The squash thread

Mike has gone to Randburg so maybe your m8 is to be our no 2, can't remember the name that was mentioned but he is apparently a youngster.

We get stronger and stronger :)

Looking forward to watching 1st league for the first time in a long time.

p.s. i need to drop about the same just to play 5th league :p

League will be starting on 23rd Feb, i really encourage anyone slightly interested in squash to give it a bash. It ranges from quality pro squash to a social relaxed hit and hope type agenda!!!

Also the upcoming tournaments are the Secunda squash tournament on 28 feb and the first of the Grand Prix series at wits in march. The Grand prix series usually attracts the top players for A division, U can get to see some really good squash all weekend. There are multiple divisions from A -> D, where you can compete against ppl on the same level!

Anyone interested in any details with regards to leagues, tournaments, social games etc feel free to contact me.

For the record, PSC seems to have an amazingly strong first league, (prob 2 teams in fact) so QX6700.....should be interesting!!!

lol still do not know our full side, need to get hold of Digsy and find out. Is 1st league also starting on the 23rd ?

p.s. are they still having that crazy 2 month gap during winter ?

Indeed, there seems to be another long dumb break, which usually annoys me, but i am going to use the time to try do solo training (movement mostly), and hopefulyl get revenge on all the hidings i am going to receive in the first half.

lol i have decided not to play Gauteng league, will rather just play socials on a Tuesday and vets on a Thursday.

Have not lifted a racket for 3 months so need to get back into it starting tomorrow

Anyone manage to watch the SA nationals?

Jarvis is coming up and will be screened on tv/supersport as well! Will be good to see some local squash on tv for a change!!!

I'm looking for an open court to play on in Kempton Park area. I've been phoning Kempton Park Squash Centre but no joy, do squash courts close for the holidays? :(

Thread revival!!
Why? Because squash is damn awesome...
And with HD becoming more popular, it is easier to follow the game.

Seriously hoping this kind of quality footage makes the sport a little more accessible (and eventually an olympic sport!!!)
I have been out for sometime due to injury and work, but am now going to start training properly for next years league and grand prix tourneys......Would be nice to get some of these local games on TV!!

More revival!

Summer is on its way so no better way to start getting fit and healthy than running around on a squash court!
Most Virgin actives have a social evening which is a great way to find playing partners and get back into the sport!

As a side note, squash is being considered for the olympics again!
And our highest ranked SA player is Stephen Coppinger at 35 in the world!!

I know this thread is really old and it seems that previous revival efforts wasn't met with much optimism - which is a shame! But let's have another go...

I really want to get back into the game - is there anyone on the site playing squash in Centurion?

I actually think it would have done better if i had posted in the health and wealth section...

Sjeesh, just read the first page and saw what people up in Gauteng are paying for squash (5 years ago). Although the facilities aren't amazing down here, it's a damn sight cheaper.

Randburg squash in Blairgowrie is R90 a month to be a member and then R12 each/45min for lights. Even the beer is cheap!
They have 8 courts in total.

Anyone know of Squash courts in Mitchells Plain/Strandfontein or Southern Suburbs and fees for non members?

Last year after a discussion with a friend I imported a few racquetball stuff for myself and my work colleagues. We previously played squash a few times a week and thoroughly enjoyed it, yet, after the first racquetball (RB) game I (and my business partner) was hooked. Since then I have played only 2 games of squash as I find RB far more fun and enjoyable.

Now there is pro's and cons for both sports. I am not going to repeat it here. If you are really interested you can read this http://www.squashvic.com.au/customdata/index.cfm?fuseaction=CustomItem&ItemID=38794 and http://whitmanpioneer.com/sports/2009/12/01/squash/. All I can say, if you are very good with squash, and very fit, keep to squash. I do think it is more strategic, but only if you are an extremely good player. For the rest of us normal mortals racquetball is far, far better (again, MHO).

Playing it on a normal squash court (as there is very few real racquetball courts in South Africa) negates some of these arguments, as the court is smaller (and the game is really fast) as well as the tin (that eliminates low shots).

My problem, we used to play at the Menlyn Virgin Active but my business partner is on the verge of retiring and we just do not seem to have the time to play anymore. My other colleagues is almost never in the office or not really into any physical sport ... As a result I get on the court only a few times a month.

Anyone in Pretoria East area interested in learning a new sport and have time to play a few times a month let me know. I have extra rackets, you just need to gym at a Virgin Active in the Pretoria East area that have a squash court (Groenkloof and Menlyn I know, there are others).

If possible I do not want to pay to play at another court (as I already pay Virgin) and I do not want to drive to Johannesburg (both defeats the objective or reason for the post).

Any squash players in the Stellenbosch / Somerset West / Strand area?

Played provincial on school level, but just seeking a regular partner who can actually hit a decent backhand! haha

;)

Stellenbosch University is full of players, there're also courts at van der Stel sports grounds. Somerset West (Radloff Park) and Strand (Charles Morkel Stadium) both have active league players, I'm sure if you look on the ladders you'll be able to find yourself someone at a level you want to play. It's getting to the end of league as well so people won't have that taking up a night every week.

Hi Guys,

So im live in the Pretoria Area close to the Menlyn mall and normally play squash at the virgin active in Groenkloof or Menlyn virgin actives, but my partner is moving to Centurion. Does anyone know of people that would like to play, or where will i find a Partner. Is there some online site that can help or would i need to now join a club to get a partner ?

Please let me know if you can help or if you know anyone. Im a intermediate skilled player :-p
