Your build is almost perfect as it is, just a few recommendations from my side, if you want to save some extra cash then you could drop the PSU to a XFX ProSeries 650W or Corsair TX650 or Antech HCG 620w, it won't really make much of a difference as the actual PSU for all three are made by Seasonic, however if you are going to add in another GTX 670 in the future then you would want top opt for the 750W variant.

For your screen you could choose from either this IPS screen or if you want to go for 3D gaming then choose this screen.

For your motherboard are you getting the P8Z77-V or the P8Z77-V LX @R1736, as I can't find any retailers that keep stock of P8Z77-V's at around R1700. This would be a major difference as the P8Z77-V LX does not support SLI whereas the P8Z77-V does support SLI, so if you're going to want to add in another GTX 670 down the line then you're going to want to get the P8Z77-V.

Thanks for the advice :D! Yeah I think he would want to have that SLI option in the future, so I will probably stick with the 750W. Will look into those screens, definitely look like a better alternative to what I currently have! In terms of the Motherboard, I was looking at the P8Z77-V LX @R1736, but yeah I noticed that as well (the whole SLI thing) would you recommend the P8277-V over GIGABYTE Z77X-UD3H, because I see that the board got some really nice reviews and is a bit cheaper.
 
I'm buying a new PC (my old one got stolen and the insurance has paid out) and I'm looking for some advice on the build I have so far.


Current Build so far:
Total: R16219.78

Budget: R15000 - R16500

Main Use: Gaming, General Use

Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080

Are you going to re-use any parts? No

When do you need your build by? Soonish preferably

Are you going to overclock? No


Other than general advice I want to know:
  • Whether my PSU is too powerful considering I am not going to get SLI and, if so, what is a good alternative?
  • Are these components compatible with Linux?
  • Is the cooling of the case/cpu sufficient?


Due to the nature of the insurance payout I would prefer stores (in Cape Town) that allow me to pay in person with a credit card type card.

Strange, Corsair RAM have always had good quality, but if you do want to opt for another set of DDR3 RAM then I'd recommend these G.Skill RipjawsX DDR3-1600Mhz sticks @R551, they offer great performance and are superb overclockers.

The choice of motherboards really comes down to personal preference, to put it simply, if you are going to use the PC for more everyday use, then the wiser option would be the P8Z77-V as it has a wider array of features compared to the Z77X-UD3H, if you are going to game more than general use than the Z77X-UD3H, take note though that both offer relatively the same overclocking performance, but if you are willing to compromise a few "everyday" features and save some cash, then by all means go for the Z77X-UD3H :)

Sorry should of been a little more clear in my first post.
Its not that I dont/will never purchase corsair ram again, just asking if there is another product from corsair that is good quality and performs well, anything other than the vengeance product line if you can call it that :p

Oh, okay I took it the wrong way :D, besides the Vengeance product line Corsair have their Valueselect and XMS3 lines, although being cheaper and having good quality, both don't offer as good performance as the Vengeance production line. Outside of Corsair other brands to look at would be G.Skill with their RipjawsX product line and Kingston with their HyperX product line.
 
Some every good PC builds out there. What would be cool too is if you could show benchmarks of your PC + games to show your PC performance with high details GFX. :D

Awesome thread.

Here are my requirements:

  1. Your Current Specs: I am looking for an i5 Processor, 1TB HDD (budget allowing).
  2. Budget: 6000 - 7000.
  3. Main Use: Everyday use - Gaming, HD Streaming and HD Movies/Series.
  4. Monitor Resolution: For a 32 Inch LED TV 720p or 1020p
  5. Are you going to re-use any parts?: No
  6. When do you need your build by? : December
  7. Are you going to overclock? : No

I also need a Wireless Keyboard.
I bought all the software (windows 7 etc).
It should be able to run the following games comfortably: Borderlands, Starcraft, Supreme Commander 2, Crysis 2 and 3 (when it comes out), Diablo 3, Just Cause 2, Need for Speed.

Any suggestions/advice would be helpful. I had a look at RebelTech, heard they also assemble the PC for you, which is great. :D

Does anyone know if they beat the prices from other stores or provide good discounts? (similiar to what Game does?)

Need a little help building my new "Gaming Rig" as I desperately need something more powerful than my current setup. This is a first for me so bear with me if I make any rookie mistakes.

When do you need your build by?: By mid september. I can wait.
Are you going to overclock?: Unlikely, but I would like to have that option should I need to.

What I had in mind was the I5-3570K, 8GB DDR3 1600, ASUS ENGTX560ti 2GB, MSI Z77A-G43. I'm not sure about the PSU or the Chassis. How does the Zalman Z9 fare against the Antech and CM towers? Also, I'm looking to get a solid state harddrive later this year, so keep that in mind when recommending parts. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Linux compatible yes.

I would change the psu, for a diffrent brand\model though 750w is more than enough for you, you could go for a 650w.

Look @ the cosair HX750.

as for the case http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=6702 take a look at the silencio 550.

As for the rest of the build it seems decent If you could add a SSD to that build you will be flying.

You looking for a specific one? If you don't mind buying second hand there is quite a few people selling theirs off for decent prices.
 
So, my motherboard decided that it felt like dying recently, and now I'm stuck in quite a pickle. Replacing the mobo means replacing the CPU, RAM and harddrives with it, seeing as my CPU was still dual-core and it's time to go to quad, my RAM was DDR2 and the two internal HDDs were still IDE. As you can see, I've pretty much got a choice between doing a decent upgrade, or getting an ancient mobo that still fits everything, but being forced into another total upgrade in a year or two.

So far, I've got this build from Wesley over at the NAG forums, but I'd like some more opinions and/or options if anyone wouldn't mind? Always a good idea to have a variety, even though this seems a really good build.

So, I'll be sticking with my 550w CPU, HD6870 and DVD Rom. The rest needs to be replaced. The total of this build comes down to R3629, which is a bit higher than I was bargaining for. Might take a while to scratch all the cash together. Would have preferred a build that's under R3000, but I don't want to compromise performance too much.

Anyone got any other suggestions, perhaps? I'm not quite so tech-savvy, so I can't really work out builds for myself. :p

So, can anyone beat that?

I have a HDD and a screen. But quite low end ones. Busy using a LG Flatron 17" :P Budget is 10k and I can't over spend. Do i get my self the 670? or stick with the 660ti? I could get a cheap screen and a budget 500 gig hdd as well thats sata3?

Please comment and criticise the rig itself, maybe things are cheaper elsewhere but rebeltech is literally down the road from my house :) Help please

So with Esquire's special running at the moment, I figure it's as good a time as any to build up a new system. This will be used for some gaming, Photoshop/Lightroom and general surfing etc.

I've put the following together but looking for advise. As the Esquire special is only valid until tomorrow, I'd appreciate some quick responses...
