An all-new Duster has been announced.

Dacia has renewed Duster, the brand's iconic SUV which boasts modern, all-new robust styling. Not only is All-New Dacia Duster as versatile as ever but it is also even more attractive and, with more than one million unit sales to its credit to date, a new chapter in the model's history is about to begin. Dacia will unveil All-new Duster at the 2017 Frankfurt Show.

All-new Dacia Duster's adventurer pedigree and ability to stray off the beaten track are expressed by the latest version's updated design. In keeping with the model's DNA, All-new Duster combines robust, muscular styling with a truly assertive personality that is emphasised by a brand-new body colour, Atacama Orange.

Front

All-new Dacia Duster's distinctive grille extends to the head lights positioned at the car's extreme corners and makes the model appear wider.
A new lighting signature including LED daytime running lights divided into three sections.
The crease lines of the horizontal bonnet contribute to the vehicle's assertive stance.
The larger, mass-coloured, satin-chrome-finish skid plate reinforces the car's adventurer credentials and is scratch-resistant to maintain its smart look.
Side

The higher belt line adds to the impression of strength and occupant protection.
The windscreen has been brought forward 100mm compared with the current Duster and is more steeply raked, which makes the cabin longer so it looks more spacious.
The new aluminium roof bars, a frequent SUV hallmark, extend the line of the windscreen for a more dynamic profile.
17-inch wheels and prominent wheel arches.
Black wing arch trims highlight the car's adventurer credentials.
Rear

Voluminous haunches.
Horizontal lines and lights positioned at the extreme corners to heighten the car's solid stance.
Dacia's rear lighting signature - four red stacked squares - has been adapted for Duster.
Wider, mass-coloured, satin-chrome-finish rear skid plate.
All-new Dacia Duster also features upgraded travelling comfort thanks to a completely redesigned, quality-feel interior and new equipment.

New Dacia Duster - official pics show revamped design

Sales success of SUV from Renault’s value-for-money brand prompted firm to take evolutionary approach to redesign

The ongoing success of the Dacia Duster has prompted the firm to take an evolutionary approach to the design of the updated SUV. So said Laurens van den Acker, senior vice president, corporate design, at Groupe Renault.

The latest Duster sits on the same platform as the
old model and has identical overall dimensions, although the windscreen has been moved forward slightly to improve interior space.

The car now sports a broader front grille and wider headlights, and the rear lights have been moved to the corners. The square-wheel-arch style of the previous Duster has been retained with new roof bars added.

Renault-owned Dacia has sold more than a million Dusters since 2010 and year-on-year sales are continuing to rise. Van den Acker said that influenced the firm’s thinking about the new model’s design.

“The big revolution is that we’re not doing a revolution,” he said. “The Duster’s not
at the end of its life. We
still can’t make enough to satisfy demand. So why change a good thing? But if you get close, you’ll see that everything has been touched.”

Dacia design boss David Durand said ensuring
the Duster retained an unpretentious feel, reflecting value for money, was vital.

“The original brief was
a white page, so we could explore everything — even if we did go back to familiar themes,” said Durand.

“When we are designing a Dacia, we always think about the customer. For example, if we put too many decorative chrome parts on, he will sit in it and say: ‘This has no usage. Why am I paying for that?’”

Dacia has yet to show the Duster’s new interior, but Durand said: “The car is a strategic evolution on the outside, but it’s more revolutionary inside.”

Q&A: LAURENS VAN DEN ACKER, RENAULT DESIGN BOSS

Why didn’t you increase the size of the Duster?

“The Duster has a bit of a magical size. We felt there was more worth to be created for our customers by fixing the design ‘mistakes’. If we decide we’ll need a bigger car, we’ll do it with something else.”

Did having Dacia help shape a design direction for Renault?

“Dacia helped us to push Renault in a more emotional direction. Renault has become more Latin, more emotional. Renault’s history is a little more humble than where we’ve pushed the brand to now, and I’m sure if we didn’t have Dacia, a part of the company would be saying : ‘Captur is great, but we used to have affordable cars. We need that as well.’”

Can you explain Dacia’s success?

“Dacia is a brand that established itself and maybe those are the strongest brands. The customers took ownership of it, really. Sometimes, we joke the less we manage the Dacia brand, the better it goes. If we start thinking about it, we might mess it up!”

That looks good, let's we have more power to go with the good looks, the current petrol model must be one of the laziest SUV in the country.

New Renault Duster revealed (wearing Dacia badge)!

Yes, it’s wearing a Dacia badge, but what you see here is essentially the new Renault Duster, and it’s set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Although the styling changes are subtle, this model is actually the second-generation version of what has become a much-loved SUV around the world, including here in South Africa.

The automaker has yet to go into too much detail about the new Duster’s underpinnings or powertrains, but it’s clear that the latest model adopts a rugged design not far removed from that of the original.

That said, the new Duster does gain a more distinctive grille that extends between the headlamps. The front also features a new, three-part LED daytime running light signature, a few more creases in the bonnet and a scratch-resistant, satin-chrome-finished skid plate on the lower section of the front bumper.

Round back, you’ll find similar revisions, including new taillamps and another skid plate. The new Duster also boasts a higher belt line than before, while the windscreen has been shifted forward by 100 mm, making the cabin a little longer and a touch more spacious.

You’ll also notice new aluminium roof bars and fresh 17-inch wheels under chunky wheel arches, along with black wing trim. The brand furthermore promises a “completely redesigned, quality-feel interior” as well as new equipment.

Expect more information regarding the Duster to be revealed at Frankfurt.

2018 Renault Duster First Photos Released

Here are the first official images of the Renault Duster, ahead of its public reveal at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

While these photos show the Dacia version of the Duster, we bet that the Renault version is identical. With over a million units sold since it's launch, the Renault Duster has proven popular thanks to a combination of value for money, capability and practicality.

Pictured here in its launch colour called Atacama Orange, the all-new Duster features a new grille with LED daytime running lights. Other changes include a repositioned windscreen which sits 100 mm forward to increase cabin space, new 17-inch alloy wheels, new-look rear lights and a wider rear skid plate. There are also numerous changes to the cabin and equipment, as well as engines, but Renault has not released any other information. We'll keep you posted if any further updates are released.

Renault releases first pics of new SA-bound Duster

Renault-owned Dacia has released the first pictures of its redesigned Duster ahead of the vehicle’s scheduled world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 12.

The Duster is sold as a Renault in most markets, including ours, and Renault SA tells us that the new version is likely to land on our shores during the second half of 2018.

But just how new is it exactly?

Though the styling is clearly evolutionary, and the basic design language sticks to the familiar, the affordable SUV has undergone a complete redesign and boasts a cleaner and dare we say slightly more mature look than before. Exterior design highlights include satin-chrome-finished skid plates, new aluminium roof bars and stacked-square taillights.

The second-generation Duster also has more interior space, with the windscreen having been brought forward by 100mm.
The cabin also boasts a completely new design, but we’ll have to take Renault’s word on that for now as the interior will only be revealed in Frankfurt, when Renault will also no doubt reveal all the other details such as features, and engines.

Watch this space on September 12.

Renault 'surprised' other firms haven't copied Dacia

Groupe Renault's design boss says the firm expected Romanian marque to be facing competition from other budget brands by now

Groupe Renault design boss Laurens van den Acker says he is surprised that other major car firms haven’t attempted to copy Dacia’s success by launching low-cost spin-off brands.

Renault bought the Romanian marque in 1999 and started launching new models in 2004, focusing on making "robust", affordable cars. Through a major expansion programme – which included rolling out in the UK in 2012 – Dacia sold more than four million cars last year.

Speaking at the unveiling of the new Duster SUV, van den Acker said: “We’ve been surprised because we know the competition will come, sooner or later. We expected it to be there already, so it’s quite amazing there’s still no straight competitor for the Duster in the market.”

Van den Acker said the company’s commitment to keeping Dacia models affordable has helped it fill a market gap. He added: “Renault has had incredible discipline not to raise prices. Even our German friends have brands that start to bump into the brand above.

“Dacia has been really good at keeping their promise. Not all the money saving comes from cars; it’s in the business model: where we produce the cars, the fact Dacia are sold off the back of the Renault network, often in the same dealership.

“It you took Renault out, you couldn’t sell Dacia as a separate brand; for another company to create a new brand, they’d have to create a new network, which is very expensive, and that would find its way into the [price of the] car. The Renault/Dacia business model is unique and perhaps that’s why it’s hard to replicate.”

Hardly surprising, it's not like the current Duster was the best looking car out there, just means maybe other Romanian car companies have better taste.

The turbo diesel 4WD is awesome though. Agreed that this one looks much better than the current one. Well done

Duster still waiting for true competition – Renault

The new Dacia Duster, which is heading to SA wearing the Renault badge.

Renault’s design chief says he is “surprised” that rival automakers have yet to launch their own budget subsidiaries to take on the French brand’s Dacia line, adding that he feels there is still “no straight competitor for the Duster”.

Laurens van den Acker made the comments to Autocar at the reveal of the second-generation Duster.

“We’ve been surprised because we know the competition will come, sooner or later. We expected it to be there already, so it’s quite amazing there’s still no straight competitor for the Duster in the market,” Van den Acker said.

Dacia has been a subsidiary of Renault since 1999. Of course, in some markets – including South Africa – certain Dacia products (such as the Duster) actually wear the Renault badge.

“Not all the money saving comes from cars. It’s in the business model: where we produce the cars, the fact Dacia [products] are sold off the back of the Renault network, often in the same dealership.

“It you took Renault out, you couldn’t sell Dacia as a separate brand; for another company to create a new brand, they’d have to create a new network, which is very expensive, and that would find its way into the [price of the] car. The Renault/Dacia business model is unique and perhaps that’s why it’s hard to replicate,” he added.
