Record fuel prices push more South Africans to consider electric cars
South African fuel prices have officially breached the R30-per-litre threshold, forcing local motorists and commercial fleets to re-evaluate EV ownership.
The unprecedented surge in the price of petrol and diesel has placed electric vehicle (EV) ownership in the spotlight. With the continued increase in fuel prices – the latter hitting a record-high in October 2026 – South African consumers are seeking long-term financial relief now that a single litre of petrol and diesel costs over R30.
Official automotive industry data from naamsa has shown there is strong growth in local new-energy vehicle (NEV) sales. This includes battery-electric vehicles (BEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV), and traditional hybrids (HEV). Between January and April 2026, NEV sales have grown by 53% year-on-year, to 7 065 units. BEV sales experienced an even sharper surge over the same period, with an increase of 135%.
Volvo notes rising fuel prices are driving South African EV interest
Grant Locke, Managing Director of Volvo Car South Africa, says that escalating fuel prices are reshaping purchasing behaviour. Locke notes that South African motorists now look beyond initial purchase prices and are placing greater weight on total cost of ownership when considering EVs. They now factor in lower energy costs, lower routine maintenance, and overall operational expenses.
Locke observes a clear shift in consumer attitudes. While environmental sustainability remains an important consideration, daily operating efficiency and financial savings are now the primary motivators driving EV consideration. While record fuel prices push drivers toward alternative powertrains, Locke acknowledges that many are not yet ready to transition to pure electric models immediately.
Volvo South Africa currently offers six fully electric models positioned in the premium segment. The Swedish automaker’s EX30 starts at R735 500 for the base, Core variant. Step-up choices include the XC40 Recharge and EC40 coupé crossover – the former and latter priced from R1 108 000 and R1 396 800, respectively. The upcoming EX60 serves as the Gothenburg brand’s mid-range offering. The ES90 and EX90 sit at the top of the firm’s sedan and SUV ranges, respectively, and is priced from R1 590 000 and R1 855 000, respectively.
