I needed it to fit in my tv stand cupboard. This brought along some new problems...When I enter BIOS, the temp starts dropping from 60 to 43 again.

The cooling really sucks in this case and I think I'm going to have to let it stand on the side of my TV stand. So my project failed...R1100 down the drain.

Error: the current bios setting do not fully support the boot device. And something about csm error.

Reset the BIOS. It would fix it I guess.

A fresh install fixed the job. I then updated my bios and everything seems to be working fine now. Rebuilt my main pc back into the coolermaster Sniper case... It doesn't seem like I would ever be able to hide this case in the living room.

The BitFenix phenom is now in the bed room.
 
Input on a PC build I have been quoted on

I am in the market for a Home Office desktop PC & I would appreciate feedback / comment of the following PC specs that have been suggested to me.

I have specified 2 x HDDs as I prefer OS & Documents/photos to be on different HDDs, and HDDs are so cheap nowadays. I do not want to go to SSDs at this stage. The PC is solely for my SO to use, and she needs the big-ish 23" screen for her ageing eyes :twisted:

The 8GB RAM may be overkill for the PC's use, but it's also cheap these days

Hey guys, I have a budget of between R5000-R6000 for a new PC. My current specs are only good enough to play things on low, and the ol' gal has been starting to whine (needed to replace the PSU last week). Anyway, I'm okay-ish with my current case, and as mentioned I have bought a new PSU, it's a 620W Bronze certified Seasonic. I'm also happy with my current GPU, a Nvidia GTX 550 ti. I'm looking for comments/suggestions for boards, RAM, and CPU. I'm currently eyeing an Intel i54670k CPU. As for RAM, looking for 8 GB, a friend suggested 1600 MHz speed, saying anything more than that would be useless/overkill. This makes some sense since I see most motherboards only support up to 1600 MHz, any boards that support higher are a lot pricier. The board I'm looking at is the Gigabyte GA-H87M-HD3, which can only support up to 1600 Mhz anyway. The RAM is 4GBx2 Transcend JetRam DDR3-1600. Would this be a good build?

If you want to get the 4670K or even 4770k you need to get z87/z97. No point getting unlocked CPU when you can't overclock. As for RAM if you really want cheapest get the 1600mhz and get 2x8GB sticks if can as that will be the best bet. You know 8GB might be enough but 16GB is just to be safe. We starting to see native 64bit games and memory might become a bit of an issue. You need to have some overhead for games and other apps you use. Other than that it should be good to go.

So I'm about to buy the components to build a new PC. I'm hoping to get some advice before I pull the trigger. These are the components that I intend to buy:


CPU: AMD FX-6300
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz (2x4GB Kit) CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B
PSU: Corsair VS650 650w
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 3TB ST3000DM001
SSD: Crucial M500 240GB
Chassis: Zalman Z3 Plus


I will be doing quite a bit of gaming, and some CAD. Also quite a bit of media and web browsing.
I don't really need games to run at the very best, but I do want them to perform really well. My monitor is 1600x900, so I wont have full HD res anyway. I came to this set up trying to get the most bang for my buck while staying within my budget.

I don't know which graphics card I will use as yet, but it may be a 560ti or something of that range. I won't need more than one. I may possibly do some overclocking in future. And would probably increase the RAM to 16GB as my need grows. I also would like to have a TV connected along with my monitor, and have a DVD drive that I will put in, not that that should make any difference.

I want to know if any of these components have any problem's/issues, or whether they will all work well together.

Getting all components from Rebeltech and takealot. Comes to about R8,800 without a graphics card.

No...no... I am going to sound like a fan boy over HURRR!!! but don't buy a 3TB drive. Rather use that money for an Intel system.

Do you have an old computer? you can use the PSU hopefully.

What is your budget?

Lol, I actually looked at options for an intel system. And while I know I could probably get more performance with a lower end i5 cpu, the extra cost made it a no no. I too was sceptical about the AMD chip, but my research found that it would actually be really good for what I want to spend. I need that extra storage, and would rather get it now. Plus I still have a couple 250GB's that I will slot in for backup. Don't wanna have to put in yet another drive later.

My current PC is on its last legs, and it was an off the shelf preassembled can. Apart from the DVD drive which I barely use at all, I will not reuse a single thing from it.

I don't think I would even max out this cpu, apart from certain games, and then too its fairly easy to overclock if that does happen. Longevity isn't too much of an issue as well, I figure (hope) that I would be able to build myself a non-budget machine before this one is obsolete or dead.

My budget was R8000, so I really don't want to spend more just for a bit more juice I may not need.

How I selected the components:
Price was definitely the main option. I used the rebeltech website to get an idea of what, currently is available and for what price.

Requirements:
It will run Ubuntu 12.04 and I would like to play DOTA2 without lag on medium settings.

Questions:
Power Supply: What power supply would I need to run the above setup
Will this graphic card work for Ubuntu and DOTA2
What could I get for the above budget that would meet my requirements, I have no preference i.t.o. of brands/hardware etc.
 
Positive Airflow vs Negative Airflow

As it stands my PC will seem to have 2x80mm intake fans, 1x120mm intake fan (which I want to switch with a 140mm) and then 2x120mm exhaust fans that are top mounted and 1x120mm exhaust fan near the mobo io shield. Then if my PSU is small enough I'll have a bottom mounted 120mm fan - which I assume is intake.

Don't ask about the 80mm intake fans ;)

Any particular reason why you want 2x8 gb DDR3 RAM sticks? RAM is *** expensive.

I'd rather you get 2x4 gb DDR3, which, if you're gaming you won't notice any difference between 8-16 gb DDR3 RAM.

i5 is good, like really good, by far the best component of your system.

Motherboard is fine for what you want, just be aware that if you are using 5.1+ surround sound you will need a sound card because that one doesn't support it.

I don't recommend that GPU, at all, you did not state at what resolution you will be gaming though, so it's hard to say. Personally I'd rather you spend R1600 buy a Radeon R7 260x and get 8gb DDR3 RAM instead. This will also provide the superior gameplay experience for DOTA2.

I recommend installing these components yourself, especially with that mobo it's so basic you will essentially be playing grown up lego.

The Radeon R7 260x is basically a rebranded HD 7790 and overclocked - giving almost the same performance as a GPU I paid R2500 for at release (7850), so its a great deal and tbh, you can max the majority of games nowadays if you combo that with an i5 and you're gaming at 1080p.

The R7 260x also only uses a TDP of 115W, so you can run any 500w quality PSU with room to spare.

Ok just a quick question, I'm looking at replacing my PC for Photoshop, Lightroom, Premier and After Effects. Dual 8 core Xeon with GTX 780, single 8 core plus Quadro or faster (clockspeed) single 6 core plus high end Quadro? Google sucks for this.

Edit - there will be much more PS and Lightroom work than anything else, but there will be a reasonable amount of Premier, After Effects and 3ds Max going on as well.

You can disregard the 750 from that equation immediately - it's about 30% weaker than both the other two cards.

So you're actually asking 7850 vs R7 260x - and they are pretty equal.

Looking at these benchmarks though - http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1044?vs=1076

The 7850 is superior if only slightly, so to give you an irrefutable answer - whichever you prefer between those 2, comparing price vs performance.
