The Proton Cars Thread

Just when things were looking positive for Proton.

When did daihatsu leave sa? Arent they owned by toyota? So they should be around for a few years?

Same thing with proton? Who own them?

Daihatsu left not too long ago man.

It's an HQ decision. They pulled out of all big western markets a few yrs back but still sold in SA & recently they left. They are focusing on the Eastern Markets mostly.

Dumb move if you ask me.

Toyota owns a % of them; not the company entirely.

Read the link I provided wrt to Proton; the issue here was the unfavorable exchange rates wrt to importing the cars from Malaysia.

Diahatsu are toyota from what i saw the avanza is called the xenia the grand max is also a toyota,

So if you own one now its suddenly worthless now? Loved the charade, especially the older ones.

Proton as well make that bakkie, so what does one do now for service and parts?

Both holding corps in SA are still honoring warranties & service; as well as parts.

But yes resale value of ones Daihatsu should take a tip but resale value of the Protons now will prob be as bad as the Datsun Go! in a crash

we bought/sold a Satria Neo a year or so ago. Nippy little cars but utter rubbish in everything else. Horrible finishes, even worse paintwork and workmanship. Drive was ok, nothing to shout about. They probably do well in Malaysia where i assume they get some sort of government kickback and assistance.

I was in Malaysia back in 2004 & Proton cars are *everywhere* & almost exclusively used as taxis.

Their gov pumps a lot of money in their car brand.

Daihatsu though hasn't had a new car in what five years?

So how on earth do they expect to compete anyway ?

I was so pissed when my sister bought a brand new Terios last year after I told her to hold out because a new one must be on the way if she must have one or buy something else that is newer and fresher.

Now this, which is even worse.

Yeah; even checking their international site we see the same old 3/4 models.

Not sure why they pulled out of Western market to "focus on Eastern Markets".

Unfortunately the resale value of new Terios will take a bigger than expected knock.

One of my mates bought a Proton Satra Neo a couple of years ago - by far the worst car that I've ever driven whilst the dealer's attempt at resale / trade (even on another Proton) was extremely painful to say the very least. Your vehicle need to make your heart beat faster but at the end of the day you at last need to be able to get something when trading in on a 3 year old vehicle with 60 000km - as such a Fortuner or Golf GTI seems to be the best besides the obvious theft and or hijack risks.

.

But the people say it is a cr@p car. They buy up as soon as they can afford it.

No your vehicle needs to take you from A to B.

G/F should make your heart beat faster.
For me, a car needs to be exciting to drive. I want a car that's amazing to drive and not just something that takes me from point to point... But then again, I'm not the average consumer and cars are a passion :)

And this is exactly why the markup is ridiculous on cars.

They know it is an emotional purchase.

Bought a Gen 2 2006 Model in 2007, at the moment more than 220K on the clock, still using it, two major problems in the past, airbag exploded without any reason, and radiator gave in, but car is still going without problems, regular service seems to do the job. I don't think I will get anything if I sell it now, will probably serve as a "back up" car if I make up my mind to buy a sond car.

Interesting...only Q I have is how the eff did the airbag just explode like that. Any injuries or car damage after that?
