So, I acquired these 4 spices and lady was a bit vague about their uses, i.e - is it for beans/mixed veg/meat/dal ?

I have googled and while I can kind of guess from the ingredients, it will be nice to know from someone here who has actually used these spices.

Rombo rossi/Rumbo rossi
Mother in law
Spicy madras
Bombay delight

@Polymathic - won't you ask mama and report please ? :p

I've only come across that first one by name recently

As for usage. They're all masalas. Use as you will

You are right but horses for courses.

Chai spice is also masala - you don't really make beans/mixed veg bunny chow just using chai spice.

They are all mixed masalas and various levels of heat with Mother In Law probably the hottest....

In any event there's actually nothing wrong with using chai masala as a masala if that's what's going to float your boat. I'd suggest adding some chilly powder though. For colour and heat

Yes - putting a tiny bit of chai spice is alright but can you please ask the person who puts food in front of you ? I swear I don't seem to know any charous who actually cook - all momma's boys.

Updated the first post with ingredients of all 4. Bombay delights seem to be also called mix masala as well but sometimes as per ingredients mother-in-law looks closer to mix masala as per some other sites.

Mother in Law is best used as a snuff to open nasal passages. Don't leave it too long, it loses potency over time.

It's just a bit of difference in the spices used and the quantities thereof. End of the day it's really six of one or half a dozen of the other and personal taste always plays a role as with all cooking

Rombo Rossi, is a very hot chilli powder, I definitely feel some heat with it but apart from the heat it actual chilli flavour is lacking, not a fan over all, I'm trying to remember it may have a slight smokiness to it.

Personally I'd steer towards the Madras and use more of it vs using the Mother-law and rombo Rossi.

End of the day it's all about preference.
