Typing is faster than writing. And navigating with a finger is much faster and easier than with a stylus. There is a slight loss in precision but I don't mind.
 
Don't need a stylis with the N900 but they come with one nicely hidden away just incase you have really chubby fingers.
 
Been playing around with my Nokia 5230 for a while, and found that there are times when I need a stylus, other times I don't.

When doing handwriting, you do need a stylus.

The virtual keyboard's buttons are large enough, and it's sensitive enough so that you don't hit the wrong buttons when typing in a SMS with your fingers. (In contrast, the LG KS360 was very sensitive, and you tend to hit the wrong button more than once).

It also depends on the size of the screen, if it's a small screen, then you'll be better off by using a stylus. If the screen is large enough to allow you to use a virtual keyboard, then you don't need a stylus.

Just don't lose the stylus though... :p Great for that itch inside the ear :p
 
My 5800 has a stylus discretely hidden away. I type faster without it, but have found it handy for internet browsing. Sometimes the links are just so small that I struggle to choose a specific option without the stylus.

What browser are you using? I find that the zoom on operamini 10 is enough to leave me with very little room for error when I'm not using the stylus. Also depends on your screen size I guess. My 5800 was a pain when it came to scrolling with the stylus. If I scrolled up too high on the screen it would exit the browser. No issues with the N900 though.
 
Newer phones usually use capacitive screens which only respond when they come into contact with your skin. A special stylus can be made for them but hardly anyone seems to bother.
Since you don't need to apply pressure to the screen, you can be accurate by just touching it with the tip of your finger when you need the precision.
One positive with the capacitive screens is that they can be multi-touch. Which allows for cool stuff like pinch-to-zoom.

I have a Nokia 5800 with a stylus, and I keep the plectrum stylus that is attached with a strap as well. I hardly use it though, I've somehow learned to be super accurate with my thumb. I guess it comes with experience.

Opera mini, but I prefer small pages to scrolling. I've found the stylus/small page combination works very well for myself. I agree on the scrolling, but now I only use kinetic scrolling with my fingers. I've become adapt at using fingers in tandem with the stylus. :-)
