The SA Vehicle Industry Thread

Yes.. and no. It's basically inflation based.. so what would happen and has happen in SA is that the increases just freezes up while inflation or rather salary growth catches up and sales improve to an 'acceptable' level. I've never seen prices drop purely due to bad sales especially for cars unless dated. The knock on of course is that when costs no longer increase, salaries also will stagnate. thereby restoring the same situation haha

Our official inflation is 6%, not 10+ (yes I know in reality that 6% is bs, just saying car price hikes exceed official inflation)
I'm not proposing a "bad sales" scenario though, I'm talking a complete stop. We've never seen such a scenario and neither has the motor trade, it is guaranteed to bankrupt more than a few dealerships and whoever is stuck with thousands of units that they can't move will have to become creative.

That's nothing, I bought my previous car for R350k, it was 6 months old at the time with 10k on the clock, BMW 325i

At the end of 2015 I shopped for another 10k on the clock equivalent BMW that's less than 2 years old, the 328i would be the closest match seeing as the 325i doesn't exist anymore... It was not possible to find one for less than R550k!?!

That's a 200k (or 57%) increase from 350k in about 5 years, a nice steady 10-11% increase EVERY year. It is simply not sustainable, that is why you see almost every 3 series on the road these days is a 320i or less, and even those are going for over 600k when new ... W-T-F?!?

BMW, sincerely, you make awesome cars, but GFY!
Absolutely ridiculous!

This explains why so many people who could get a BMW 3series or Merc C Class some years ago are now looking at Hot Hatches and cheaper Crossovers.

Many are just keeping their cars after paying it off and getting a smaller runaround to keep the KMs down in the larger car.

It's worse because most salaries are tied to official inflation. 10%+ might be a real world figure, but it's completely unrealistic to expect sales not to suffer if you're going to increase your prices by more than a customer's salary is increased. You can't have it both ways - if your customer takes pain then you have to accept that you will take pain...

I thought you were talking k@k, but, holy smokes - mid R500k's for a 320. No man!! 3 series wtf.PNG

I'm sorry, but why would you buy a 3 series for R500k when you can get a top spec double cab for the same amount? Badge badge badge!

Or a "peasant" sedan and save R100-200k

Cos not everyone owns a pair of long khaki socks...

Well I switched from my 3 series to a Subaru XV :p

But to answer your question, aside from posing with a spiffy BMW badge, it's the drive. I'm not talking about the pansy 320i or 318i brigade, the 6 cylinder BMW's are amazing! I had 160kw on tap and a 330i gives you 185kw. It will absolutely destroy any double cab when it comes to what it is built for: high speed driving.

In fact I never wanted a BMW, ever, but then I took one for a test drive ...

I do agree that drive and power are something else, but for me personally, could not spend what these new car prices require.

Agreed, that's why I ended up getting something other than another BMW 3 series. I'm just glad their stupid prices broken my psychological limits before it ever broken my financial limits, it's like they shocked me out of a trance.

You know things are getting mental when a freaking 1.2 Picanto is just shy of R200k

R200,000 for a Picanto, R550,000 for a 320...

Is this real life?
When the entry level Spark Campus is R141000, when we bought my wife's in 2014 it was R99k, the Go came in at R85k for the entry level.

Is there a way to get the NAAMSA sales figures broken down per vehicle model derivative (as in so many 1.4 Vivo blueline, so many maxx etc etc)? I know thry exist because this is where the media sources the figures, but the NAAMSA website only offers the public per manufacturer figures.

Not sure, I get the NAAMSA long fax monthly and it breaks things down by manufacturer and type (i.e. Audi - Audi A3), but can't see anything about derivative beyond that.

849 BMW 3 series' sold in December 2016, clearly the seriously high prices aren't affecting everyone.

Municipalities. SOE. etc etc....

There are enough people who don't really work for their money, so buying cars is cheap
