The SA Vehicle Industry Thread

What one has to remember is that sales are dependent on supply.
If, or instance, Suzuki Jimny only sell 29 units it because there were only 29 units to sell.
So the same would apply to Ford.
If there were only so many to build , there would only so many to sell.
Noted, but one would have thought that Ford particularly, as a local manufacturer, would have been able to better balance demand and supply.

The Ford Figo should really be doing better all things considered - engine , dealership network etc. It should be selling as well as the VW Polo Vivo or close to that.

I've been saying this repeatedly. Visit a Ford dealer and see what their stock level is of the Figo.
Whatever they can lay their hands on, they grab and sell.

Many popular models of any product are on allocation.
So the actual sales are determined by stock availability and not demand.
In popular motor parlance the dealer tells the OEM:
" Make what we sell, instead of us having to sell what you make."

Suzuki South Africa breaks its sales record in June 2019!

Suzuki South Africa says June 2019 was its best sales month yet, with 1 479 new vehicles registered during the sixth month of the year.

This represents the best month for sales in the company’s ten-year history in South Africa, allowing the local arm of the Japanese automaker to grab a claimed overall market share of 3,22 percent (its highest on record). Indeed, in June 2019, Suzuki SA outsold the likes of the BMW Group, Kia and Mazda.

“In the first quarter of our 2019/20 financial year, our dealers managed to sell 2 984 vehicles, which is a whopping improvement of 31 percent compared to the same period last year,” said André Venter, Suzuki SA’s divisional manager for sales and marketing.

“The dealer network has, on average, now sold more than 900 units a month for the last three months in a row, and in June sales broke through the 1 000 barrier for only the second time since we established the company in South Africa in 2009,” he added.

As we pointed out in an earlier story, the Swift was the top seller for the brand in June with 548 units, while the Celerio added 249 and the Ignis a further 204. The new Ertiga managed 143 units, while the Dzire (98), Vitara (64), Baleno (59), Jimny (29) and Ciaz (19) all ended up in double figures. The ageing Grand Vitara added three units (and found itself on the worst-selling list), while 63 more registrations came in the commercial segment.

Biggest vehicle-exporters from South Africa in June 2019

According to Naamsa, the South African automotive industry’s June 2019 export sales registered “strong growth”, reflecting a year-on-year climb of 14,3 percent, with 30 604 units shipped off during the month.

So, let’s take a look at which automakers were the biggest exporters from South Africa for the month.

In June, Mercedes-Benz returned to the top spot (up from fourth), with 8 143 units of its C-Class exported from the East London plant. This represents a substantial increase of 4 252 units, month on month.

The Volkswagen Group thus dropped one place to second, exporting 6 293 examples (down a full 3 106 units) of its Polo hatchback from Uitenhage. Toyota, meanwhile, moved up two to third place, with an export figure of 6 133 units, including 5 686 examples of its Hilux, 352 units of the Fortuner and 95 of the Corolla sedan (all built at its Prospecton factory). This total is up 2 519 units on the Japanese firm’s effort in May.

Biggest exporters for June 2019:

1. Mercedes-Benz: 8 143
2. Volkswagen Group: 6 293
3. Toyota: 6 133
4. BMW Group: 5 885
5. Ford Motor Company: 3 359
6. Nissan: 436

SEE: These are SA's most popular car and bakkie brands of 2019 (so far)

With the second half of 2019 well underway, we reflect on which manufacturers sold the most cars in South Africa.

It should come as no shock but Toyota top the best-sellers list so far this year, with its Hilux bakkie leading the charge. Toyota solidified itself as the top selling automaker so far in 2019 with 63 919 units.

That huge figure includes all vehicles Toyota sells locally.

I think Honda has a pretty big dealer network compared to FCA (who is comically far from their 4000 pa 'reasonable target'). The Honda dealerships are also a bit fancier and often more Honda specific (though some are bizarre multi brand setups). Those dealers must be sweating. It also doesn't seem like there is anything compelling coming in the short term either.

Honda needs a better B segment polo car. And cheaper parts/service. They have frightened their existing customers and failed to attract new ones.

Agreed, I used to see a lot of those one generation older CRV, but the new one is just not as popular. That goes to the civic as well. Is it because of pricing or marketing?

SA's 20 best selling SUVs in the first half of 2019

South Africa is bakkie country, no arguments there, but SUVs and crossovers are becoming an increasingly formidable force on the local market, largely at the expense of traditional sedans and hatchbacks.

But which ones are the most popular?

Toyota’s Fortuner, now in its second generation, continues to lead the South African SUV market by a healthy margin and averages sales of more than 1000 units a month. In fact its best month in 2019 so far saw 1410 units moved. The Fortuner is based on the Hilux bakkie and buyers love it for its rugged nature, towing ability and roomy cabin.

Next up is Ford’s little EcoSport, of which a monthly average of 692 were sold in the first half of 2019. Last year the EcoSport was given an update, which also brought a smarter cabin, and the EcoSport remains one of the more affordable SUVs

SA loves German cars: Polo, 3 Series, A3 - top-selling Bavarian brands in Mzansi

From Volkswagen's budget Polos to Audi's premium A3, we look at top-performing German automakers in South Africa during the first half of 2019.

Some of the manufacturers in our below list produce light commercial vehicles (LCVs), as well trucks and buses, but our list will only focus on the passenger vehicles for fairness among the contenders.

Volkswagen was the top-selling German automaker in South Africa with a solid 33 761 new passenger vehicles sold from January to June, according to Naamsa. Mercedes-Benz was second with 9662 units, followed by BMW which sold 7774.

Audi performed well to garner 4076 signatures during the past few months, while Porsche, understandably, is last with 707 luxury models sold.

Go-slow at PE port affecting SA car production

A go-slow by workers at a major port near Port Elizabeth is hitting exports of cars as well as production, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan said on Thursday.

State-owned rail operator Transnet said it had suspended a number of employees at its Ngqura Container Terminal for engaging in what it said was an illegal industrial action.

The go-slow has reportedly also resulted in Volkswagen dramatically slowing down production at its Uitenhage, due to a shortage of parts that are imported via that port. Two shifts were cancelled and staff were sent home on Wednesday, and the company was falling short of its daily target of 680 units by 400.

Mercedes-Benz vs. BMW: the sales race halfway through 2019

Mercedes-Benz and BMW have both released their sales figures for the first half of 2019, so it’s time to take a look at which of the two German giants is leading this year's race for the title of the world’s best-selling premium automotive brand.

The BMW brand registered 1 075 959 units over the first six months of 2019, representing an increase of 1,6 percent, year on year. The Mercedes-Benz brand, meanwhile, reached 1 134 729 units over the same period, shrinking by 4,6 percent. By our maths, that sees the Stuttgart-based automaker ahead by 58 770 units (for the record, Audi delivered 906 200 units, some 4,5 percent down).

The BMW Group (as opposed to brand), meanwhile, claimed it was still the “world’s leading premium manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles”. And the stats bear that out: as a group (thus including the BMW brand, Mini, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad), the Munich-based firm hit 1 252 837 units (up 0,8 percent), some 57 790 units ahead of Mercedes-Benz Cars (which includes the Mercedes brand as well as Smart), which ended on 1 195 047 units.

Ford SA increases Ranger production, creating 1200 extra jobs

Ford Southern Africa announced on Wednesday that it would hire an additional 1200 staff at its Silverton assembly plant, an increase of over 25 percent, to add an extra shift and raise production.

The additional shift, which will increase production to 720 vehicles per day, is the result of a R3 billion investment in South Africa that was announced in 2017, aimed at increasing annual production to 168 000 units.

The local division currently employs around 4300 people in South Africa, split between the Gauteng plant, which will add the extra shift, and Port Elizabeth engine production facility.

I have a Suzuki. Its sales are increasing on a regular basis. Top sales were reached in June.

It is a good product and the dealership network is top class.

Why, I ask, did you not buy a Suzuki when it was on the option list of cars that you wanted to buy?

That's quite a sad number. I recall several years ago hearing a news report that we were heading for a million car sales per annum. We'll be lucky to break 300k this year!

Edit: seems annual sales have continued to decline since 2008

"total industry sales of 676 098 units in 2007"

SA vehicle sales: Yaris challenges Polo in budget car stakes

The iconic Volkswagen Polo remains the budget car of choice for South African motorists. However, the Toyota Yaris is in hot pursuit of this title!

This much has emerged from an analysis of search data on AutoTrader over the period 1 January 2019 to 30 June 2019. Given that AutoTrader is South Africa’s most visited motoring marketplace, its search data is widely acknowledged as an accurate barometer of consumer likes and dislikes.

According to AutoTrader CEO George Mienie, it will be hard for the Yaris to unseat the Polo: "The Polo is an automotive icon, which enjoys legendary status in the local market. It offers Golf-like ride quality, exemplary styling in and out and an attractive price tag; these traits are much appreciated by discerning motorists."

Having said this, the Yaris has leapt to second position (it did not feature on the 2018 top 10 list*).

SEE: Ford F-Series, Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max - the world’s best-selling bakkies

The global bakkie/pick-up market is a lucrative one; nearly every manufacturer builds one and those that don’t want a piece of the pie (ie Mercedes-Benz X-Class).

But do you know which automaker sells the most bakkies globally? Which model is the best-selling bakkie around the world? Data by focus2move shows the best-selling bakkies by brand.

Ford sold the most bakkies in 2018 with a global sales figure of 1 353 141 units! Toyota was second with 998 120 units, followed by Chevrolet (899 809).
