The metaphor of it, is really hard to not keep on thinking about.

Yeah, was really good. Could have ended better though.

I googled it and lots of people complain they don't like the ending.

I don't have an issue with the ending. Seeing the whole movie is a metaphor after all.

Even the director in interviews doesn't tell the journalist what everything means. It's up to you to decide.

Everything in it is a metaphor. Even, the ending.

It's obvious. :)

I watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

As for the ending, its quite grim. One interpretation on Reddit;
Girl wasn't real. The men descended for nothing. All systems (communist/capitalist) are broken. There is no hope for the people no matter what they decide to do. Not enough food(resources?) to reach all the floors and feed everyone and even if you try stretch it, human nature won't allow it.

Yeah I enjoyed it as well. It is really a thinking man's movie. If you like dual meanings.
The woman and the child could mean many things.
No one would ever go down. You might want to climb up to better your situation. The woman might also not be real. She goes down with the purpose of saving a child, maybe she is our conscious that instead of thinking of ourselves we should help others. The child could mean help the weak. He shows compassion for her and is willing to go down to help everyone. To solve the puzzle. He goes down and find the girl at the final level. Gives her the prized cake that nearly killed him. He wants to be her bearer and go back up with her and save himself in the process. But the dead old man says to him: You are not her bearer.
I think that means you are at the end of your life. You die. You can't save yourself. You help the young and next generation.

Compare it with raising a child and making sure your children have all the tools to succeed. You send them up knowing you can't go with them. That is so sad but true. Then you think of all the kids whose parents don't help them to send them to the top. So many fall along the way or get used by others. That is depressing.

The old man who is willing to eat him but blames those above him for not leaving enough food. Ironic since the reason the old man is in the pit is because of resentment in being tricked in ordering the 2nd best product. He couldn't sleep without having the best.
Compare that with what happens in Africa. Colonialism is blamed. Apartheid is blamed. Destroy the economy and eat as much as you can because it is not your fault. It's those who came before you. Now that is scary. The old man is a metaphor those who justifies atrocities.

The protagonist could be someone who enters university. His goal is knowledge. He doesn't realize that you are just entering the pit. Education just puts you on a random level.

stupidity of our modern world existence,
Everyone has their own perspective based on the level they are on. You are on one of the top levels. People like you don't last long. Sooner or later you jump.

The panna cotta could also mean so many things:
The panna cotta could be money. We slave our whole life for money just to have enough to have a child, give them an education and food and bring them up healthy. Let the circle of continue.

The movie might also have a religious meaning seeing there is 333 levels and 2 people per level.

The panna cotta could represent our own idea of the afterlife or God or what we believe our meaning of life is. It's the wise man after all who tells them that is the meaning. Just like the church tells use what the meaning of life is.
A false belief we have that is realized at our death.By realizing the goal is not to save our selvesbut help people.

Or it could be a religious meaning that you get afterlife only if you don't see yourself above other people. By sacrificing yourself you get redemption. (giving the girl the panna cotta)
