South African new vehicle sales boom continues - these were the top manufacturers in November 2025

South Africa’s new vehicle sales boom continued unabated in November, with year-on-year sales increasing by 12.5%.

New vehicle sales totalled 54,896 units last month, according to Naamsa, up from the 48,783 units recorded in November 2024, albeit marginally down on the decade high of 55,956 units registered in October.

The aggressive marketing of a wide range of affordable vehicles from China and India is playing a major role in boosting sales, said Brandon Cohen, Chairperson of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA). Rental vehicle sales are also making a significant contribution, he added.

“As we approach the end of 2025, the motor industry has once again shown that making sales forecasts is becoming more of an art than science. There are very few industry commentators who could have predicted the vehicle sales boom that we’ve seen in the second half of the year,” Cohen said.

Passenger car sales totalled 39,158 units in November, representing an 11.0% increase over the same month last year. Meanwhile, light commercial vehicles and bakkies grew at an even faster rate of 20.5%, totalling 10,827 units. The larger commercials were a mixed bag, however, with medium commercial vehicles recording a 0.6% loss and the heavies gaining 1.3%.

“South Africa’s macroeconomic landscape in November presented a rare alignment of positive shifts in inflation, fuel pricing, fiscal credibility, and monetary policy - each contributing to improved affordability and confidence across households and firms,” Naamsa said in a statement.

November’s sales performance reflects a market responding to a more supportive economic environment, Wesbank marketing head Lebo Gaoaketse added.

Top 5 Vehicle Exporters in SA – November 2025

We have compiled a list of the top five vehicle exporters in South Africa in November 2025. See the list below.

According to naamsa, a total number of 35 848 new vehicles were exported in November 2025 – representing a 3.9% (or 1 437-unit) decrease compared to the 37 285 units exported in November 2024. However, year-to-date vehicle exports remain 5.6% ahead of the same period last year, reflecting resilience and growth, despite global demand conditions and renewed geopolitical tensions following the G20 Summit. In addition, last month saw an increase of 3 189 units exported compared to the 32 659 units exported in October 2025.

Volkswagen Group Africa remained South Africa’s largest exporter of vehicles in October 2025, with naamsa reporting 11 536 units were exported from the Wolfsburg brand’s Kariega assembly line, where the Polo and Polo GTI are exclusively produced, to global markets. Ford, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz South Africa were the only automakers that saw an increase in exports in November 2025 compared to October 2025. I wonder what is wrong with the Japanese companies, because Isuzu and Nissan are sleeping on the job, they could be doing a lot more to expand their offering, you can't put all your eggs in the bakkie basket, it will crash spectacularly if some disruptor was to come along.

Chery Tiggo 4 outsells Corolla Cross: Five interesting facts about November’s vehicle sales

South African new vehicle sales are booming, with 2025 set to be one of the industry’s strongest years of the past decade.

November alone saw a year-on-year increase of 12.5%, with 54,896 shiny new vehicles finding homes - read the full story here - but last month was kinder to some than others. One thing’s for sure: Chinese and Indian-built vehicles are vying for market domination.

Here are five interesting trends that have emerged.

Tiggo 4 takes SUV crown: For the second month in a row, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro has overtaken the Toyota Corolla Cross as South Africa’s top-selling SUV.

In November, the compact Tiggo range saw a total volume of 1,838 units, versus the Corolla’s 1,651. Keep in mind, though, that these figures include the Tiggo Cross, which is a newer-generation version of the Tiggo 4, albeit a much slower seller on local shores.

However, Toyota still completed the SUV podium, with its Urban Cruiser (1,325 units) taking third spot ahead of the Suzuki Fronx and Haval Jolion.

Jetour T2 makes an impressive start: Jetour’s recently-launched T2 series managed an impressive volume of 545 units in its first month of sales.

How well did Omoda C7 and BAIC B30 sell in launch month?

The Omoda C7 and BAIC B30 both hit South Africa in November 2025. So, how well did these new Chinese crossovers sell in their launch month? We have the figures…

- Both Chinese crossovers launched in SA in November
- Omoda C7 outsold related Jaecoo J7 and flagship C9
- B30 accounted for 45.2% of BAIC’s total for the month

South Africa’s new-vehicle market has gained several new Chinese crossovers in recent times, including the Omoda C7 and BAIC B30 in November 2025. So, how well were these newcomers received in their launch month?

Well, according to figures reported to industry-representative body Naamsa, Omoda & Jaecoo registered 161 units of the C7 last month, all via the dealer channel. That meant the C7 outsold both the flagship C9 (36 units) and the Jaecoo J7 (147 units).

The Jaecoo J5 added 287 units, while the Omoda C5 again proved the Chery sub-brand’s most popular product, with 777 units sold. In the end, Omoda & Jaecoo hit a record total of 1 408 units, falling just short of cracking the top 10 in November 2025 in the process.

What about the BAIC B30? Well, the Beijing-based firm registered 56 units of the B30 last month (likewise all via the dealer channel), representing 45.2% of the brand’s overall total of 124 units. Interestingly, November 2025 was BAIC’s tied lowest tally of 2025, matching September 2025’s figure.

Toyota Reinforces its Position as SA’s Best-Selling Car Brand with November 2025 Sales

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) continued to top the local sales charts in November 2025.

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM), the top-selling automotive brand in SA, once again topped the national sales charts in November 2025, with the Japanese automaker’s local arm recording 13 576 new-vehicle sales in the eleventh month of this year. This performance nudged TSAM’s market share up to 24.7%, reinforcing the firm’s dominant position despite an increasingly complex trading environment. TSAM’s steady performance comes on the back of an increase in total new-car sales, with naamsa reporting 54 896 new-vehicle sales in November 2025, a 12.5% increase compared to the same month last year.

Toyota continued to lead across multiple segments. In the passenger-car segment, TSAM sold 8 598 units; driven by strong performances from the Corolla Cross (1 651 units), Starlet (1 619 units), Urban Cruiser (1 325 units) and Starlet Cross (1 085 units) – all of which ranked among South Africa’s top 10 best-selling passenger cars in November. Lexus, Toyota’s luxury arm, also delivered a notable rebound with 90 units, led by the NX (31 units), GX (29 units) and ES (12 units).

In the light-commercial segment, Toyota achieved a commanding 25.9% market share – once again led by the Hilux, which recorded 3 383 units sold and continues to top the list of best-selling bakkies in SA. The Land Cruiser Prado delivered good showing, with the 335 units sold more than doubling its October tally. The Hiace contributed 596 units, while the Quantum posted its best performance of the year with 162 units. Hino, Toyota’s truck division, added a further 262 units to the brand’s overall sales.

When Chinese cars are added to car rental fleets, we'll then know that they are properly mainstream and the parts backup is up to standard - I'm sure it is now a question of when and not if.

But for most, if not all Chinese brands, accident damage parts in local stockholding can still be an issue - I have it on authority from the biggest body repairer in my city that waiting times for back orders can be extensive.

Chery SA Sets New Sales Record in November 2025

Chery South Africa has set a new monthly sales record in November 2025.

Chery South Africa is celebrating its highest monthly sales performance since its return to SA in 2021. In November 2025, Chery SA recorded a total sales figure of 2 506 units sold, the Chinese automaker’s best local monthly sales performance yet. This secured the brand a seventh-place finish among the best-selling car brands in SA and top spot as the best-selling Chinese car brand in South Africa last month.

Leading the charge once again was the Tiggo 4 Pro, which claimed top spot among the best-selling Chinese passenger cars in SA and a podium finish among the overall best-selling passenger cars in SA. Chery also noted that sales of the Tiggo Cross CSH (Chery Super Hybrid) also increased last month, though hasn’t released this model’s individual sales figure.

The Wuhu-based automaker first introduced plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models this year, with the introduction of PHEV versions of the Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9 flagship.

Chery SA attributes its sales success to its dealership network of over 80 branches nationwide, and its expanding range of SUVs and electrified models. The Chinese marque intends to continue its momentum in 2026 with the introduction of its first all-electric models and entry into the highly competitive local bakkie segment with the Himla double-cab, which we sampled in China.

GWM Tank 300 and 500: best sales month yet in SA

The GWM Tank 300 and Tank 500 both put in their best sales performances yet in South Africa, each hitting fresh highs in November 2025. Here’s a look at the figures…

- Tank 300 registers new sales high in SA
- Tank 500 likewise hits best month yet
- New 2.4TD engine driving Tank 300 sales

In November 2025, GWM South Africa’s Tank 300 and Tank 500 ranges each registered fresh sales highs, with a little over 200 units sold between them.

Despite the Chinese company’s overall sales total for November 2025 dipping 9.7% month on month to 2 534 units, the Tank 300 registered its highest total yet, with 184 units sold (3 of which came via the rental channel). That eclipses the ladder-frame SUV’s previous best of 178 units, achieved in July 2025.

As a reminder, in March 2025, GWM SA introduced a pair of new 2.4TD 4×4 derivatives to the Tank 300 range, bringing turbodiesel power to a line-up that had previously comprised only turbopetrol and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrains. In late August 2025, the brand furthermore added a rear-wheel-drive variant with the oil-burning engine, effectively cutting the starting price to R649 900.

The availability of turbodiesel power saw Tank 300 sales surge, with the nameplate breaching the 3-figure mark in this powertrain’s launch month. Furthermore, Conrad Groenewald, Chief Operating Officer of GWM SA, recently told Cars.co.za he was “fighting for more production” of the oil-burning derivatives.

Half our cars come from India: Are SA's car manufacturers facing a crisis as imports rise?

South Africans are buying fewer locally produced vehicles than ever before, sparking fears of deindustrialisation as the market’s appetite for affordably priced imports grows.

Although the growing array of Chinese brands offered locally is usually seen as the greatest threat to local manufacturers, the vast majority of South Africa’s imported cars actually originate from India, according to the latest data from Lightstone.

36% of all the vehicles sold in South Africa in 2024 were imported from India, Lightstone said, while 37% were locally manufactured. Chinese imports accounted for just 11% of vehicle sales last year.

When we exclude the bakkies and light commercial vehicles, India’s share grows to almost half of our market. Lightstone figures for the first five months of 2025, shared exclusively with IOL, show that 49% of all passenger vehicle sales were imports from India.

The majority of these vehicles emanate from the Maruti Suzuki operation in India, which also supplies Toyota with vehicles such as the Starlet, Starlet Cross, Vitz and Urban Cruiser. Suzuki Auto’s own vehicles, such as the Swift, Baleno and Fronx, are also gaining market share, with the new-generation Swift having dominated the passenger car market on numerous occasions in 2025.
