The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) said that declining trend in new vehicle sales continued into July 2019 with lower passenger car sales again being offset by growth in all commercial vehicle segments.
Reflecting on the new vehicle sales statistics for July 2019, Naamsa confirmed that aggregate domestic sales at 46 077 units reflected a decline of 1779 units or 3.7% from the 47 856 vehicles sold in July last year.

The sales figures for August 2019 are in ... and the big news from our list of South Africa’s best-selling bakkies is that the Ford Ranger has dropped out of the top two.
According to Naamsa, August 2019's new vehicle industry sales came in at 45 537 units, representing a decline of 5,1 percent, year on year. The light commercial segment (14 041 units), meanwhile, showed a small gain of 0,5 percent compared with the corresponding month in 2018. So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the eighth month of 2019?

Naamsa: August 2019 – sales fall again but exports hit record
The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) said the status quo of a “steady decline” in the overall new vehicle market continued into August 2019.
The organisation confirmed that aggregate domestic sales at 45 537 units reflected a decline of 2 440 units or 5,1 percent from the 47 977 vehicles sold in August last year. Monthly export sales, meanwhile, registered further strong gains in line with industry expectations. Particularly noteworthy was the fact the August 2019 export figure of 44 566 vehicles was the highest monthly total on record, Naamsa said.
Overall, out of the total reported industry sales of 45 537 vehicles, an estimated 37 154 units or 81,6 percent represented dealer sales, an estimated 12,6 percent represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 3,9 percent to industry corporate fleets, and 1,9 percent to government.
The August 2019 new passenger car market had registered a decline of 2 381 cars or a fall of 7,6 percent to 29 075 units compared to the 31 456 new cars sold in August last year. The car rental industry’s contribution accounted for a substantial 18,0 percent of new car sales in August 2019.

South Africa’s new vehicle market continued its downward slide in August 2019, with total vehicle sales declining by 3.7 percent versus the same month last year, to total 46 077, according to Naamsa.
Although the overall market was down, it’s worth noting that sales of light commercial vehicles actually increased by 2.9 percent year-on-year, while the medium and heavies gained 14.9 percent and 21.4 percent respectively, but the passenger car market took a big beating, declining by 8.2 percent.

According to Naamsa, August 2019's new vehicle industry sales came in at 45 537 units, representing a decline of 5,1 percent, year on year. Here’s what happened in the eighth month of the year in the passenger vehicle segment...
As always, it’s interesting to take a look at what’s going on in terms of individual model sales. We’ve already examined the figures and picked out the 10 best-selling bakkies for the month, and now it’s time to do the same with the passenger vehicle market.
Take note that while BMW has started reporting individual model sales figures again, some brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Haval continue to provide only aggregate data.
So, what happened in August 2019? Well, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo held onto the top spot, with the Polo hatchback again having to settle for second place (for the record, the local arm of the German firm also sold 540 examples of its Polo sedan).
The Renault Kwid climbed four places to third, while the Toyota Fortuner moved up one to fourth. The Ford Figo returned to the table to grab fifth, with the Hyundai Grand i10 gaining three spots to place sixth.
The Datsun Go likewise make a reappearance to snaffle seventh, forcing the Kia Picanto down two places to eighth. The Suzuki Swift moved up one to ninth, while the Ford EcoSport (dropping six places) and Hyundai i20 (falling seven) shared the final spot on the list.

Despite the local industry struggling, there are a few brands which achieving above average sales with specific models. The most notable overachiever in sales last month was from Nissan.

The monthly Naamsa stats generally make for rather interesting reading. But, naturally, we tend to focus on the best-performing vehicles in terms of sales. Indeed, we’ve already reported the 10 best-selling passenger vehicles of August 2019, as well as listed the 10 best-selling bakkies in our market for the same period. But now we’ve decided to take a look at the worst-selling passenger car models on our shores.
Of course, we must point out that some automakers (such as Mercedes-Benz) disclose only aggregate sales statistics. Also, take note that – in order to make this list more relevant – we’ve excluded vehicle ranges that start at more than R500 000. Otherwise, this table would be dominated by luxury manufacturers such as Bentley, Ferrari and Maserati, whose high-priced vehicles traditionally sell in tiny numbers.
In addition, we don’t count sales from run-out stock of vehicles that have been officially discontinued locally (if the vehicle in question is no longer listed on the manufacturer’s local site, we won’t include it in the list below). And we’ve also heeded the call to include model ranges that failed to sell a single unit.

Biggest vehicle-exporters from South Africa in August 2019
According to Naamsa, the South African automotive industry’s August 2019 export sales represented the highest monthly total on record, reflecting a climb of 37,8 percent, with 44 566 units shipped off during the month.
So, let’s take a look at which automakers were the biggest exporters from South Africa for the month.
In August, the Volkswagen Group rocketed back to the top of the pile (after placing fifth in July), exporting a whopping 15 659 examples (up some 12 732 units) of its Polo hatchback from Uitenhage. From what we understand, the firm effectively caught up after a slow month in July caused by a strike at the Port of Ngqura.
Mercedes-Benz thus fell to second place with 8 869 units of its C-Class exported from the East London plant. This represents a decrease of 626 units, month on month.
Ford, meanwhile, dropped one to third, shipping off 7 032 units (comprising 6 982 units of the Ranger and 50 of the Everest) from its Silverton facility in the month. This represents a drop of 2 221 units over July’s effort.

Suzuki South Africa registers third record sales month in a row!
Suzuki Auto South Africa registered its best month for sales yet in August 2019, while also welcoming its 75 000th local customer.
In August, the local arm of the Japanese firm sold 1 581 new vehicles (comprising 1 552 passenger vehicles and 29 commercial vehicles), which saw it ranked eighth on the list of best-selling automakers.
As we pointed out in our earlier report on SA’s best-selling vehicles, the Swift again led the way for Suzuki, selling 663 units and placing ninth.
The Ignis (188), Celerio (141), Dzire (140), Ertiga (138) and Jimny (115) also contributed gamely, while the Baleno, Vitara and Ciaz each ended in double figures. Only the Grand Vitara failed to make it out of single figures, again placing on our list of worst-selling vehicles.

Peugeot South Africa upgrades range-wide warranty and service plan!
Peugeot South Africa has quietly upgraded its standard warranty and service plan, offering the extended items across its local range.
Dubbed “Peugeot Pride” (and standard on all models sold from 1 September 2019), the upgraded warranty and service plan each span five years or 100 000 km.
Previously, the local arm of the French automaker offered a three-year warranty on its passenger vehicle line-up, while service plans ranged from three years or 45 000 km (in the case of the 208 hatchback and 2008 crossover) to four years or 60 000 km (for the larger 308 and 3008).
From what we understand, the upgraded warranty and service plan will extend to the soon-to-launch 108 and 5008, too.
The extended arrangements furthermore include a “complimentary vehicle health check”, access to a courtesy car (although the terms and conditions are not yet clear), a licence renewal reminder system, roadside assistance and use of the My Peugeot App.
“We are putting the customer at the centre of our key priority to build loyalty and create strong brand value,” Peugeot SA says on its website.

Previously, the local arm of the French automaker offered a three-year warranty on its passenger vehicle line-up, while service plans ranged from three years or 45 000 km (in the case of the 208 hatchback and 2008 crossover) to four years or 60 000 km (for the larger 308 and 3008).
From what we understand, the upgraded warranty and service plan will extend to the soon-to-launch 108 and 5008, too.
The extended arrangements furthermore include a “complimentary vehicle health check”, access to a courtesy car (although the terms and conditions are not yet clear), a licence renewal reminder system, roadside assistance and use of the My Peugeot App.
“We are putting the customer at the centre of our key priority to build loyalty and create strong brand value,” Peugeot SA says on its website.
