The Tornadoes, Cyclones, Hurricanes & Typhoons Thread.

The Philippines island chain is hit by many cyclones each year:

Watch: Free State woman’s stop to take pics ends in tornado capture

“I was on my way home from town and stopped to take pictures of the storm clouds when the tornado started forming. It was an amazing but also frightening experience.”

With these words, Tanya van Rooyen describes the moment she captured a video that has gone viral on social media. She recorded the footage at around 15:00, about 15km outside Heilbron in the Free State, on the Vegkop road.

She told Caxton Network News that it all happened in an instant. “The storm approached very fast and was accompanied by strong winds and heavy lightning. Moments after this video, heavy rain started to pour down.”

Significant casualties and damage from TC Gezani:
Cyclone Gezani made landfall on Tuesday, hitting the island's main port, Toamasina.

Madagascar's disaster management office said there was "total chaos" - reporting that houses collapsed in the impact zone, where the bodies were found. Neighbourhoods were plunged into darkness as power lines snapped, while trees were uprooted and roofs ripped off.

Gezani has passed into the Mozambique Channel, and is rapidly intensifying. There is significant uncertainty as to the exact track (speed and direction), but potential landfall in Inhambane Province is possible:

Much as this sucks for Moz, we can hope it either bounces off the coast and back into the channel and dissipates.

TC Gezani is about to make landfall over N Madagascar, as a powerful storm. It will gradually weaken over land, but has the potential to cross into the Mozambique Channel, and even intensify further and brush the coast of Mozambique:

Hadn't heard about this at all but was just looking at the satellite images for SA and saw what surely must be a cyclone making landfall in Moz.

Not quite 'landfall', but brushing the coast overnight on Fri 13th into Sat 14th. Also visible on the SAWS ship synoptic chart. 966hPa and 80kts at 0600Z:

Not a Tropical Storm, but a storm in the tropics, with severe flooding in Hawaii:
Some parts of the state received 40 to 50in (127cm) of rain in the last 10 days
The damage from the storms could exceed $1bn (£745m), according to Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi.
The island was in the grip of a "Kona Low", a slow-moving area of low pressure that pulls in warm, moisture-rich air across the Hawaiian islands, bringing heavy rain and flash flooding.

I haven't been following this season, but looks like a big one:
Howling winds and lashing rains are battering Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands as super typhoon Bavi makes landfall.

Packing winds of nearly 290km/h (180mph) and gusts of 350km/h, Bavi is moving over the Pacific islands, according to the US National Weather Service (NWS).
