The SA Politics Thread Part 6

Anyone seen the rand? Crashing against the Dollar - investors clearly spooked by the messy coalitions we are going to see. More pain in the short term, but hopefully long term gain. Coalitions are messy all over the world, so our first one as a relatively young democracy is going to be a bloodbath.

Edit: in terms of coalitions, we will have to see if any of the following may occur:
1. ANC + EFF > 50%
2. ANC + MK > 50%
3. ANC + MK + EFF > 67%.

That third one is scary af

Even if they go below 50% they will still govern in a coalition government because they will promise some party a position or 2.

It looks like they will be below 45%, which means they will probably have to be in a coalition with one of the big 3 i.e., DA, EFF or MK. That means having to shift on certain policies potentially, giving away some actual minister posts with teeth, as well as a Deputy President position. All very unknown and risky.

Did we, the ANC, win already?
oh.. you all still going through the motions.

That's fine. They won't be able to force through bills and budgets on their own, and that party will eventually die like GOOD did for being complicit. Still a win.

Also means that every single ANC MP as well as their partners need to be present for MONC votes etc. It's a helluva lot better than we have now. The only way back for them is to try and win back votes in the next elections by actually doing some work and holding some cadres accountable...

Option #4: a minority government

Exactly this. Loosing their national majority is a massive blow to the ANC and a major win to SA. Regardless of the coalitions. The ANC simply being able to push through budgets, policies and whatever else on their own, is gone.

If we had this back in 2014 -

- Zuma would have been removed by MONCO and ANC would not have been able to stop it
- NHI would not have been pushed through

And much more.

So this is a good thing, regardless of coalition's

To put it another way; if anyone in 2019 said ANC was loosing majority to below 45% in 2024 - we'd have asked them for the drugs they were on. Come 2029 - ANC will be a rural party, not in government. That's monumental for SA - who have had ANC wreck the country for 30 bloody years.
