The Syrian Conflict Thread

why would you use chemicals when you know it will cause you grief and while you have a huge arsenal behind you? you use chemicals when you are desperate and will take what you can get surely?

so like, an autopsy on three bodies turkey smuggled out the country somehow explains assad did it. what?

Obama's indifference to chemical warfare led to the trail of violence that reached as far as Europe

In an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic magazine earlier this year, President Obama said he was “very proud” of the moment in 2013 when, against the “overwhelming weight of conventional wisdom”, he decided not to honour his own “red line”, allowing Assad to escape accountability for a chemical attack that had killed more than 1,400 civilians.

Obama may be alone in this judgment. A year earlier, seemingly on a whim, he had set a red line on the use of chemical weapons at a time when none were being used. The red line was, in effect, a green light to conventional killing. But the regime called Obama’s bluff – and, predictably, he backed down. No longer fearing punishment, the regime escalated its tactics.

Nearly four times as many people were killed in the two years after the chemical attack as had died in the two years before. Obama’s abandonment discredited Syria’s nationalist opposition and empowered the Islamists. It helped Isis emerge from the shadows to establish itself as a major force. Together, these developments triggered a mass exodus that would displace over half the country’s population. And as the overflow from this deluge started trickling into Europe, it sparked a xenophobic backlash that has empowered the far right across the west.

These, however, weren’t the only consequences of Obama’s retreat. The inaction also created a vacuum that was filled by Iran and Russia. Emboldened by his unopposed advances into Ukraine and Syria, Putin has been probing weaknesses in the west’s military and political resolve – from provocative flights by Bear bombers along the Cornwall coast to direct interference in the US elections.

Oh good, Turkey says so, it must be the truth at last ... on a more serious note, how does an autopsy prove Assad's involvement?

Assas has threatened to do it, he is carrying an assault in that province, he has done it countless times before, he has chemical weapons and only Russian and Syrian aviations are active in this area.

For the peace talks mentioned earlier, here's Assad's statement:

"DAMASCUS - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said there is no "option except victory" in the country's civil war in an interview published on Thursday, saying the government could not reach "results" with opposition groups that attended recent peace talks."

Well that is a shįtload of baseless claims all at once.
They disposed of his chemical weapons in 2013 already.
Seeing that Assad has done it countless times before lets see some proper proof of 1 or 2 of those times.

I don't think we should discount the possibility of a rogue army bloke in the Syrian army being responsible either.

I will let you read this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destruction_of_Syria's_chemical_weapons

http://www.lefigaro.fr/internationa...-en-syrie-histoire-d-un-massacre-de-masse.php

11 chemical attacks, of which 10 attributed to Assad.

Chlorine is readily available (for the chemical industry) and chemical weapons are very easy to hide.

"Syria never signed the Chemical Weapons Convention, the current international treaty against the use of poison gas, but it did sign the 1925 Geneva Protocol, which banned the use of chemical and bacteriological warfare, according to the international Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW.)"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Use_of_chemical_weapons_in_the_Syrian_civil_war

Also, 90% of the attacks or more are carried against enemies of the Syrian Army, half of the ones reported by the Syrian are not evidenced, and if you go further in the reports, the ones used against the Kurds, the rebels, Aleppo... match the government stockpiles. What a coincidence, must be the UN, the OPCW must be biased.

And a proof that Assad has always been lying:
n 2015 the OPCW-UN Joint Mission in Syria disclosed previously undeclared traces of sarin and VX precursor compounds in a military research site where use of those compounds had not been previously declared.

But yeah, Assad is an angel, he would never have done that, he threatens just for fun. The modus operandi is the same than the ones before.

PS: Opinion of the former commander of the British CBRN regiment on the Russian explanation:

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Hamish de Bretton Gordon, director of Doctors Under Fire and former commanding officer of the UK Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Regiment, said this claim was “completely untrue”.

“No I think this [claim] is pretty fanciful, no doubt the Russians trying to protect their allies,” he said. “Axiomatically, if you blow up sarin, you destroy it.

“It’s very clear it’s a sarin attack,” he added. “The view that it’s an al-Qaida or rebel stockpile of sarin that’s been blown up in an explosion, I think is completely unsustainable and completely untrue.”

And if you bomb the area and merely damage the containers? Where does that Sarin gas go?

It could be any number of possibilities, official government, rogue Air Force unilateral action, IS, other rebel group...

It's amazing how so many people are convinced of the cause because of "evidence" yet the "evidence" seems to be solely the opinions of people.

I'm pretty sure Russia and Syria can give satellite/aerial evidence of the weapons depot then ? Including of the bombing.

IS, other rebel group...

I fail to see how it could be either of these two groups, Russia would say so if it was. Some facts we have that are undeniable.

A gas of some sorts was let off.
Aircraft were involved.
IS or other rebel groups have no aircraft.

So the bodies weren't smuggled.

Idlib province is near Turkey, 32 victims were admitted in Turkish hospitals where they subsequently died.

Syria chemical attack death toll rises
Turkey - Autopsy results have revealed that chemical weapons were used in an attack which killed more than 80 people in Syria's Idlib province, according to Turkey's justice minister.

Thirty-two victims of Tuesday's attack were brought to Turkey where three subsequently died.

"Autopsies were carried out on three of the bodies after they were brought from Idlib.

Can't read the entire article as it is for suscribers but the head of Syria Relief & Development for Idleb province says that nothing seems to stop Assad's regime:

"It's been 10 weeks we're subjected to chemical attacks in this area, with a general indifference. First there were barrel bombs loaded with chlorine, we know how to treat these. Cortison and oxygene are usually enough to save the patient, it's more delicate for children but if they are treated in time, survival odds are good"

The US ? :crylaugh:
It's an area where only Russian and Syrian armies fly. US planes would have been detected and seen...
US, Turkey, France, Britain and if you want to get a bit more clandestine: Saudi Arabia or even Israel
All nations that have the ability to strike anywhere in Syria at any point in time, hell most of them have already flown missions in the current Syria conflict.

fyi there is no area where only the Syrians and Russians fly, the US broke off communications with Syria/Turkey/Russia joint operations and have stopped communicating troop deployments entirely, nobody knows where they are, at least not officially

granted, you are right that the Russians would be saying so if they spotted someone else

Well, you'll have to take testimonies of somebody, because everybody on the ground is biased, pro or against Assad...
We can agree that everyone's biased at least. Not sure I'm prepared to take anyone's testimony quite yet, would be great if they actually share some evidence instead of just their conclusions.

France, US and UK don't fly in this area.

France actually flies from Jordan (very South) to ISIS positions (South and East), we speak of the North-West here.

I doubt the Russians wouldn't have spotted somebody else...

They have gathered shells of the bombs, sent for analysis.
