Are Springboks' ticket prices too high? 'Big Mac Index' reveals the alarming truth

South Africans are up in arms about the ticket prices for the Springboks’ upcoming matches in June and July and it’s starting to show in the slow sales.

In 2024, South Africans packed out stadiums around the country to get a glimpse of Rassie Erasmus’ all-conquering world champions.

All six home Test matches were fully sold out, as South Africans flocked to the stadiums to watch their beloved Boks continue where they left off in France at the 2023 Rugby World Cup the year before.
...
IOL Business contributor Nicola Mawson helped us to compare ticket prices for some of the Springboks’ away matches this year, including the highly anticipated Rugby Championship match against the All Blacks at Auckland’s Eden Park, using the “Big Mac Index”.
...
According to the data, the most expensive ticket for the clash between the Boks and the All Blacks is - comparatively speaking after the calculations - R968 compared to the top-end R3,000 tickets for the South Africans’ home matches.

The most expensive tickets for the Springboks’ matches against Argentina in London and Wales in Cardiff are also much cheaper, with the prices calculated at R1,469 and R1,017 respectively.

This, (high ticket prices), is among the reasons that rugby is still seen by the masses as a priviledged sport for the wealthy.
I understand the need for the unions and SA Rugby to make a profit but these prices are just ridiculous.

The biggest problem is the Unions aren't making money, SARU is not in a great financial position. Main issues is the player salasries we just can't compete with Europe.

Fair enough but pricing the average Joe out of the market is not going to improve the situation.
If the tickets are selling out there's not really a reason to lower the prices. If government wants SA Rugby to be a charity then they should provide tax payer funding (which I'm not really in favour of either).

In terms of tickets selling out, there will always be enough rich idiots driving up the price.

OK, it's URC Quarter-Finals tonight and tomorrow!

* Glasgow vs Stormers (Tonight - 20H35) Game could go either way, I'm hoping it's a Stormers win by 1-3 points,
* Bulls vs Edinburgh (Saturday, 31 May - 13H30) Bulls should have enough ammo to win by 5-10 points,
* Leinster vs Scarlets (Saturday, 31 May - 16H00) Leinster to blow Scarlets away by 15+ points,
* Sharks vs Munster (Saturday, 31 May - 18H30) Another tough one to call. Sharks have underperformed while still winning. Munster play good knock-out rugby. I'm going with my heart for a 3-5 point Shark's victory.

First off Stormers were **** and the score was a fair reflection.

But can someone explain the sending off of Senatla after one offence and not sending off Glasgow players after multiple offenses, both were near the tryline.

Senatla didnt hit anyone high nor that silly try to intercept and knocked it on law. Nor was the attacking team in a guaranteed position to score a try..

I have seen this happen before and I am genuinely interested/puzzled on this

Jis man the officials are missing so much I'm questioning whether or not I know the laws...

I dont make comments on the game for games with final in them so well done Bulls.

The Sharks is just utter utter ****ing garbage. Can't catch a rugby ball to save their lives. Just absolute ****. I've never wanted a SA team to lose but I hate these useless feckers.
