Well the telkom guy came today,,on time, used my phone to phone whoever made no adjustments to anything told me its all done in the exchange and seeing as though Im not signing a contract, I will need to get my own phone filter which if Im lucky will come with the modem I choose.
I was planning on a netgear which I told him and got the following reaction
They have been called out many times for prospective problems which have not been line related but rather netgear modem problems and be warned if thats the case I will be charged a crazy amount for call out. I didnt ask him about other modem makes but asked what he recomended and he couldnt give me an answer. He ran a test on his laptop (192) on the telkom bandwith website and got a figure of 270kpbs told me I was very lucky because im close to the exchange, I propmptly went to the Axxess website and ran a bandwidth test and got 206bpbs told him he was crooked but thanks for being on time. He said " hey i only work here"

What are the fundamentals in choosing a dsl modem please? My Axxess account starts end of the month

You need just a modem if you already have a router, otherwise you will rather need a modem/router so you can connect multiple PCs and setup some firewall ... I will suggest Linksys, they are very good, although I don't have one. I use D-link DSL-300T which is very cheap (R450) and seems to work well after you get the settings right, which is not difficult if you phone D-link support but reading the manual is useless. Unfortunatelly I have not seen Linksys standalone ADSL modems so if you need just a modem you may not be able to find Linksys.

Well AIT I would not go with the bandwidth test at Axxess because IMO it is not accurate. When doing a local speed test the results is higher as when I do the international test. Also my download speeds prove this tests totally wrong.
Maybe they should find an alternative.
