Yeah. Asked if they'd take 1.7k cash... Will see

Ok, so the card uses the 8pin? What would I use the other for?

Oh wowzers! So I take it it's a decent card then...

Going to grab it and that psu for now. Is it worth selling my current box ad building a new machine? What do you think I could get for it? 5k?

Depends what you want to do, do you want to do a full new build or scavenge off your old stuff?
You won't get anywhere near 5k for that box. Maybe on Gumtree, but I doubt it, you'd be looking at ~2k if you include the 1TB drive.
Which I wouldn't.

You've got a decent enough base system to get going from.
What I would do is:
GPU
PSU
CASE (I doubt that card is going to fit in your current case)

Then
CPU Cooler (decent one so you can use it on future builds)
You can then OC your chip a bit to get extra performance.
At it's current clock it'll be holding your system back a bit.

Then
MOBO + CPU + RAM

In a PC build there are 3-4 things that can last you for a number of builds that's why I also try to get guys to get
1) Decent PSU
2) Decent case for cooling, expansion size and well style :)
3) CPU Cooler. These are compatible with most if not all sockets and normally have an additional clip that can be purchased should a new socket come out that it doesn't fit.
4) Hard drives

So in your case you have a nice 1TB and decent enough chip which with a small OC would give you time to save for a new chip MOBO and RAM.

Scrumpy, as mentioned in my own new build thread, I'm going to be putting my current system on sale as soon as the new one is up and running (1-2 weeks hopefully). Maybe you'd be interested. It's a great system and still handles new games on high settings.

Not sure what a good price would be (Peanut?) but was thinking around 5k. I'm not looking to squeeze the absolute best price out of the system so if you're interested and in Cape Town maybe we can sort something out.

Intel core 2 quad q9550 2.8ghz
Asus P5Q
4 GB 800mhz DDR2 ram
MSI 6870 Hawk 1GB
500gb Seagate
750gb Seagate
Samsung DVDRW drive
Coolermaster Cosmos case
Gigabyte Odin 585W PSU

Alright, so my parts arrived from Prophecy today:
  • Cooler Master Cosmos 2
  • Corsair 32GB Dominator DDR3-1600 Kit
  • Corsair AX750W Power Supply
  • Asus Xonar HDAV 1.3 Deluxe
  • Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe Motherboard
  • Corsair H100 Hydro CPU cooler

Just waiting till the end of the month to buy Intel Core i& 3770k, 2xOCZ Vertex 4 (256 and 128) for Windows 7 and 8 respectively, a 2TB Seagate and a Blu-ray writer. I'm reusing my BenQ 24" monitor, my GTX480 as well as my kb and mouse.

Overkill yes, but then again I only upgrade every 3-5 years, and my kit needs to last. I do a lot of work in Virtual Machines, as well as gaming, so I need the horsepower. My old rig just doesn't cut it any more, but it's lasted me well over the last 4 years.

Hey found it :)

I think 5k is definitely quite do able.
you looking at around:
R1.5 for CPU + MOBO + RAM
R1.3 for GPU
R1k for HDD's
Case > R1k I'm sure you'd get 1.5k easily.
PSU + DVD < R500

Great, I'm happy with 5k. Thanks.

Thought I'd ask this here, don't want to make a new thread, I'm looking to get a new PC within the next month or 2, budget ~10k, just want to run my games SMOOTH on medium to high settings (Games I'm playing atm, CS;GO, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2) but nowadays I'm not up to speed anymore when it comes to prices and what not. Is the price of something like this reasonable http://www.evetech.co.za/Computer-s...gtx-660-custom-built-gaming-computer-125.aspx and will it be sufficient for my requirements?

Eish, prices have gone up much in the last 2 weeks. Guess im going to have to wait for 2013 to finish my rig.

Hey guys - need some advice.

My church is looking for a new PC for data projecting. What would you recommend?

I will know later what is available from the old PC but that is almost 10 years old now, so rather look at an entire system excepting hard drives and dvd-rom.

Thanks!

Duff-man, your input would be appreciated here.

I've just installed an ADSL line at home and my son is now starting to play online games with an Acer One netbook which obviously is not ideal but suffices at the moment.

Would your "Budget Build" be the way to go, not too expensive but able to last him a couple of years or so?

Hi The Thug

The Budget Build outlined in the PC Builder's Guide would be perfect for your son. I would just swap the 6850 for one of these

You could also upgrade the monitor to one with a resolution of 1080P as the GTX 650Ti linked above should easily handle current games at 1080P at medium settings with lowered AA.
