In one of the earlier episodes when they first venture away from the ships, two guys are seen wandering off to the horizon ( I think it's before the first attack ) - what happened to them ?

Then one of the guys reports he saw the woman talking to the creature, but when she is asked she said she hadn't spoken to it.
If she was talking to it then it would seem she had some control over it otherwise she would have been eaten, or does it not eat the locals ?
