Bring back Putco, beg commuters

Pretoria - Commuters in Mamelodi say government must bring back Putco so that life can return to normal.

"Government should just give Putco what it wants and Putco must come back so that we can continue as we have been before," said Khoni Mahlangu.

"It's this city buses that taxi owners don't want. We can't afford to use taxis, they are very expensive."

Commuters have been left stranded for a third day in a row as taxi owners continue their relentless fight against the implementation of Autopax bus service in the township.

They claim government promised them the route once the contract with Putco ended. They say they must be subsidised and they will transport commuters.

As anger boils and commuters are left stranded, taxi operators said in the long run their actions will benefit the community.

"We are going to speak to the community to show them that what we are fighting for is not for us but for them. The subsidy that is going to come is theirs," a taxi operator said. "Today they might say they are not going to work because we are being selfish but once all the dust has settled, they will reap the rewards."

The taxi owner said they are not fighting with their passengers, they just don't want a company they have no knowledge about operating in their area. He added they would try to meet the commuters half way regarding fares.

"Right now they are complaining about having to pay twice so we will look at the possibility of charging them a reduced fare and run at a loss unlike for someone to come in here. We would rather run at a loss and transport our people than allow some company to take food out of our mouth," he added.

The owner promised that things will be better on Monday.

Putco bus shot at during taxi protest

Pretoria - A Putco bus was shot at on Friday as violence escalated in Mamelodi, where minibus taxi owners continued to oppose the introduction of the Autopax bus service in the area.

The bus, carrying passengers, was allegedly shot at by four men in a car about 5km from the intersection of Solomon Mahlangu Drive and Pretoria Road.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that the driver of the bus had been killed and a commuter injured.

The sister of the injured passenger said she received a phone call earlier on Friday morning while she was at home.

"When I got here I found my sister lying on the ground," Nomsa Mahlangu told a News24 correspondent.

"They said they had shot her and the bullet was in the stomach. When I arrived here her colleagues and friends they told me that a car with four occupants driving in the opposite direction started shooting at the bus and that is how she got shot.”

The woman was taken to the Pretoria East Hospital where she was receiving medical treatment.

"I heard the bus driver was also shot and he has passed away," Mahlangu said.

Police, paramedics on scene

At this stage, it has not been officially confirmed that the driver has died but paramedics, the SA Police Service and Tshwane Metro Police were on scene.

Putco spokesperson Tshene Wedi told News24 that a driver and several passengers were taken to hospital after a bus was fired upon on Friday morning but he did not have more details on the incident.

Tshwane Metro Police spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said he would give official comment at a later stage as they were still trying to ascertain what happened.

Protests by the taxi owners in the area have been going on for three days.

They have barricaded roads and pelted buses with stones.

On Friday, another three buses were damaged, bringing the total number for the week to seven.

Police need to roll in and arrest every single taxi driver/owner involved in this.

Lack of leadership. That you keep voting for. Corruption is only a western paradigm, so deal with it.

Why are the lawless idiots attacking Putco and not Autopax who are the bus service to replace Putco?

Taxi drivers run SA... What they say, goes. If not, they start killing hostages until gov gives in...

Three of our cleaning staff didn't pitch up for work this morning... apparently it is due to intimidation by taxi drivers...

We need another Marikana but with taxi drivers instead of miners. You cannot allow violence to win , if they let them win they will never stop.
