The Tesla Model Y Thread

Tesla starts selling an LED light strip for the Model 3 and Model Y frunk

Tesla is now selling an LED light strip for the frunk of the Model 3 and Model Y. There's just one caveat - it's only meant for model years 2020 to 2024. Newer models will probably get their own version soon, as it's already available in China.

If you have a 2020 to 2024 model year, the LED light strip will set you back exactly $100. It connects directly to your Tesla's power supply, so it doesn't have a battery.

Spy photos reveal that Tesla's new, cheaper Model Y goes back to basics

Leaked images, first published by the popular Chinese auto blog "Garage 42," reveal what looks like a more affordable version of the Tesla Model Y. It seems this long-awaited vehicle is simply a stripped-down version of Tesla's best-selling electric SUV.

Looking at the interior spy shots, Tesla is making some big cuts. The giant, single-pane panoramic glass roof, a signature feature of the current Model Y, is gone. This change alone will cut material and manufacturing costs.

In the back, passengers will have to entertain themselves the old-fashioned way, as the rear screen has also been removed. The front center armrest area has been redesigned into a pass-through space, which could make the front cabin feel more open. Some things have been improved - the vehicle in the photos has traditional steering column stalks, a feature Tesla has removed in its newer models.

The cost-cutting continues on the outside. The most obvious change is at the front, where the sleek, continuous light strip has been removed. The headlights appear to have been moved higher up the fascia, and around back, the taillight design is also expected to be simplified, likely losing the central reflective strip that connects the two lights. These are calculated decisions to make the car easier and cheaper to build.

While the Tesla Model Y has been a sales champion in China, its throne is looking a bit wobbly. In the first half of 2025, Tesla sold 171,491 units of the Model Y in the premium segment, which includes vehicles priced above RMB 250,000 (about €29,660). That's impressive, but competitors are catching up fast.

Tesla's refreshed Model Y Performance finally breaks cover in California

Few vehicles can generate as much interest as a new Tesla, and for months, there's been a gap in the company's lineup. But now, the missing piece of the puzzle has been found cruising the streets of California. A camouflaged prototype spotted near Tesla's engineering headquarters in Palo Alto strongly suggests the high-performance version of the refreshed Model Y is getting ready for its official debut.

Sharp-eyed observers know what to look for, and Tesla isn't exactly subtle about its go-fast versions. The mystery electric SUV was sporting a set of 20-inch wheels that look identical to the "Plaid" style wheels, a design typically reserved for the brand's most powerful models. Peeking from behind those wheels were large, bright red brake calipers - another dead giveaway. These two clues combined leave little doubt that this is the long-awaited Model Y Performance.

In January 2025, Tesla launched the updated Model Y, bringing a few welcome changes. The refreshed model got a new front-end design with a sleek light bar, updated ambient lighting for the interior, and a rear screen for passengers, bringing it more in line with the updated Model 3 sedan. But when the order books opened for the new Model Y, the Performance trim was conspicuously absent, leaving enthusiasts and potential buyers wondering when the fastest version would return.

Tesla Model Y L is already heading to showrooms

Tesla is preparing to launch the larger version of its popular Model Y in China, in the hope to revitalize sales and compete in the country's booming market for family-sized electric cars. The new vehicle, named the Model Y L, adds a third row of seats and offers more space, directly targeting a segment where Tesla has faced growing competition from local automakers.

While Tesla has only said the Model Y L is "coming soon," promising a fall launch, some units have already been spotted at the company's service centers across China. This suggests that the official release and first customer deliveries are just around the corner. The launch comes at a critical time, as sales of the standard Model Y in China have been slowing down this year.

The new six-seat Model Y L measures 4,976 mm long, making it 179 mm longer than the standard five-seat model. It is also slightly taller at 1,668 mm and features a wheelbase stretched by 150 mm to 3,040 mm. This longer wheelbase is key to providing the necessary legroom for passengers in the new third row, transforming the crossover into a more practical vehicle for larger families. The width remains unchanged at 1,920 mm.

The new Model Y L comes with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain. Regulatory filings reveal a front motor producing 142 kilowatts and a more powerful rear motor at 198 kilowatts. Powering this setup is an 82 kWh ternary battery pack supplied by LG Energy Solution. According to China's testing cycle (CLTC), this combination is good for an estimated range of 751 km. It is important to note that CLTC range estimates are far more generous than the EPA or WLTP figures.

The six-seater Tesla Model Y L officially debuts in China

The much-anticipated Tesla Model Y L is now official in China, offering six seats instead of the standard five. The vehicle comes with a couple of cool new features, and it's technically the longest range from the entire Model Y lineup.

The Model Y L starts at RMB 339,000 ($47,180), making it slightly more expensive than the Model Y Long Range. It offers an 82 kWh battery supplied by LG Energy Solution, which is enough to earn the car a CLTC range of 751 km, just one kilometer more than the Long Range five-seater Model Y.

When it comes to dimensions, the Model Y L is significantly longer and slightly higher than the standard Model Y and also has a longer wheelbase. The Model Y L dimensions are 4,976 mm x 1,920mm x 1,668 mm (L x W x H), while the five-seater is 4,797 mm long, 1,920mm wide and 1,624 mm high.

Additionally, the Model Y L boasts 2,539 liters of storage space, but that is with the seats folded. Actual trunk space isn't listed.

When it comes to the seat features, the second and third-row seats can be folded independently and are electrically controlled. The first and second rows have seat ventilation, while heating is available on all seats. The second row also gets electric armrests.

6-seater Model Y for the US? Musk says it may not happen..

For American families hoping for a more spacious electric car, Tesla CEO Elon Musk delivered a familiar dose of whiplash. He finally acknowledged the existence of a larger, six-seat version of the popular Model Y, only to suggest in the next breath that it might never reach US production, all thanks to a self-driving future that remains stubbornly in the future.

The vehicle in question is the Model YL, a longer version of Tesla's best-selling electric car that recently launched in China. Given the Model Y's monumental success and the ravenous appetite for three-row SUVs in the United States, bringing the larger variant to America seems like the most obvious business decision since selling umbrellas on a rainy day.

Fans of the brand have been asking, and for a fleeting moment, they got an answer. Responding to a query on the social media platform X, Musk gave a tentative timeline, stating that US production for this variant wouldn't begin until the end of next year.

But in a stunning display of either long-term planning or a complete reality disconnect that might leave potential customers dizzy, Musk immediately followed up his production estimate with a massive caveat. "Might not ever," he added, "given the advent of self-driving in America."
