Hey guys, interested in knowing your thoughts for the following barebone kit I'm interested in building:
CPU: AMD FX-6300
Motherboard: MSI 970 Gaming
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 2x4GB 1600Mhz DDR3

Comments on first build

Hi,

I've been planning and researching my first build for 2 years and finally had the cash to splash.

All components have already been ordered or received but won't mind some comments on if I actually did a good job or not over last 2 years... (started with a Sandy Bridge, H77 type of build).

Currently computing in the household is done on a 2002 Mecer laptop and a 2011 Lenovo netbook - so a substantial upgrade is required. I tried to get the best components (read a lot of reviews) within my budget (originally R 10000 for everything) but obviously new technology, EOL components replaced by more expensive ones and going a bit bigger or better here and there for a few bucks more, caused me to go over budget...

The build:

CPU: Intel i5 4460 (Pinnacle - R 2529)
Mobo: ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Performance (Rebeltech - R 1432)
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury 2x4GB (Rebeltech - R 1098)
GPU: Sapphire Radeon 260X 2GB (Rebeltech - R 1971)
PSU: Seasonic S12II 520w (Rebeltech - R 591)
Case: Corsair Graphite 230T Black No Window (Rebeltech - R 948)
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB (Kalahari - R 747 less R 100 voucher)
SDD: Adata SP610 (Rebeltech - R 908)
ODD: Samsung DVD Writer (Raru - R 191)
Monitor: Samsung S22D300H (Rebeltech - R 2135)
Speakers: Creative SBS A250 (Rebeltech - R 334)
Headphone: Sennheiser HD201 (Game - R 450)
Keyboard: Logitech K200 (Loot - R 194)

Total = R 13 528

I'll be running Win7 64-bit and will be playing games, watching movies, burning DVD's, general home computing. Don't plan on overclocking.

So, let me know what you think...

So, let me know what you think...

For R28 extra you could have bought a Powercolor R9 265 on Wootware, which is better than the 260X. For R400 more you could have bought the Powercolor R9 270X, also on Wootware.

You could have gotton an ~R800 MB, R600 Case and pumped the savings into a much better GPU.

+1 You splashed out on premium components and got a weak gpu

Rather wait for stock to arrive.

I'm just wondering if these R9 200 series cards will have full DX12 hardware support?

SSD: 120GB is very small, you could pick up a 256GB for ~R500-600 more I think so you can put the GPU savings towards that and save a bit more before getting an SSD?

Not a bad idea, will probably want a few games on the SSD, thanks ^_^

I'll start reading up on DX12

I currently have the powercolor 7850 and never had an issue. They really are well priced

Rebeltech delivered the wrong card! So I have an opportunity to redeem myself. Does anyone have experience with the Powercolor R265 available at Wootware?

The replies made me do some more reading and I actually did screw up the balance of the system...

The 265 is still not a great card, dunno if you have any budget left but you should be looking at R9 280/285/280X or a GTX 960. To answer your question there's nothing wrong with wootware or a powercolor 265.

Can't you just return the whole order? :D

280x for the win or gtx 970

no hyperthredded i3 can play games

but keep the i5,games will get more demanding etc,and just to get cpu bottleneck out of the way, some games are more cpu hungry and will need the exstra cpu power

drew, whats your buget,i didnt really followed this thread

Budget is pretty much unlimited, just depends on how long I am willing to wait, buying one piece at a time. Will just get the i5

the 970 is a great card but the ram issue is kinda $hit

if its unlimited get the 980 :)

but 970 is a great card even with the 3.5gb
960 its ok but me personally are disappointed in it

just remember AMD use more power,so u need to get a bigger psu,the 285 is not bad for the price
but i am a nivida/intel fan :P

I think you're looking at the wrong posts ;)

My build is further up - looking at the 280x

oh sorry didnt see

ya 280x is not bad :)

or u can look 2nd hand and maby pickup a 290 for the same price :)

EDIT:

http://www.takealot.com/gigabyte-amd-radeon-r9-280x-graphics-card-3072mb-gddr5/PLID28374067

get a 970!!
for that price

and a 970 beats the 290x by tiny bit

so much more powerfull card at the same price

So with GTA 5 out and Far Cry 4 not playing nicely on my current system, I've decided it's time upgrade from this A8 5600k.

Here's what I've decided on so far:
MSI Z97 GAMING 5 (First time buying MSI)
i5 4690k
Galax GTX970
Either H100i or the new H100i GTX (Damn you Linus!):D

What I've got so far:
8gb Ram @ 1866mhz
Corsair 760T:love:

Can anyone recommend a decent SSD? What size would be acceptable considering the size of games these days? Does all your games have to be installed on the SSD? Will it affect performance that much? These are the questions of an SSD noob.

I hear the Samsung Evo 850 is the best route.
