Obviously will be a competent car but not sure of that styling.

Following on from its launch in the Japanese domestic market in late 2016, Suzuki Motor Corporation now unveils the new European Swift at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show as its all-new global supermini. It carries forward the Swift DNA while adopting completely new styling and a performance-enhancing extremely light body with advanced safety technologies. The result is exterior European flair complemented by a sporty and functional interior, nimble and agile driving, and enhanced peace of mind.

In addition to its stylish exterior design in a compact size of just 3,840mm long, the new Swift features excellent visibility, a spacious cabin and ample luggage space. The development goal was to create an all new hatchback styling that is undoubtedly Suzuki. Swift is a very popular and important car in the range and has reached 5.4 million sales globally in less than 12 years, faster than any other Suzuki model.

Suzuki Swift makes Swiss debut

The 4th generation of the Suzuki Swift has been showcased at the Geneva Show, replete with new-look styling and a modernised interior.

The Swift is the most popular model on offer from Suzuki in South Africa and it has racked up over 5.3 million global sales since its launch way back in 2004. Suzuki is well-known for building reliable and affordable cars and the current Swift model delivers good ride and handling while returning reasonable fuel consumption figures. The Swift is so good, in fact, that it was a finalist in the Budget Car category in the inaugural Cars.co.za Consumer Awards two years ago, which in itself, is a testament to its abilities.

Key details

Although local specification is yet to be confirmed, the new Swift will be offered with 6 trim levels in its home country including RSt, Hybrid RS, RS, Hybrid ML, XL and XG. In addition to this, the new Swift will be offered with 3 transmission options including a 5-speed manual, 6-speed automatic and a CVT.

In terms of engines, Suzuki’s new turbocharged 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine will power the new Swift and a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre engine will also be offered. We sampled the 1.0-litre turbo engine in the new Suzuki Baleno at its international launch in Ireland and we were disappointed that it didn’t make it into the South African offering. In the case of the Swift, we’ll be surprised if it makes it to our shores. The current 1.2-litre offers 63 kW and 113 Nm of torque and there is no indication as yet if the figures will be bumped up in the new iteration.

The big news, however, is that the Swift Sport will be powered by a 1.4-litre turbopetrol engine, replacing the outgoing, naturally aspirated 1.6-litre mill. The 1.4-litre turbo unit will offer no less than 103 kW and 220 Nm of torque and Suzuki may even decide to tweak outputs to better serve the sporty nature of the Swift Sport.

The new Swift’s safety credentials have improved too. In the Japanese market, the Swift will be offered with a Safety Package that includes a Dual Sensor Brake Support (DSBS) collision-mitigating system, a first for Suzuki. The system incorporates a monocular camera, a laser sensor and high beam assist. The package also includes adaptive cruise control. It remains to be seen if any of these features will be offered in South Africa. The new Swift is based on a new "light and rigid" platform, known as HEARTECT, which should see improvements in overall performance and ride quality.

The date of the new Suzuki Swift's arrival in South Africa is yet to be confirmed, but we will keep you updated as local launch and specification details become available.

I actually think the styling is alright, but it's one of those cars where the wrong colour really makes it look a lot worse. I reckon it would look great in black.

2017 Suzuki Swift to take fight to benchmark Fiesta

The Geneva motor show played host to Suzuki’s latest unveiling; it’s larger and more practical than its predecessor

The new Suzuki Swift has made its public debut at the Geneva motor show, three months before sales of the Ford Fiesta rival kick-off in Britain.

Suzuki is hoping that a focus on core strengths, together with a reappraisal of some long-standing weaknesses, will carry the new third-generation supermini to a 40% sales volume improvement in the UK, which is already the car’s biggest single European market.

Switching to the same platform as the larger Baleno, the new Swift is marginally shorter than the car it replaces, with a slightly lower roofline but a longer wheelbase. Wider use of ultra-high-strength steels in its construction has contributed to a significant weight saving for the car, with entry-level 1.2-litre versions weighing less than 900kg: some 120kg less than their predecessors.

Cabin space is up by 25% and luggage storage space has grown from 200 to 254 litres. Access is also improved thanks to a body optimised for a five-door layout – the only format available with the new model – with rear door handles hidden ahead of the car’s C-pillars.

Suzuki chief engineer Masao Kobori told Autocar that chassis development on the Swift has been done extensively on UK roads as well as in Spain and Germany, and that the Ford Fiesta had been Suzuki’s key benchmark for the Swift’s handling.

“We believe we have matched the Fiesta’s handling, but the Swift does not have the same handling feel as the Ford because it is a much lighter car,” Kobori said. “We have expended every possible effort, in every area, to save weight, which also sharpens the car’s handling, and we have wider axle tracks, a lower driver’s hip point and a lower centre of gravity.”

The 2017 Swift comes in SZ3, SZ-T and SZ5 trim levels with two petrol and one petrol-hybrid drivetrain available. Both five-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions are offered.

SZ3 cars gets a Dualjet 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 89bhp and offers 65.7mpg while emitting 98g/km. Six airbags, air conditioning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, digital radio with Bluetooth and front electric speakers come as standard inside, and the exterior gets LED day running lights and 15in alloy wheels.

SZ-T models gain the option of a Boosterjet 1.0-litre three-pot with 109bhp on offer. CO2 emissions for the turbocharged unit are 104g/km and combined fuel economy is 61.1mpg. A rear view camera, 7in touchscreen with Mirrorlink, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, 16in alloys and fog lamps are added to this trim.

Top of the range is the SZ5, which gets an extra mild-hybrid powertrain option. Using the Boosterjet unit and an integrated starter motor, it can generate electricity through regenerative braking and trims CO2 emissions to 97g/km. Due to its compact nature, the hybrid system adds just 6.2kg to the powertrain’s weight. An optional all-wheel drive system called Allgrip can be fitted to SZ5 models with the 1.2-litre engine.

The Swift SZ5 also gets a 4.2in LCD display in place of dials. It comes with new driver assist technology including a forward detection system that uses a monocolour camera and laser sensor that can see in the dark. They first provide the driver with a visual and audio warning when an impact is likely, before triggering autonomous braking that can maximise brake pressure to avoid an impact. The technology offers lane departure warning and high beam assist, and an additional radar device enables adaptive cruise control.

Sales for the new Suzuki Swift start on 1 June. Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but expect a small increase on the outgoing model, which starts at £8,999. The car will be built at Suzuki’s Sagara plant in Japan.

It looks like Suzuki used the front of the Figo & back of Datsun Go to make the new Swift.

The new Swift has a nice interior but the exterior is fugly. They need to hire European designers.

They should steal ex Opel, Ford Europe or Seat employee.

Edit: I think Toyota will eventually buy Suzuki.
