHD while getting at least 60 fps, some maps even go up to 80. Being the game I built it for, I am a very happy man. :love:

Coming from a laptop with Intel hd4000 graphics and barely being able to play on low...this is a huge improvement. :D

Nice build! I love WoT! I played with my HD7870 LE (Myst) and an i3 and I got 43fps - 60fps. Once I upgraded my CPU to i5 4670K I get a constant 60+fps. Which clearly shows that this game is actually CPU intensive, the same can be said about your i5 giving you those frames :)

My next mouse is going to be the M65, it got very good reviews and it seems you are happy with it as well.
