The road to being an architect [?]

What makes an architect ?
What is a good architect ?
Is there certification for this?

Ok so I've got a few questions, but how does one become an architect ?

By learning the correct word. There is nothing like an architech. There is however an architect :)

Solution Architect = Software Developer + Business Analyst + Systems Integrator + 8 (or more) years of experience.

Or sometimes - just being a self titled idiot who knows nothing but being able to bull****.

Worked with some "Architect" who used all the jargon when he talks, but couldn't code shyte to save his life. I hate those.

Architect in what profession?

Doesn't this already give context?

I did not notice the category, but it is still applicable to:

  • Full-time occupation;
  • educational establishment (training);
  • codes;
  • and laws.
All the above will answer your three questions.

Then the main criteria in which you have to specialise:

  • Enterprise
  • Solutions
  • Application
And naturally the various sub-categories.

I'm sort of open on this one - an architect doesn't necessarily need to know how to code (anymore) - but he needs to understand the fundamentals, and what would be required of the development team.

I mean, I used to be a .NET software developer, but struggle now when doing simple scripts - but I still understand the fundamentals, and can see if someone doesn't know wtf they doing.

Uhm no. Rather:
  • Business
  • IS (Information System -> Application / Data)
  • Information

Those are the three broad fields.

Also, when your an architect you should have absolutely nothing to do with the development of software and thus the reason why having a programmers/developer background is not required at all.

There are quite a lot of Frameworks out there when it comes to proper EA, but the two bigger 'Frameworks' is:

There is this screwed up notion that some senior software devs get assigned the title solutions architect. This only makes him some *special* dev (apparently), but he is most certainly not an architect. A true architect will not come close to actual development of software.
