At stock clocks the Radeon 7850 and GTX 570 are very close, but the 7850 has far more overclocking potential than the 570. Many people are hitting 1300Mhz on the core, that's performance similar if not slightly better than a 7950. Probably the "best equipped" 7850 to overclock would be the ASUS HD7850-DC2 with its DirectCU II cooler which keeps the GPU cooler and operates quieter than most other coolers.

Just out of curiosity why pick the MSI Z77M-G80 over the ASUS motherboards, considering that ASUS are arguably the leading motherboard manufacturer currently?

Also if you want to save a bit on RAM you could get 2x Axtrom 8GB DDR3-1333Mhz for a total of R819 incl. VAT

I am buying from Pinnacle and they only have MSI, should I rather look for Asus?

LOL, I am switching from 7850 to 570 and now back to 7850, I hate choices grrrrrr

Thanks for the input

For your GPU it wouldn't be such a big deal, but for your motherboard I would highly recommend ASUS or Gigabyte/ASRock over MSI mainly due to the fact that their Z77 motherboards performed nowhere near as good as other major brands when overclocking, but its not that their a bad brand, for the X79 chipset (Socket R/LGA 2011) ASUS and MSI are really the only brands to consider and now possibly ASRock's Extreme11, its just that MSI haven't produced their "best" motherboards for the Z77 chipset.

useless laptop. about to kick the bucket.

R10 000 (excluding a monitor and PSU. Also would preferably have a 120GB SSD as I have External Hard drives for everything else and will buy an internal when I have the money )

Gaming [ WOW MOP, D3, Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3. Skyrim. All games really ]/General Usage.

1920X1080. http://www.lg.com/za/it-product/monitor/LG-D2342P.jsp

PSU 800W. http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2493#kf

I want to have it built by the end of next week.

Probably

Thanks for the help.

Hey pleb12

Sorry for the late reply, I'll recommend you the same build that I quoted for Vercogen as you have almost identical requirements for your PC's

CPU : i5 3570K @R2210
Motherboard : ASUS Maximus V Gene @R2545
GPU : Sapphire Radeon HD7850 @R2660
SSD : OCZ Vertex 4 - 120GB @R1400
RAM : Kingston Hyper X 8GB - 1600MHz @R455
CPU Cooler : Corsair H60@R710
Case : Aerocool X Warrior @R480

Total = R10 460

*For the GPU I've put in a Radeon HD7850 for now, will run every game currently at 1080P, but I highly recommend that you wait for the GTX 660Ti to release (possibly) on August 25 as rumours suggest. It should offer improved performance for the same price as the 7850.

*I've dropped an OCZ Vertex 4 in there as your SSD and a Corsair H60 to allow you overclock your i5 and keep the temperatures at a safe level.

Thanks for the advice! Nice build. Have a Sapphire 5770 Vapor-X from a while back will wait for the GT660ti and use the 5770 in the mean while. What is the performance difference between the H60 and a Coolermaster Hyper 212 evo? I see everyone recommending the evo because its great performance for the price as it is half the price of the H60. If I can save R300 that will leave me with R3000 when the GT 660ti comes out.

Hi guys. I'll be going to PTA tomorrow to train some people at a workshop. Seeing as I'm there I was wondering if anyone know of some legit PC shops that would have stock on a decent motherboard, i3-2120 CPU and some DDR3 RAM? Also if some of the gurus can make some suggestions to brands it'll be most welcome, budget in the region of ~R2500-R2800.

Edit: Sorry, posted this in the wrong thread. :/

Esquire (Midrand) might have been a good bet, they give free accounts to MYBB members, but you would need to resister first...

Asus for motherboards...

Hi I got a gtx 570 twin frozr iii and I'm getting bad graphics lag in BF3. I have a i3 540 and 4gb(order 8gb , should get it next week). So what cpu upgrade could I get for R2000-R2500?

Toffelman:
The brand new Socket 1156 CPU's are incredibly difficult to find nowadays.

Perhaps you should try to look for 2nd-hand i7 860/870 (goes for R2700 new) or i5 750/760 (goes for R2000 new) CPU's on like carbonite.co.za

Lastly, did you run like Task Manager whilst playing BF3? Was all 4 CPU threads maxed out of your i3 540?

This is a awesome thread. Still not 100% sure what I should get. I only need to buy something that will play 1080p *.mkv files on a FULL HD TV.

Any help will be really appreciated.

Hey Guys,

My brother has asked me to build him a PC seeing as I built one for myself a year ago. But I feel like I am way in over my head as there are just so many options, and I just don't have the time as I did before to go over everything. I am hoping to pick your PC enthusiasts brains, as I would really like to get the best value for money out of the budget. So here are the details, and what I got so far.

My Current Specs:

Graphics Card: GTX 670 - R4616
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570l - R2299
CPUC: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler - R362
RAM: Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB - R653
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V - R1692
SSD: OCZ VTX4 128G - R1299
Harddrive: Seagate ST2000DM001 2TB - R1111
Case: Corsair 400R - R857.74
PSU: XFX ProSeries P1-750B-NLG9 - R1135
Screen: Philips 234EL2 - R1899

Total: R 15 923.74
Link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ai-BGz_IX57VdFpFckpKbzlBMW9YV29hS1RNYzlfaGc

Budget: R15000 - R16000 (inc keyboard and mouse)
I know I am slightly over budget, but he is willing to fork out the extra if need be.

Main Use: Gaming, Work, Media, general stuff

Are you going to re-use any parts?: No

When do you need your build by? : N/A

Are you going to overclock? : Possibly in the future

The parts that I am very unsure about is the:
Ram - Edited build to include Pansyfaust's recommendation.
Motherboard - Is it fine?
PSU - I see that the XFX got really good reviews, but is 750W enough?
Screen - There are millions of screens out there (and not many reviews), I am all ears for people suggesting better ones.

Any recommendations will be much appreciated, Thanks!

You can probably get a smaller psu and save some moola if your bro does not want to sli in the near future. Oh and a 650W will be fine for a 670, more than enough. A 650 unit is fine for a 680! And DO NOT get that ram you've linked. the voltage is 1.65V, too high for an Ivy bridge system which takes RAM between 1.3-1.5V. This will do fine for your build and also be cheaper. But if you do look for faster ram for an ivy bridge system, always remember MAX voltage on the ram is 1.5V.

Thanks, will ask him about whether or not he wants to have the possibility to SLI in the future, and I have made the changes to the RAM.

I would rather go with an i7 CPU - the LGA2011 Quads are not that much more - i7 3820 is R2499 excl. on my pricelist and from personal experience the difference between the i5's & i7's is like night and day. A 730W Raidmax will be fine for that setup as well - they are reliable, and affordable (PLUS they have nice shiney blue lights :p) - to make up for the extra on the i7 upgrade.

The bonus is that when the Hexacores become old news you can probably pick one up cheap in the second hand market as an upgrade in the future.

Just about any cheap ass GPU will do that these days. If you want it for a HTPC then try the ATI HD5450, with heatsink only so you get no noise.

Yeah I understand that, that CPU is definitely a better choice in terms of performance and scalability for future, but the thing is, I am already over budget and the i5 3570k already meets my brothers needs. Also in terms of gaming, both CPU's perform about the same. I will however look into the 730W Raidmax :P Sounds promising.

Hey Nicko

Your build is almost perfect as it is, just a few recommendations from my side, if you want to save some extra cash then you could drop the PSU to a XFX ProSeries 650W or Corsair TX650 or Antech HCG 620w, it won't really make much of a difference as the actual PSU for all three are made by Seasonic, however if you are going to add in another GTX 670 in the future then you would want top opt for the 750W variant.

For your screen you could choose from either this IPS screen or if you want to go for 3D gaming then choose this screen.

For your motherboard are you getting the P8Z77-V or the P8Z77-V LX @R1736, as I can't find any retailers that keep stock of P8Z77-V's at around R1700. This would be a major difference as the P8Z77-V LX does not support SLI whereas the P8Z77-V does support SLI, so if you're going to want to add in another GTX 670 down the line then you're going to want to get the P8Z77-V.

Hope this helps, if you have any questions just ask :)

Cheers

For better workstation performance the i7 would be the bettter choice but for gaming there are very few if any games that can max out an i5.

I understand that you are saying an LGA2011 setup would be better for lengevity as that socket is going to be used for years to come on high-end server and enthusiast platforms, but by the time currrent Sandy Bridge-E hexacores become cheap (which is probably towards the latter part of next year after Ivy Bridge-E is released) Haswell CPU's would have been released at around the same price as Ivy Bridge i5's and i7's are now and judging by the leap from Nahalem to Sandy Bridge (in which SB quad-cores were beating Nahalem hexa-cores in various cases) Haswell i7's will most likely offer the same if not better performance than Sandy Bridge-E for around half the price.

Also stay away from Raidmax's cheap PSU's, they have had some terrible ratings from users on their products. Google it and you'll see what I mean ;)
