OK. So by now it's pretty common knowledge, that many if not all Telkom ISP ADSL Subscribers were not capped at all during November. Somehow I don’t believe that it was simply an oversight on Telkom’s side since the fact even made news especially here on MyAdsl which is without doubt monitored by Telkom. So what exactly were the catastrophic results of not capping that Telkom has been warning us about for many months?
I know that the exchanges close to me did not explode, burn, melt or even fizzle a bit, can anyone report on an exchange that happened to maybe blow up just a little bit due to the immense load placed on the equipment inside it during November? Also as far as I know (and this is pure speculation) the SAT3 cable did not (and I was really afraid this might happen) melt! I am sure though that it is only because of all the water, aren’t we lucky that it’s in the ocean, the heat that was generated by the immense load on the cable must have reduced the oceans level by a few centimeters (it might explain the good rain we’ve been having), I’m pretty sure Telkom will quote that last line in a press release to state the dangers that uncapped bandwidth hold for the environment.
And finally my biggest fear did not happen either, the internet did not break, regardless of the immense load uncontrolled South-Africans whom were allowed unprecedented access to this very limited resource placed on the internet, it did not break, I did not even once get a Error 600 Internet not available message when trying to browse, download, audio stream or any other feature that the extremely fragile internet allows.
So Telkom please explain to me after all the fear you instilled in me, warning me about the extreme danger uncapped bandwidth will hold for us as a nation this continent and in fact the planet, why didn’t it all go wrong, why are people not running down the streets screaming in fear because the end of the world has arrived.
O and by the way, thanks for all the bandwidth in November, I really enjoyed it.
