Question is... Thinking of building a smallish desktop for when my oldish-i7 laptop is just not quite capable of keeping up.

Do I got with the 5600x + basic GPU.. Or go with an AMD APU - and if so, wait for new versions or whats currently available?

Depends on your exact needs in terms of GPU performance..

Any recommendations for a laptop or small desktop for a friend? For basic use, web browsing, Netflix etc, nothing hectic. But he wants it to be fast. Was thinking of a Ryzen laptop, I think the new ones are quite decent? Else a small desktop box can also work, with an APU to start with? He does not have a set budget, so I am looking between R10k and R20k. For a laptop, he wants a 15" screen. For desktop, he already has a monitor that he can use. First option would be a laptop.

Any concerns with the above?

Replacing my i5 3570k, will keep my 970gtx until **** calms down on the GPU front.

I am going to reuse my case, psu.
Save money on the CPU by buying it from one of the resellers on Carbonite, example:

Why not go for a PCIe 4.0 M.2 instead? Not sure about SA pricing but they're cheaper (and faster) than 3.0x4 drives over here (Samsung 970 vs 980 anyway). The B550 chipset supports it, and with CHIA mining kicking off soon, now is probably going to be the best time to buy storage (I was watching a 2.5" SSD this week and the next day when I wanted to buy it the price had gone up by £100).

Far as I can tell, 4.0 M.2s are not significantly faster then the equivalent 3.0 drives for general use. Sure the synthetic tests are amazingly different but real world, I will not notice a difference.

In terms of price this one was much cheaper than the samsungs.

Just a heads up, depending what BIOS version the MB shipped with the 5600X might not boot (actually won't even POST) until you update the BIOS and for that you will need access to a previous gen CPU. (no Q-flash option on that MB).

Thank you, yes, I did ask Wootware if they would mind updating the BIOS for me before shipping.

Just confirm with them if they did do it. Another user had the same conversation and it arrived un-flashed.

Been over a year since I did the 1600AF + 16GB build, it's even had a change with the RX580 swapped out for a GTX 1660ti and yet it now sits as my son has a Xbox One S in his room now and he plays that more often.

What's on the Xbox that doesn't have a PC version?
