Was wondering how that panned out for you.

It was an incredibly satisfying upgrade.
I think some of the old threads I've read on other forums about people who have done the same were mostly multi-year old threads, so the improvement over the years regarding OS, Games & some software when it comes to parallel processing wasn't so obvious back then. Things have definitely changed.

Plus, being old hardware and all there's the extra upshot of doing "zero phucks given" upgrades, so I went through the entire process while drinking copious amounts of Gin, which made everything even more impressive.

Now excuse me, gotta go dig for a Disprin somehwere.

Yip, I told RaptorSA to go i7 as well, see his post above. 4c/4c no longer enough, my 4690 spends much of it's life at 100% or close these day. used 4c/8t i7 sorts this out.
Only thing I've seen is that people charge quite a bit for a I7 fourth gen??? I mean I've not really seen one for a good price.

I bought a 4770 for I think it was R1300 but I've seen people still ask R2000 for a 4790 and R3000 for a 4790k which is just ridiculous.

4770k just sold for R1500. 2x 4790 @ R1500 neg as well.

R3k for a 4790k is stupid though.

Yeah I was hoping they'd be in the R1300 under mark :-) just being optimistic, then selling my one for R500 or R600 so to only have spent R600 extra on the better chip. But for now I'll scan the pages, I'll keep the i-5 it is for the family PC so it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

And the vrms on asus basically suck.

For the money the msi tomahawk is a great board.
Strange that you say that as the vrm tier list posted by yourself, says the X470-F vrm are high end. But yes the other Asus boards seem lacking in that department.

The same VRM can be had on the MSI board next door - crammed into an ITX board no less, for over a grand cheaper.

Asus is the Intel of motherboard manufacturers :p

A few of their top boards are ok but you gonna pay for that while a tomahawk with decent vrms go for ~R2100.

Now look at the average overclock for say a 2600, seems to be in the 4.2GHz range for most people. An expensive X470-F is not gonna help you much if any in getting higher OCs over a Tomahawk as you're limited by the silicon. To me it does not make any sense spending 70+% more on a MB with limited returns unless you're interested in more ports, bling etc

Argh bought 3 RGB fans but only have 2 headers, thought there was a daisy chain on the fans but doesn't seem like it.
Though these fans do speed up to 2500rpm Vs my old ones which only went to 1200 so there's that.

Which probably means more noise but not always...
Yeah only gets noisy when it gets warm. So far it's averaging 900rpm which is about the same.
Just disappointed about the RGB sigh

Input much appreciated, but I am after better audio quality & ram compatibility. I will be overclocking but like you mentioned they all do roughly the same. I'll wait and see what happens when X570 get released as they not be cheap and they might lower the prices of existing boards. I guess I can wait for B550 but that will be a long wait.

Great my 3 month old Transcend M.2 drive seems to have died during the night. Had my Plex database on as well so now Plex won't start. Also my Virtual machines. Great start to the day :)

Eish read similar issues with HP. Now I'm worried. Luckily I managed to transfer my Acronis key to my new installation.

Okay seems that the RGB wasn't making proper contact with the freaking 5 pin header, so I'm now just using the CPU RGB header as it's not being used. Three fans daisy chained off there comes in under 2a so it should be fine.
