The Syrian Conflict Thread

This is what the Trump administration is willing to go to war over. The same administration that said it wouldn't go to war just a few months ago.

I'd still like to know if someone in the military made such a moronic statement or whether the reporter concerned just made it up.

You do realise radar can't see flashes of light, nor can it monitor sound? Radar is radio waves bounced back off solid items...

What a load of scheisse!

The radar saw the bombs drop and "picked up the flashes and booms" :crylaugh::crylaugh:

Were they on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise?

Radar that can pick up flashes of light and sounds!

:crylaugh::crylaugh::crylaugh:

Actually radars can pick up explosions. For the flashes and booms, not so sure, but an explosion definitely.

I have no idea if it's accurate enough to make the difference between traditional and chemical weapons though. As a gut feeling, I'd say it can measure roughly the intensity of an explosion but that would be it.

Radar doesn't have an IR capability, but I'll go have a read.

Article says:

US military and intelligence officials told CNN that Syrian planes dropped bombs at the time and place that the chemical attack was reported to have happened. A US official said radar intelligence followed the radar track of regime airplanes and the infrared heat signature of the bombs.

So airplanes were seen on radar and bombs dropped? I thought that was already common knowledge?

Nutshell, an idiot reporter writing crap?

I think its meant as two separate devices tracking the area.

Nutshell, an idiot reporter writing crap?

Probably some reporters not quite understanding how it all works and not quite portraying it back in the proper terms.

IR would presumably mean they have satellite imagery.

Tillerson: “No role” for Assad to govern Syria, “steps are underway” to organise an international coalition to remove him

This coming mere days after he said political reality means he'll be staying.

Almost like Trump's administration has no idea what it's doing and Tillerson doesn't quite understand his job.

What do you know, the Russians are full of schit.

The Guardian, the first western media organisation to visit the site of the attack, examined a warehouse and silos directly next to where the missile had landed, and found nothing but an abandoned space covered in dust and half-destroyed silos reeking of leftover grain and animal manure.

Residents said the silos had been damaged in air raids six months ago, and had stood unused since then.

“You can look at it ; there’s nothing there except maybe some grain and animal dung, and there’s even a dead goat there that suffocated in the attack,” one person said. Residents responded in disbelief to the Russian allegation.

There was no evidence of any building being hit in recent days or weeks near where so many people were killed and wounded by a nerve agent. The homes across the street appeared undamaged from the outside. There was no contamination zone near any building. Instead, the contamination area radiated from a hole in a road.

Worse that I thought. Butcher al Assad...

Don't worry, we'll have an apologist along shortly to whine about MSM, claiming it's a false flag/hoax/turrirstss! etc. The twitter trolls and Russian botnets are already doing it. Russia is claiming MH17 was shot down in a false flag, too, so wouldn't be surprised if they pivot to this line. :crylaugh:

*edit*

Oh wait, I see Ron Paul has already claimed it's a false flag and that there's "zero chance" Assad is responsible. :crylaugh:

Trump Weighs His Military Options in Syria

Summary
U.S. President Donald Trump is considering military options in retaliation for the April 4 chemical weapons attack in Syria, as Defense Secretary James Mattis draws up a list of options, according to media reports. Trump has not yet made up his mind to launch military action according to the same reports, but retaliation is increasingly plausible.

The list of options to be presented to Trump will vary considerably in scope, intensity and risk, depending heavily on the objective of the White House. These fall broadly under two categories: a punitive strike to deter further action, and a significant attempt to degrade the Syrian chemical weapons arsenal and its delivery methods.

Teen lost 19 family members in Syria chemical attack: 'I saw the explosion'

Mazin Yusif, 13, sauntered around the hospital with the confidence of a regular, taking us from room to room, introducing the people in each ward.

He arrived here at the Reyhanli State Hospital 24 hours ago, one of around 30 Syrians rushed to this southern Turkish town near the Syrian border after what appears to have been a chemical attack by Syrian warplanes on rebel-held Khan Shaikhoun in Idlib province.

Mazin wore new clothing, crisp blue jeans and a red, white and blue jacket -- he'd lost his own in the attack. His eyes were bloodshot, his voice was hoarse.

He first introduced his grandmother, 55-year-old Aisha Al-Tilawi, who lay on a bed with an oxygen mask on her mouth, her chest rising and falling quickly.

He then listed his relatives who were killed in Tuesday's attack: Yasir, his newly married cousin; another cousin, Ahmed, and his wife and their twin boys. And on and on. Tears welled up in his eyes, but he carried on talking.
In all, he said, 19 of his relatives were killed Tuesday morning.

https://theintercept.com/2017/04/06...an-government-in-response-to-chemical-attack/

The Pentagon has developed plans for an airstrike against Syrian government targets in response to this week’s apparent chemical attack by Syrian government forces, according to two U.S. military officials.

The proposed strike would involve launching Tomahawk cruise missiles to overwhelm Russian air defense systems used by the Syrian military. The Russian government currently helps maintain the air defense sites and advises the Syrian military.

According to both U.S. military officials, the current proposal would likely result in Russian military deaths and mark a drastic escalation of U.S. force in Syria.

One U.S. military official said the decision to allow the strikes, which would kill Russians, signals a significant change in policy by the Trump administration. A decision by Trump to go forward with the plan would be a reversal from the Obama administration, which denied multiple air strike proposals that would likely cause Russian personnel casualties in Syria.

This has the potential to get really ugly. Let's hope President Dumbo doesn't go full retard.

Useful caution:

I do not suggest here that it is obvious what the right thing to do is. But military action should only ever be taken with a clear goal and a serious weighing of the probable and conceivable repercussions. As I wrote yesterday, I think the administration's volte-face on Syria is not only tied to the attack itself but what appears to be a major rolling shake-up at the White House (one that I suspect has only begun). Still, as we know, Donald Trump is the ultimate TV President. It sounds like hyperbole but it's not hyperbole to say that many or most of his key actions are driven not by the counsel of key advisors or intelligence briefings but by things he sees on TV. Often things idiots say on TV. That makes these horrific pictures perhaps more influential than they might be with another President.

The emotional bs is amazing. After 10 min on the guardian I have given up, their bias is just to strong for me.
Dead children certainly proofs that Assad did it because if anyone else were responsible obviously the results would have been different. They would have spared the poor children.
