The Syrian Conflict Thread

Yeah, poor me :)

If I ever apply to be a councillor or become a councilor, I would never stop saying it as it is. I wont compromise my core principles for position. If you have a look at a counselor's job description in the DA its 9 pages long. Its insane. I actually really feel for the councilors I am around. I know what is expected. Anyone doing that job for the money is crazy. There are way easier ways to make wealth. Also, for a person to complain, they have to file an affidavit. The idea of becoming a councilor just get you to send in a complaint actually sounds a little appealing :D I would LOVE an affidavit from you :D
Go check again. Also go read the Code of Conduct and try to act by it. I say try because I think it's beyond you, but we can always hope. The forums rules seem to elude you and they are arguably far simpler.

Must be that crap life of mine you were referring to earlier on :D I think I need to go grab my blankie, pull up into the foetal position and rock back and forth while quietly sobbing about how terrible my life is. Perhaps that will help me not to be outluded so much. :D

Now there's the DA councillor attitude coming out. You're almost there.

Maybe I'm just being slow, but where's the insulting or denigrating reference to race? I don't see one in the quote you posted .

He is basically calling him an idiot because of his so-called Serbian roots.
That's what he is saying.

What on earth are you on about? I dont insult or denigrate any racial, national or genetic group. lol.

You profiled someone based on their nationality which is linked to ethnicity. Don't dig the hole deeper. Rather apologise.

It's prejudicial.

I think you should press this. I don't always agree with you but pulling out peoples' nationalities is not on.

I read it as he is an idiot who is sympathetic to Russia because of Serbian roots, the fact he is an idiot isn't because he is Serbian.

Russia’s Big Guns Reach Syria’s Front Lines

The Russian army is literally bringing its big guns to the war in Syria. U.S. military analysts said the decision to add artillery to the battlefield indicates a number of key developments, including the Kremlin’s growing influence in planning and executing Syrian military operations.

It could be a sign that Russia is dedicated to a conventional ground war—not just air strikes—in support of Syrian leader Bashar Al Assad, a staunch ally long supported by Moscow.

Since at least October, Russia fielded heavy artillery units near the cities of Homs and Hama, pounding targets there, according to a top U.S. State Department official. However, most of Russia’s firepower was at Latakia air base in western Syria until recently.

The Russian decision to move artillery to the front lines is a newer development. Officially, Moscow denies that it has ground forces engaged in military operations in Syria.

There’s certainly Russian influence within the Syrian army . . . and lots of guns.

Gen. Ali Ayoub, the Syrian army’s chief of staff, made a brief televised statement last month declaring the launch of a broad ground offensive that would be coordinated with Russia’s air campaign. He said the attack would include newly formed ground units including a “4th Assault Corps.”

In an article in OE Watch, a magazine published by the U.S. Army’s Foreign Military Studies Office, analysts noted that pro-Assad media quickly hailed the new strategy.

The article quoted the pro-Hezbollah Al Hadath News. “The (Syrian) forward forces are supported by mortar cover and artillery regiments behind the support lines, as well as aerial cover from the Russian Sukhois,” Al Hadathstated.

“The Syrian army surge is proof of a new tactical military model, spiced with Russian flavors and led by the Sukhois from above, and which also includes greater use of artillery batteries,” the article continued.

According to OE Watch, there is conflicting information about the composition and manpower the 4th Assault Corps. But its formation could herald a new direction for the Syrian military and its battle against anti-Assad rebels, including a shift toward reliance on conventional forces and artillery.

Russian military doctrine places far more emphasis on artillery than Western armies. In Ukraine, both Kiev and Kremlin-backed separatists make liberal use of artillery owing in part to their shared Soviet lineage.

Before the war in Syria, Assad’s howitzer arsenal was universally Soviet and Russian in origin. The Syrian army could depend on thousands of static and self-propelled guns. Since the conflict, Moscow has further beefed up Assad’s artillery with more advanced 152-millimeter MTSA-B guns, BM-27 Uragan and BM-30 Smerch rocket launchers.

“Due to the Syrian army’s strong reliance upon artillery, it is unsurprisingly that providing artillery assets is one way that Russia is attempting to bolster the Assad regime,” OE Watch noted. “Perhaps what is surprising is the types of artillery systems that are being provided.”

The deadliest of all may be the TOS-1A Solnitsa rocket launcher, which was spotted on video launching its warheads in Latakia. Mounted on a T-72 tank chassis, the TOS-1A can fire 30 220-millimeter thermobaric or incendiary rockets in a single salvo.

Killed after posing for pictures, the five-year-old victim of Russia's airstrikes on Syria

Survivors, doctors treating the injured, and local commanders believe the Sukhoi jets, flying from a new airbase in the coastal Latakia province, are hitting homes in a deliberate campaign to break fighters’ morale and depopulate swathes of the countryside.

“They are targeting the civilians at night, and mostly frontlines during the day,” says Abu Hussain, a Turkmen rebel commander, a high-rank defector from the Syrian army. “It’s because they don’t want anyone to film the jets bombing at night, so you can’t prove their identity.”

That matches images and accounts of the airstrike on Raghat’s house, which her brother says began moments after 9pm on 1 October. In one of her last photos, she holds a lit torch, and video he says was shot soon after the bombing shows flames raging through the house against a dark sky.

Russian airstrikes killed at least 295 Syrian civilians in October alone, according to monitoring group Airwars, which keeps an extensive database of images, videos, reports and biographies of the dead.

“Based on all field reporting, the number of alleged civilian casualties attributed to Russia is many times what we see being claimed against the US-led coalition,” says Chris Woods, who runs the Airwars project.

“We think the primary reason here that the casualties are so high is the type of munitions that Russia is using, mostly ‘dumb bombs’ which almost always mean more civilian deaths. That is closely followed by where and how Russia is bombing. There is no doubt that Russia is bombing civilian neighbourhoods.”

Their assessment of the strike on Habeet matched Raghat’s family’s account, and ties in with Russian reports of bombing raids in the area, they say. A Syrian monitoring group also confirmed details of the attack, and a prominent human rights activist still working inside Syria videotaped the aftermath and photographed the little girl’s body.

Who's Serbian?

I see Germany doesn't want to cooperate with Russia on where their aircraft are operating.

Who's Serbian?

it was regards the spat between yourself and ghoti yesterday.
the referral by dave and space_chief implies that you are serbian and given you are serbian, ghoti's comment was meant as a slur against you as a result of your your serbian nationality (and you should take it further).

my instinct is that you are not serbian at all and there is much straw clutching going on

Oi, don't drag me into it, I'm not referring to anyone, I just posted my interpretation of the comment in that post, I don't know who it was aimed at.

I don't think AntiPropaGanda is Serb either, I think maybe he's just a communist sympathiser, maybe a SACP member from his student days so a little brainwashed that everything Russian is good and everything American is bad.

Thanks to generous funding from the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, we employ a part-time specialist in Iraq to monitor aspects of the air campaign there. We also employ a part-time Syrian analyst based in the UK.

So a guy in the UK is reporting which bombs are dropped by a particular nation, identifying jets flying at 6000m?!?
