they could do it to the moon set up bases and another lift back to earth.
 
My kid did a project on the space elevator 2 yrs ago for the Eskom Science expo. He nabbed a couple of medals too :)

Yeah, he's a talented kid; I remember that. Good genes I reckon. :)
 
Just think about the maths that would be need to calculate just about everything involved in building one. And then putting it all in place, for real. The LHC would be like a school science project in comparisation.
 
The whole project rests on the assumption that scientists will succeed in developing a technique to make the carbon nanotube strands longer than just a couple of millimetres. Currently the snippets they make is of no use.

Oh, and one other thing. If this thing's length is 1/4 the distance to the Moon, what about tidal effects (or do we just blow the Moon up to get it out of the way?)

How long do these strands need to be? and if they're a couple of mm then why don't they do an interlocking chain?
