The Syrian Conflict Thread

Its not an irrational bias, i've supplied you with the rationality.

Where? All you said is he is nothing more than anti-US propaganda unless I missed something? There was no evidence offered for him being anti-US, he ran for president, that by default makes him pro-US, he may be anti-warmongering etc, calling him anti-US seems irrational.

No i havent made anything special about this, thats all you. I used the barrel bomb example because we can be sure Turkey is launching those long distances.

And here lies my rationality behind Ron Paul, he admonishes the US for using these dirty weapons (rightfully so) but defends the Syrians.

Im not the US and i've never used barrel bombs, so me pointing out the use of them isn't hypocrisy. How about we condemn the use of dirty weapons no matter the side using them.

We all know why the term is even in the news, it is always in reference to that evil Assad. I had assumed your reference was a sarcastic one pointing out it is absurd to assume Turkey is shooting those from across the border, hence it must be Assad again. Was that a wrong assumption?

The hypocrisy comment was referring to US-hypocrisy not yours fwiw.

Lastly, I've not seen Ron Paul defend Syria's use of those weapons, he defends, or rather points out, they have a right to be defending themselves i.e. Syria's legitimate government is under threat, of course they will fight to remain in power.

The US, its allies and coalition however, again as Ron Paul has pointed out, have no business being in Syria at all, any sovereign state experiencing military interference on it's home ground will see it as an act of war, that is what it is. Syria just happens to be fighting on so many fronts it is unable to do much about the multiple invading forces.

Ok anti Washington, does that make you happy?
Well, it makes me happier. But I honestly feel his criticism of Washington, as you put it, is a result of him trying to hold Washington to the standards it claims to stand for. And his apologism for the behaviour of others is valid insofar the behaviour is a result of the excesses of the US Government's foreign policy SNAFUs.

So do the Syrians, of course. Everyone has a choice.
There's such a thing as acting under duress.

Turkish PM warns Russia by recalling Soviet invasion of Afghanistan

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has warned Russia over the possible consequences of its moves in neighboring Syria, suggesting they might be about to become mired in the country as the Soviet Union did in Afghanistan in 1979.

“Do not worry at all, the tyrants who turned Syria, my precious Aleppo and Bayırbucak into a lake of blood will one day definitely pay the price for what they have done,” Davutoğlu said on Feb. 9. “Nobody should forget how the Soviet forces, which were a mighty, super force during the Cold War and entered into Afghanistan, left Afghanistan in a servile situation. Those who have entered Syria today will also leave Syria in a servile way,” Davutoğlu said

What about Vietnam, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu?

Go try to ambush a Russian Jet now unable to defend itself and we'll see who is 'Servile'

you really need sort out that post (#2745)

Strange how Turkey's doesn't accuse Russia of invading their precious airspace now that Russia has fighter jets that can destroy theirs flying around in Syria so they left to shoot artillery rounds from Turkey's into Syria to defend their Turkish terrorists

A representative of Pope Francis in Aleppo welcomed Russia's military involvement in Syria, saying that the humanitarian situation in the country significantly improved due to Moscow's assistance, DWN wrote.

According to Bishop Georges Abou Khazen, the local population supports Russian military activities, as liberated parts of the city have finally received electricity and water.

"With Russia's support, the Syrian army went on the offensive and liberated parts of the city again have water and electricity. The schools are being reopened," the cleric said.

'Smoking Kills More People Than Obama' Poster to Be Removed in Moscow

A poster illegally placed at a bus stop in the Russian capital depicts US President Barack Obama smoking a cigarette.

The poster was apparently supposed to be a joke and had an inscription comparing the bad habit with the policies of US President Barack Obama.

The inscription on the poster reads: "Smoking kills more people than Obama, although he really kills a lot of people. Don't smoke. Don't be like Obama."

UN Says Russia Knows Who's Behind Syria Hospital Strikes

United Nations human rights spokesman Rupert Colville has said that the deadly air strikes on several hospitals and schools in northern Syria on Monday could constitute a war crime.

In a carefully phrased statement, Colville said that the Syrian and Russian governments “should know who is responsible” for the attacks, since they are active in the area in northern Syria where they were carried out, the Reuters news agency reported Tuesday.

He also echoed a statement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry, which earlier described the bombings of schools and hospitals in Idlib and Aleppo as an "obvious war crime."

"If it's deliberate, intentional targeting, then it may amount [to] a war crime. But at this point, we're not in a position to make that judgment,” said Colville.

Turkish officials have accused Russia of carrying out the strikes, a claim that was dismissed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday, аccording to the state-run TASS news agency.

Peskov cited Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad as blaming the attacks on the United States, the report said.

About 50 civilians died as a result of air strikes on Monday on at least five medical facilities and two schools in northern Syria, according to the UN.

Medical non-governmental organization Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said in a statement on Monday that the air strikes on one of its hospitals in the Idlib province had been “a deliberate attack” but it did not specify who was responsible for the strike.

At the time of attack, 25 staff members were in the hospital. Five have been confirmed dead, three have been recovered having sustained injuries and two remain missing, MSF reported Tuesday. Five patients and a caregiver were also killed, and the death toll is likely to rise as staff do not know the exact number of patients inside the structure at the time of attack, the report said.

The offensive came only days before a “cessation of hostilities” agreement is set to come into effect on Friday.

Syrian and Russian governments “should know who is responsible” for the attacks, since they are active in the area in northern Syria

By that flawless logic the US, Turkey and ISIS should know too, they're all active in the area, way to make an absolute nonsensical statement that is a badly disguised allegation Mr Colville ...

Barrel bombing a hospital is acting under duress? Please :erm: ... Shooting a home invader is acting under duress, subsequently shooting the paramedics who arrive on scene to help the home invader is not acting under duress.

Starting a shooting war is not an act of duress. Reacting when everyone around you starts shooting at you and at each other is an act of duress.

You don't seem to understand the use of the term, it doesn't mean you can freely do anything whilst under duress. Barrel bombing a hospital is not ok.

The current allegation is one of cluster bombs, not barrel bombs, the allegation also does not go as far as claiming any hospitals were targeted, merely that they were hit.

Its the same link i posted two days ago and started the subsequent discussion on barrel bombs.
I hear fish oil tablets are supposed to be good for ones memory :p
And if you remember, I was talking about Ron Paul. Ron Paul as an American patriot, who rightfully criticises his own government for its violent excesses, is in no way being hypocritical for not levelling the same degree of criticism on the Syrians or Russians or whoever else is currently fighting in Syria. Outside forces conspired to remove Assad from power and spent a lot of resources towards achieving that end. The Syrian regime as a result was put in a state of duress which is entirely unlike the United States' position in the military conflicts it generally busies itself with.

And given the deep level of involvement of the United States with respect to provoking Sunni rebellion within Syria and so forth, I think he makes a valid point and I'm glad he's speaking up for what's right.

The first Ron Paul quote that started this whole conversation was in reply to my quote regarding barrel bombing hospitals. The Ron Paul quote itself references the use of these barrel bombs. Im not sure what you're waffling on about and it seems you've jumped in without fully reading the conversation.
