Since the first personal computer, most of us have been a little in the dark as to how they work. Most of us can operate a computer (ie. switch it on) and send an email or two, but when it comes to the really technical stuff, we choose to run as far as possible.
As a technician who has been in the business since Windows 3.1, the single largest problem I have encountered, is the new computer.
You see, it's all fine and well getting a new computer with a new operating system, and all those new funky gizmo's, but the reality is, that more often than not it's a hassle.
It's a hassle moving all your data from one computer to the next. You have email, address books, documents, favorites, cookies, stored passwords, bookmarks, movies, music, and a million other things on your computer. You may have had your computer for a year or 5, and you have got it setup just the way you like it.
Now you get a new computer and you need to start all over again. You need to enter passwords, move documents. You loose settings, and if you are really unlucky you end up loosing some critical data stored in some directory somewhere, that you forgot about.
I have no doubt that this has happened to you at some point in your experience as a Personal Computer user.
Enter Windows Easy Transfer Manager. Windows Vista has the Easy Transfer Manager built into it that simplifies the entire process, so you can actually do it yourself, and not have to rely on the 7 year old geek living next door.
You can transfer data from a Windows XP machine to a Windows Vista machine, or a Windows Vista to Windows Vista machine. You simply launch Windows Easy Transfer Manager, on your old computer, select the data you want to move. Then launch in on your new computer, and it does the rest for you.
You have a number of ways to connect the two computers to each other. Easy Transfer Cable, LAN, Removable Hard Drive, or a CD orDVD drive.
The process is seamless, and works really well.
I've just used the process to setup a new HP Compaq nx7300. It took about 5 minutes to get the old and new laptops to start the transfer from Vista to Vista. Everything went down really well, until at 3am my nx7300 decided that it wants to install some updates and reboot.
I suggest turning off auto updates when doing the transfer. I had about 50GB of data to move to the nx7300 and it takes a while on a 54Mb/s WiFi network.
Once however, I got the process completed, I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. All my settings are there, my favorites, my passwords, etc etc.
In fact , it's so easy I'm sure my Mother could do it.
The HP Compaq nx7300 is a really nice machine. It comes standard with Windows Vista Business, and already has all the drivers and extras loaded. Anyone who has upgraded to Vista recently will know what a mission it is to get a machine working properly, and hunting for Vista drivers.
It comes with a Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66 processor, which runs very nicely. The processor scores 4.7 on the Vista Score.
The nx7300 has an Intel 945GM Express chipset, so it's not bleeding edge technology. but it's a reliable performance base.
I was very impressed to see that the machine came with 1GB of Ram straight out of the box. Vista needs about 1GB to run properly, and this machines works nicely straight out of the box. The RAM scores 4.5 on the Vista Experience Index.
Not earth shattering, but nice, is the 80GB SATA drive. It's always nice to have a little extra space to go round, and the SATA drive is quieter and faster than a normal drive. Windows Experience Index score of 4.3.
The specs of the nx7300 doesn't say so but it comes with a Light Scribe DVD Writer, and already has some neat HP software installed for it.
Having a laptop with enough ports on it is rare to find. The nx7300 comes with 3 USB ports, and a FireWire port. The extra USB makes a difference.
The graphics are nothing to write home about, 15.4" screen is decent, onboard graphics means you won't be taking it to a LAN any time soon, but it still scores a 3.1 on the Experience Index. It's fine for daily productivity, and you can play solitare, but you won't be running Direct X 10 stuff just yet.
As you would expect with this laptop, it comes with WiFi, 802.11a/b/g and bluetooth. Also has a 100Mbits LAN connection and a Modem. I'm astounded with how many Laptops today don't have bluetooth. They have bluetooth software, and a switch, but no actual bluetooth device. The nx7300 is a well connected machine.
Overall the HP Compaq nx7300 is a really nice machine. If you need a decent laptop with Vista to work for you for a good couple of years I would highly recommend this machine.
