I had a test drive of the Nio ES8 last week.

Quite impressed. Not quite impressed enough to put the money down, as the first cars have teething trouble, but definitely getting an electric for my next car.

And this is despite Apple being much much better at production and distribution than Tesla.

Really? I would have thought that BYD were by far the largest.
They sold more electric cars than anyone else in 2017, 2016, 2015...

Considering Apple don’t sell any cheap budget phones your comment is pretty stupid, numbers sold will always favour the seller with lots of budget and midrange models.

What’s that comparison like in terms of revenue from smartphone sales?

Apple don't care, well sort of, they still take a large chunk of the revenue in the segment they compete in. Not that they'd not mind if Samsung and Huawei dropped dead and left more of the market to them alone. Those other makers do keep Apple honest. In the Tesla example it's a bit different as it looks like it's still a bit hard to turn a profit. The person who can mass sell will win the electric car race. Makes you wonder why the leading German makers making money don't enter the space in earnest

And yet the parts and servicing on Tesla is not "open source". A Tesla is just about top of my list of want cars. The S is a thing of beauty for me. But I am not sure I ageree on all Elon's ideas.

Loving the Golf GTE I'm driving, so the logical next step would be full electric.
