I think two things on that.

1. if that became the case I'm sure it would be a challenge electorally and challenged Judicially to keep it going long term
2. if any president/party had that much power to keep a president going term after term I would imagine they would also have enough power to change the constitution and would like most presidents for life.

we still haven't had two term president since the dawn of democracy so I don't think there is any danger at this stage.

The constitution covers this. You must also not be succeeded by someone else, for it to not count as a term.

Which is why Motlanthe's period of service counted as a term (was succeeded by Zuma), while Cyril's didn't (succeeded by himself).

If anyone tried to play musical chairs, their brief period as president would count as a term. At most you can serve 2-and a bit terms as Cyril did...

I.e. if a President leaves (for whatever reason) and someone is elected before the next general elections... They are considered caretaker and not using a full term unless someone else is elected directly after them as @Mike Hoxbig said.

A recall is different to end of term. Mbeki and Zuma were recalled prior to their second terms ending for various reasons. Mbeki lost control of the minions while Zuma was forced out due to corruption allegations.

What will be interesting is whether the ANC allow Ramaphosa to complete his second term as President of South Africa or if they push in parliament for his recall. They have enough seats to make such a move possible.

Probably, but it depends on who wins in 2027.

If the Ramas win, he'll stay as Republic Pres. But if they lose, it'll be Mbeki/Zuma all over again.

Yes, that is what I mean by "lets see if he can be the first president to finish his second term".

The ANC will never allow that. Lootfreely House always ran things (not Parliament) when ANC had more than 50%. Now they don't, so NEC can get stuffed now.
