Stellantis rumoured to build 4 new EV models in Italy

Four new electric models based on the STLA Medium platform are rumoured to be built at the Stellantis plant in Melfi, Italy, from 2024. Media reports have speculated about specific models, including an Opel.

Stellantis has not confirmed the information, but the plans seem concrete. The portal Automotive Newsrefers to requests for quotations to suppliers in its article. Before such a step, internal planning is often advanced but not yet finalised.

As Automotive News writes, these include the already confirmed electric successor to the Opel Insignia as well as a crossover from the DS brand, which could come onto the market as the DS 9 Crossback. In addition, there is the successor to the SUV DS 7 Crossback, which will be launched at the end of 2025, and a Lancia model that will probably bear the traditional model name Aurelia.

In the 1950s, the Aurelia was a Lancia model of the upper-middle class that was produced in three body variants – a saloon, coupé and convertible. Since Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares virtually eliminated all convertible models during his time as PSA boss, citing costs relative to potential markets, a sedan seems most likely for the electric Aurelia – but it could also become an SUV.

The Melfi plant was built by Fiat in the early 1990s and later passed to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles – since the merger of PSA and FCA, it has been part of the Stellantis production network. Currently, models such as the Jeep Renegade and the Fiat 500X are built there. The Renegade also comes off the production line there as a plug-in hybrid.

The SLTA Medium was introduced by Stellantis in the summer of 2021 as one of four new EV platforms. It is to cover the C and D segments. The batteries can hold between 87 and 104 kWh, which should enable ranges of up to 700 kilometres, according to WLTP. However, concrete technical data and dimensions of the four mentioned vehicles are unknown.

Zombie cars produced in 2016 appearing in Stellantis sales figures:

Chrysler 200 And Dodge Dart Among Stellantis Zombie Cars In Q1 2022

Another dead-but-alive model for the U.S.A. was the Fiat 500.

Another quarter is over, another batch of zombie cars stubbornly appears in Stellantis' sales chart. Indeed, the numbers are out and they show some vehicles simply refuse to die, making them the mainstream equivalent of a Pagani Zonda. There were no Jeep Patriots or Chrysler 300s in Q1 2022, but one person bought a Dodge Dart while another two purchased its equivalent from the Chrysler, the 200 compact sedan.

How old are these cars? Well, the final Dart produced in Illinois at the Belvidere Assembly Plant dates back to September 2016. The Chrysler 200 is nearly as old, having left the assembly line at the Sterling Heights factory in December 2016. We wouldn't necessarily rush over to buy a car that has been collecting dust for nearly six years, but maybe the juicy discount was worth the risk.

But wait, there's more. A deeper look into the numbers shows other dead-but-still-alive cars. We're specifically talking about Fiats as the 500 and 500L each racked up a sale during the first three months of the year. The cutesy city car and its minivan equivalent left the United States after the 2020 model year when the electric 500e also bid adieu to the US. The Italian Miata, Fiat's 124 Spider, was discontinued for 2021, and yet five people bought one in 2022.
A single Alfa Romeo 4C was sold in the same interval, but it's unclear whether it was a Coupe or a Spider. The former was axed in 2018 while the latter was retired in 2020. Speaking of sports cars, we are a bit disappointed the Dodge Viper hasn't generated any sales so far this year. However, it's a bit strange the model is still listed in the Q1 2022 sales chart where we're being reminded two were sold in the same quarter of last year. Another big "0" is next to the Chrysler Town & Country minivan.

Overall, the North American side of Stellantis sold a total of 405,221 cars in the first quarter of the year, representing a drop of 14%. All models were down compared to Q1 2021, save for the Jeep Compass (+22 percent) and the Grand Cherokee (+36 percent). Newcomers Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer racked up 7,055 and 3,169 sales, respectively.

What If Dodge Rebadged The Alfa Romeo Giulia For North America?

BY THANOS PAPPAS | POSTED ONJUNE 4, 2022 47
FacebookWhatsAppMessengerTwitterRedditPinterest

This story contains independent illustrations of an imaginary Dodge-branded Alfa Romeo Giulia created by Thanos Pappas for CarScoops that are neither related to nor endorsed by Dodge or Alfa Romeo.
The fact that the upcoming Dodge Hornet will be a rebadged version of the Alfa Romeo Tonale made us wonder what would happen if the two Stellantis brands took things further in terms of badge engineering. Thus, we envisioned Dodge’s version of the Alfa Romeo Giulia as an imaginary Italian-American marriage that never happened.

Platform sharing is so common in our world that automakers don’t even try to hide it. Still, most automotive groups and alliances have moved on from badge engineering, offering unique body panels for sibling models in order to comply with each brand’s design language. Those range from as much as the entire bodywork, to as little as the front fascia. Since the Dodge Hornet is closer to the second scenario, we decided to keep changes minimal for the sedan.

As you can see from the renderings, we kept most of the Giulia’s body panels and its lighting units intact. Naturally, changes are focused on the front end, with a redesigned bumper and bonnet inspired by the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye. The new grille connects the elongated headlights of the Giulia, effectively replacing Alfa Romeo’s iconic scudetto. The large bumper intakes and the pronounced splitter make up for a rather aggressive look, enhanced by a set of black stripes and the bulged bonnet with an integrated scoop.
The rest of the sculpted body remains stock, but a new set of black-painted SRT wheels and a refreshed color palette could infuse a little bit of US flavor into the Italian sedan. After all, Dodge is known for having a very talented color and trim department that kept the buyers interested in the aging Charger and Challenger. This would extend inside the cabin with SRT-branded sports seats and new upholstery options.
What Would You Name It?

If Stellantis was serious about putting Dodge emblems in an Alfa Romeo, they would surely need a new name. The Giulia measures 4,639 mm (182.6 inches) long, which would place it a segment below the 5,084 mm (200.2 inches) long Dodge Charger, and shorter than the discontinued 4,849 mm (190.9 inches) Dodge Avenger. This means it could bring back any Dodge or Plymouth nameplate back from the dead, following the rebadging strategy of its predecessor. A couple of options we liked were Plymouth’s Fury and Turismo names.
Regardless of the name, fitting powertrain choices for the Dodge sports sedan would come from the sporty Veloce and Quadrifoglio trims of the Giulia sibling. The former is fitted with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 276 hp (206 kW / 280 PS), while the latter gets a twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6 with a healthy 503 hp (375 kW / 510 PS). In order to avoid any internal competition, Dodge could go for the less powerful engine which makes fewer ponies than the base-spec V6-powered Charger. Still, the exceptional driving dynamics offered by Alfa Romeo’s Giorgio platform would make the new Dodge sedan a feast to drive.

And now we let our imagination free, we have to address the real issues. The Alfa Romeo Giulia has not been successful in terms of sales in the US market and while a Dodge twin could give it a sales boost, it would never turn out to be a best seller. Sedans are a slowly dying breed and Dodge buyers would probably find it hard to surpass the stereotype about Italian cars and their reliability.
The other elephant in the room is the model’s age. The Giulia was launched back in 2015, so it doesn’t really make any sense for Dodge to introduce a seven-year-old sedan with some makeup on. Still, we have to admit that our imaginary Dodge Fury / Turismo would feel quite young compared to the seventh-generation Charger that dates back to 2010, and the third generation Challenger that was introduced in 2008.
In conclusion, we are pretty aware that our renderings will remain fiction, and this is probably a good thing. Stellantis recently detailed four modular EV architectures that will be widely used by its entire brand portfolio, including Alfa Romeo and Dodge. Hopefully though, the upcoming models will have their own character, with unique design. After all, this is one of the main points of Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, who recently said he was confident there will be enough differentiation in future EVs despite using shared underpinnings.

Dodge Nero SRT Sits a Few CGI Steps Away From Rebadged Alfa Stelvio QV Reality

Today, there are many similarities between the newly minted sibling brands Alfa Romeo and Dodge. Both in the real world, courtesy of Stellantis, as well as across the virtual realm, through pixel master accomplishments.

For example, the premium Italian brand has just three models in its lineup: the older Giulia sedan and Stelvio crossover SUV, as well as the brand-new Tonale. Likewise, Dodge can only be proud of the Charger sedan, Challenger pony/muscle car, and the Durango family SUV. Recently, though, Stellantis has decided to break the balance and allow the American brand to grow a fourth nameplate: Hornet.

Interestingly, the latter will not be an evolution of the 2006 min-MPV concept car but rather a rebadged and reengineered version of Alfa’s fresh subcompact luxury crossover SUV (Tonale). Naturally, this cross-sharing has given everyone a lot of ideas. And, of course, automotive virtual artists have acted upon imagined impulses, adding even more Alfa DNA to hypothetical Dodge models.

Most of them dwelled around the idea of using the popularity of crossover SUVs, so the most obvious other victim for a quick rebadge was the Alfa Romeo Stelvio compact luxury and performance crossover SUV. So, Kleber Silva, the Brazil-based virtual artist known as KDesign AG on Behance, uses a lot of real-world Stellantis clues to envision yet another Dodge SUV. No surprise in that, since he is just coming off a CGI revival of the Dodge Dart that turned into a Jeep-based EV compact SUV for its second modern reimagining.

Anyway, because there are never enough crossovers and SUVs out there, the pixel master also envisions the Alfa Romeo Stelvio morphing into something called Dodge Nero SRT. Because the virtual crossover SUV looks ready to slap the Hellcat moniker on top of the engine hood as well, we can only imagine the author decided to piggyback on the great basics of Stelvio Quadrifoglio. Thus, the hypothetical Nero could also be called a V6 hero…
