The Tesla Model Y Thread

Tesla Model Y gets cheaper across Europe

Tesla has just made the best selling EV in both Germany and France cheaper than it used to be. We're talking about the Model Y, which most Germans seem to prefer out of the company's roster, and prefer it over VW's offerings even. Same story for the French, it's not a Renault or Citroen model taking the cake, it's the Tesla Model Y.

You can now buy one in Germany with an up to 8.1% price reduction. This comes in response to the German government abruptly ending EV subsidies last month. The maximum discount can be taken advantage of if you opt for the Model Y Long Range, which is now €5,000 cheaper starting at €49,990.

The entry level version simply called Model Y got a 4.2% or €1,900 price cut and is now €42,990, while the top tier Model Y Performance got €5,000 cheaper just like the Long Range, and now starts at €55,990 but since the starting price was higher this only amounts to about 8% less.

Note this is an LFP battery model Y. Not sure if that makes a difference. Data gathered over 8000km of driving.

Tesla's iOS app now supports UWB for more secure digital key handling

An interesting new feature comes with the latest Tesla app for iPhones with version 2024.2.3. The app can now tap into the iPhone's UWB chip and use it for more advanced and secure Phone Key handling.

Previously, the Phone Key function on the Tesla app solely relied on Bluetooth. On supported iPhones and cars UWB allows for much more accurate positioning and protects against replay spoofing. This is an attack in which valid data transmission is fraudulently repeated or delayed if the attacker is able to intercept that transmission. In other words, someone can relay the broadcast from your digital key and unlock your Tesla. Although rare, they are still possible.

The app's changelog also says the UWB positioning is able to detect who's in the driver's seat in case two people with Phone Keys enter the vehicle. It's the same technology used in Apple's AirTags, after all.

Tesla China says there's no Model Y facelift in the 2024 pipeline

Shortly after Tesla released its facelift Model 3 many are expecting the Model Y to be the next, even if the Model S and Model X are due for a facelift more than the Model Y, as they are much older models. After all, the Model Y first launched back in 2019 while the rest were released prior to that.

Tesla China came out with an official statement saying that the company has no plans on updating the Model Y. Tesla also took the opportunity to remind its customers that this is the best time to buy the best-selling EV in the world.
