Here's something weird...my pc is stable with memory @ 3733mhz, infinity fabric (fclk) 1867 and mclk 1867 (the 1-1-1 AMD says to aim for). Last night I decided to take 3800mhz for a spin - it just refused to post. Even with the memory set all the way down to 2133, the CPU (or BIOS maybe) would not work with fclk set to 1900. So I'm thinking, meh - bad luck with the silicon lottery, this CPU doesn't work at 1900mhz fclk.

Then I tried fclk @ 1933 and lo and behold, it's alive. Only problem is, the memory doesn't want to boot at 3866 - even with all timings set to auto and geardown mode enabled. So that's a new thing to figure out on the weekend - might need some more voltage or command rate 2t maybe.

Pretty weird that a lower infinity fabric frequency doesn't work but the next step up does.

Trash auto-timings with memory at 3600Mhz and fclk @ 1933 -

Fokkit, 3866/1933 is slower than 3733/1866 and it's not even margin of error close.
Tortured the poor RAM for niks...the latency penalty from the desync above 1900 fclk is just too damn high (67ns vs 57ns).

3800/1900 would be ideal but it still doesn't post at 1900 fclk.
Try setting your vsoc voltage to 1.0 or 1.1V. I heard that higher is not better so 1.0v is best
Tried 0.95 up to 1.2 in 0.05 increments...no luck. I'm leaning toward some kind of bios issue but I'm on the latest and don't feel like flashing older versions to see if they're better. 3733/1866 will have to do.

Seems like an issue other people have had with 5000 series cpu's across different boards and bios revisions -

Guess I'll move on to playing with curve optimiser (the undervolting thingy).
Yeah 5000 can be weird. I've had my own set of issues, and even replaced the CPU - to then get the same issues. AMD simply refuse to acknowledge ANY of the issues for some reason.

What happens when you leave fclk on auto (it should default to half the RAM speed anyway)?

Not sure what board you're using but I just saw there's a new F14c BIOS on Gigabyte's website. "Inproved memory compatibility".

That works but is way slower than 1800 1:1:1. It would need a lot of memory frequency to compensate for the slower infinity fabric (probably 4400mhz or more). Ye olde Hynix CJR I'm working with won't go that high...it doesn't scale with voltage like b-die. It's at a mild 1.38V now and that voltage is fine for 3866 (up from 3200 16-18-18-38).

I should say this is for the fun of it really...the machine is perfectly fine at 3600mhz but I do like poking at it to see where the limits are. For daily use, the bios profile I use is ~1000 points lower than the highest Cinebench R23 score I've gotten. Happy with how the hardware performs for normal use.

I have finally decided that this is what i'm going with, order will be placed on Friday with Wootware.

Any suggestions are welcome.

What case are you putting these components in?

General wisdom seems to be not to vertical mount your GPU if it's air-cooled, as the airflow to it is generally poor then, being so close to the side panel.

You don't need that cooler honestly, you could even save a bit and look at the Gammax on Takealot the 400 or GT. Even a, Hyper 212 would be a bit cheaper, that Phantek is expensive.

I’m putting them in a Phanteks P500A DRGB version.

The GPU vertical mount I won’t be using it. Probably in future. I’m buying it now because these things gets out of stock and takes time to be in stock again. I will put it once I have the AIO cooler. Maybe next year.

Thanks for the info. I think I will wait a bit on the cooler and try the Wraith cooler that comes with the CPU. I will not be gaming for the next few months since I don’t have the GPU at the moment. I will first monitor the temps on regular use with the wraith cooler and make decisions from there.

Do you have any sort of GPU? As the 5600X doesn't have one built in

Yes I do have some stoneage GPU that a friend have to me to use while saving up for a better GPU.

XFX HD 6670
Oh ouch, that will be a heavy bottleneck :-) the GPU on the 5600G would've been better. But the 5600x performance once you have a decent GPU would be faaaar better then the 5600G

I will not be gaming on it. Just a normal PC use.

That cpu cooler and memory will not work. Memory is to tall for the cooler.

Thank you for the information. Will the Wraith work?

What other cooler would you recommend that can work with that memory?

Hmmm...the 2 x DIMM slots on the 550 seems like it's limiting what I can do with RAM upgrades in the future.

Any other suggested AMD mobo's in the 1500 - 3500 price range? AM4 + microATX, pref with PCIe 4.0.
Gigabyte auros b550 pro v2.
