The Truth about Un-capped ADSL

Well. Just created an account with M-Web.

I will keep everyone posted of the QoS from them.

Thanks for all the help, guys !!!

On mweb and have done 65GB so far. No issues. They do shape but ite VERY lenient. What I like is that I can get my shows during the day nice and quick to watch that evening, while on afrihost I only got it the next day. Im on 4mbit. My cousin says he is being throttled on afrihost 384 after 15GB.

Afrihost is throttling 4Mbps lines to 1Mbps when you cross over 30 gigs and not 60 gigs as claimed in their T&C's.

I think that sums it up very well. They are not allowed to decrease your speed at any point in the month if they advertise (and you're paying for) a 4096kbps uncapped service. False advertising in my eyes.

Sad thing is, they can. If you sign up with Afrihost, you accept their FUPs, AUPs and Terms and Conditions. Its 100% legal.

Do anyone know how one can get the editors to post an article?

I've already ranted about this elsewhere.

When is uncapped not uncapped?

Once IS get their hands on bandwidth from EASSY and that other line, then we can expect a true uncapped service from Afrihost.

confirmed, which is a blatant misuse of advertising claims. sad it's come to this, but then again this is africa

What option from MWEb are you on? The 65gb, were this torrents? I'm looking to move to MWEB but wants UNSHAPED and only the Business option "promises" this?

Well Ignus, I am in the same boat as you. This is UNACCEPTABLE...and yet I wanted to give them another try for the month of April. I'm sitting on just over 40gigs and I'm downloading at just over 512kbps from astraweb. So yeah....these guys are a bunch of f u c k e r s. I will move to Mweb at the end of this month to see how things are. But any ISP using IS as their backend, can suck my dick.

Hi everyone

Afrihost refunded me on a pro-rata rate for what I have used. I am ok with that. It is fair.

I am now about 24 hours on M Web and have downloaded just under 9 GB of data. This is a combination of private FTP downloads on port 21 and bit torrent.
I also play Battlefield and when I do, I obviously stop all downloads.

To measure bit torrent downloads is tricky:
The best way (I think) is to setup your client to allow up to 600 threads per download. That way, you should get your full download speed of 440 KB.
From what I can see on mweb (over the weekend) I get my full speed.
I will test this during business hours as well and let you know.

The easiest way to test http speed and your quality of service is to go to
trailers.apple.com
and download a trailer. Apple's website is ridiculous fast !!!
When I did this test, I got from Axxess and Afrihost 440 KB.
On mweb I get 460 KB !!!! This is amazing !

mweb caps your speed 20 KB faster than the others. Now this is nice. ;-)

So far, I am happy.

The only thing I really can complain about is mweb's online account portal.
It is the worst portal interface I have ever experienced in my life! A 5 year old web developer can do better in 3 hours!
Unbelievable. And it does not work from an Apple Mac using Safari. Ggrrr. This is annoying.

I send a long email to mweb about this. Hopefully they will spend a little money on getting their portal fixed.
If they do, then their call centre costs will drop and they will actually make more money...

And again. Thank you for all the good comments.

@ Wesley: I am reading your article right now and it looks good. Thanks for educating the general public.
