When I enter my number on the Telkom ADSL checker it shows that I have a 2Mbps connection, although only 1Mbps is available in our area. My modem is connected at 1Mbps. With all the upgrades happening I am hoping that 2Mbps will eventually be available.

What do you make of this?

Ask Telkom to resync your line. If you phone then mention NOTHING else, just a resync. Don't even mention that you expect a 2Mbps, just ask for a resync.

TelkomZA on Twitter was very helpful and I believe they have an account on here and Facebook as well. They're way more clued up than the standard call center guys.

Thanks Bar0n, I will try that.

After they've done that, power off (unplug) your router for a minute or so and then try again. Your router should now be syncing at 2Mbps.

BarOn why not mention you expecting an upgrade?
Last week I phoned and asked and the guy said I asked when I could expect my upgrade, he checked and said my exchange had been upgraded and then he re-synced the line and hello 4mbps.

Mine shows the same thing. I am sure it is the upgrades promised by Telkom although I thought they were only going to be implemented in January 2014 for the 1Mb customers.

Anyone know when the MWEB new packages come into effect for the upgrades?

Thanks Bar0n, I will try that.

Please report back after you have done a speed check as I have a similar situation. Mine show max speed available in my area as 4Mbps and my current speed as 10Mbps.

I will have to wait until after work, but will let you know!

Because if you get to a customer service representative with a negative IQ they might misunderstand you and then they'll upgrade your line, not resync it. In other words, you'll get a 2Mbps account which is due for a 4Mbps upgrade soon, but you'll pay more.

It's already rolled out, you only need to ask for a resync. I went through exactly the same issue as the OP.

I'll have to try again tomorrow, the call centre is not answering and I have been on hold for more than 30 minutes already (the Telkom website says they should be open until 20:00). Their hold music is mind-numbing.

I did contact TelkomZA as well, but I think they are too busy to handle all the queries they get...

OK, just as I posted the message above, someone answered. I had to turn my modem off while they refreshed the line. Took a couple of minutes and they then told me to switch it on again. Unfortunately I am still on 1Mbps.

Using the myBroadband speed test:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 855 kbps (106.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 426 kbps (53.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 28 ms

It's because an exchange becomes congested. They limit the speeds for new lines.

Tell them that your modem is only syncing at 1mbps when it should be at 2mbps(or whatever your line speed is) and then they tel you to off and on it and then it should have synced at the higher speed

Thats what I did

Thanks to TelkomZa I am sorted and now on 2Mbps :)

Last Result:
Download Speed: 1767 kbps (220.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 424 kbps (53 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 23 ms

I've tried that and it also says my line is 2Mbps, yet when they resynced it and I restarted my router it still said I'm on 1Mbps...
So what did I do wrong?
