OK. So by now it's pretty common knowledge, that many if not all Telkom ISP ADSL Subscribers were not capped at all during November. Somehow I don’t believe that it was simply an oversight on Telkom’s side since the fact even made news especially here on MyAdsl which is without doubt monitored by Telkom. So what exactly were the catastrophic results of not capping that Telkom has been warning us about for many months?

I know that the exchanges close to me did not explode, burn, melt or even fizzle a bit, can anyone report on an exchange that happened to maybe blow up just a little bit due to the immense load placed on the equipment inside it during November? Also as far as I know (and this is pure speculation) the SAT3 cable did not (and I was really afraid this might happen) melt! I am sure though that it is only because of all the water, aren’t we lucky that it’s in the ocean, the heat that was generated by the immense load on the cable must have reduced the oceans level by a few centimeters (it might explain the good rain we’ve been having), I’m pretty sure Telkom will quote that last line in a press release to state the dangers that uncapped bandwidth hold for the environment.

And finally my biggest fear did not happen either, the internet did not break, regardless of the immense load uncontrolled South-Africans whom were allowed unprecedented access to this very limited resource placed on the internet, it did not break, I did not even once get a Error 600 Internet not available message when trying to browse, download, audio stream or any other feature that the extremely fragile internet allows.

So Telkom please explain to me after all the fear you instilled in me, warning me about the extreme danger uncapped bandwidth will hold for us as a nation this continent and in fact the planet, why didn’t it all go wrong, why are people not running down the streets screaming in fear because the end of the world has arrived.

O and by the way, thanks for all the bandwidth in November, I really enjoyed it.

[do while Telkom + Internet = flugup]

Easy for you to say! There are millions of starving people all over the world that won't get any data now, thanks to your selfish behaviour.
:D

lol! Maybe we should have a 'save bandwidth' public holiday, since bandwidth is so scares, extremely expensive, and there is only a limited supply because the sat3 pipe might break if there is too much traffic going through it like 'onlyme' so nicely put it.

Are we *allowed* sarcasm in this forum :)? I think that Rikus and Steve might get annoyed and, gosh, then we will be in for it!

Nice post but the news also reached MyADSL on why people werent capped. They reallocated unused bandwidth so that higher end users could take advantage of it.

There was no oversight as this has been posted on the front page of Telkomsa.net's homepage under "TelkomInternet`s new DSL capping policy" for quite some time as well as being discussed in this forum.

Does it mean the Atlantic is a few degrees warmer from all that data flying along at 600gig a second?

LOL

National Bandwidth day.....
does that go with the Bandwidth tax they want to implement ?

....my next post will be 100 !!!

Isn't the SAT-3 a fibre cable ?
Don't think there can be much heat ?
Or am I wrong?

If there is ; then we are responsible for global warming, the melting of the polar ice caps and rising ocean levels.

Turn those modems off immediately !

Ja hey. Youse okes smaak to joke. But ive noticed that international sites is loading lank slow at the moment.

:p

heh. well a thing to also remember is that because it was reguarded as a slip up or error people using more on their telkom internet accounts are more likely doing so not cause they need to but simply cause they can. Its like depriving your self of ice cream and then getting a tub for free.. initially you gonna eat 1/2 the tub and then roll over feeling sick of ice cream.

It's fibre and the transmission is via part of the electromagnetic spectrum. As it's not totally lossless, some energy will be dissapated as the signal passes down the cable. This loss will apear as heat in the walls.

Hence the polar caps melting.

But then this is only a guess.:D
