The Tesla Model Y Thread

The latest suspicious incident occurred overnight in Dedham, Massachusetts, where three Teslas were vandalized, according to the Dedham Police Department. Officials said "words had been spray-painted" on two Tesla Cyber-trucks, with all four tires of the trucks and a Tesla Model S being "reportedly damaged."

SEATTLE — Four Tesla Cybertrucks were damaged or destroyed in a fire at a lot in Seattle's SoDo neighborhood late Sunday night, raising questions about possible arson and the motive behind it.

The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) has not yet said whether foul play was suspected as the cause of the fire, which is under investigation. Seattle police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are also investigating the fire.

Photos and video from a Seattle Department of Transportation traffic camera shows the moment the trucks went up in flames shortly after 11 p.m.

"That’s when I saw some flickering, we came a little closer and I got maybe halfway here from where I was at and boom, big explosion, tall flames," Jay Fleming, who was out walking his dog when he saw the fire, said. "One of these trucks just lit up by itself, so I called it in."

Things are ramping up a bit…

Tesla vehicles, dealerships and charging stations have been vandalized, suffered arson attacks and faced protests since the company's CEO Elon Musk began his work with the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, leading to mass layoffs of federal workers, authorities said.

The latest suspicious incident occurred overnight in Tigard, Oregon, where "more than a dozen" shots were fired at a Tesla dealership, according to Kelsey Anderson, the public information officer at the Tigard Police Department.

Tesla allegedly developing a cheaper Model Y for China

While Tesla's revamped Model Y (codenamed Juniper) has been quite successful in China since its introduction in January, the company is allegedly ready to placate the increasing number of competitors this car has with a slight variation.

It would be a cheaper Model Y, according to a new report, and it seems like it could be exclusive to the Chinese market. The cheaper model wouldn't have "much change" in battery, power, and chassis, whatever that means, but would cut costs elsewhere.

It's unclear what exactly the cost-cutting would entail, but presumably interior materials could be changed, similarly to what happened with a cheaper Model 3 introduced in Mexico in August of last year.

The cheaper Model Y apparently isn't sure to launch - Tesla's Chinese team has developed it, but the actual release depends on how well the normal Model Y continues to perform, sales-wise. So if sales go well, the cheaper option will stay shelved. If the normal Model Y's sales drop significantly, then Tesla China will use the cheaper option as a way to bring people back.

Oops, Elongated Muskrat might be regretting placing his European factory in Germany.

A survey of over 100,000 Germans revealed that 94% won’t buy a Tesla vehicle. It doesn’t bode well for the automaker, whose sales had already been falling off a cliff in the important European market.

In 2024, Tesla saw a 41% reduction in sales in Germany compared to 2023 despite EV sales surging 27% during the year.

This has already raised red flags about Tesla’s future in Germany, but it is nothing compared to Tesla’s performance so far in 2025.

Tesla’s sales were down 70% in the first two months of 2025, and again, that’s compared to its already poor performance in 2024.

There are many factors at play, including increased EV competition and the Model Y changeover, but in recent months, industry experts have attributed Tesla’s decline in the country to Germans being upset with Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s meddling in local elections and promoting the far-right AfD party.

Musk is currently under probe in Europe for his political meddling, and his reputation has crashed in Germany after a couple of Seig Heil salutes at Trump’s inauguration and several questionable posts promoting fascist and Nazi ideologies, like this one yesterday:

Tesla offers 0% financing on Model Y in China amidst slowing demand

Tesla has begun offering 0% interest loans on its Model Y in China, pointing to a potential slowdown in demand for the popular electric SUV. Tesla faces increasing competition in the world's largest electric vehicle market. The company is now providing zero-interest loans for up to three years on the base Model Y rear-wheel drive (RWD) model, with a 30% down payment.

The decision to offer these incentives follows a period of perceived high demand after the launch of the refreshed Model Y. However, current delivery timelines suggest that the initial surge may have subsided. Tesla now quotes a 2-4 week delivery window for the Model Y RWD, while the Long Range all-wheel drive (AWD) model has a 6-10 week wait. This difference in delivery times indicates stronger demand for the Long Range version, which recently saw a price increase of RMB 10,000 (€1,240).

Tesla's new financing offer is valid for purchases made between March 18 and April 30, 2025, with vehicle pickup required before the order expiration date. The 0% interest loan applies specifically to the Model Y RWD - Tesla's best-selling model in China. The company also offers discounted loan rates for smaller down payments.

Tesla's financing incentives are seen as a sign that Tesla is working to maintain sales momentum in the face of stiff competition. Recently, the Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan surpassed the Tesla Model 3 in sales in China. The SU7 boasts a 31-34 week order backlog, significantly longer than Tesla's 1-3 week wait.

I saw an actual swasticar yesterday, couldn’t get a photo as it was driving towards me on the opposite side of the road.

Small swastika sticker was stuck on above the number plate, presumably the owner/driver hadn’t noticed it.

A bit like this:

The Musk Appreciation Society is still gathering pace.

In a statement the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said: “The damage is believed to have occurred at some point in the last 24 hours.

“Approximately 20 vehicles have been targeted. Most have had their wing mirrors knocked off, while others have also had windows smashed or received dents to the bodywork.

Tesla sales in Europe drop 45% as facelifted Model Y introduced

American electric car manufacturer records its lowest February share of the market in five years

Tesla sales in Europe fell by nearly 45% last month, leading the firm to its lowest February market share in five years (1.6%), according to industry analyst Jato Dynamics.

This drop meant electric cars from Chinese-owned brands outsold those from the American firm, at 19,800 compared with 15,737. Most notable among them was Volvo, with 6529.
