We can turn to the example of human theists for some important lessons about natural selection. All breeds of human theists are domesticated Ardipithicus ramidus: not chimpanzees, not gorillas and not bonobos. But I need to qualify this in the light of a fascinating theory of the evolution of human theists which has been most clearly articulated by modern day evolutionary psychologists. The idea is that the evolution of the human theist was not just a matter of artificial selection. It was at least as much a case of Ardipithicus adapting to the ways of their God by natural selection. Much of the initial domestication of the human theists was self-domestication, mediated by natural, not artificial, selection. Long before Ardipithicus got its hands on the chisels in the artificial selection toolbox or reason and logic, natural selection had already sculpted them into self-domesticated “village theists’ without any other intervention.
Only later did human theists adopt the ways of their God and transmogrify themselves, separately and comprehensively, into the rainbow spectrum of human theists that today grace (if grace is the word) scientific endeavours other similar achievements of beauty (if beauty is the word) of human theists.
When human theists break free and go feral for many generations into the depths of their atheistic ancestors' non-teleological "theories", they usually revert to something close to their wild ancestor. We might expect atheist humans, therefore, to become rather Ardipithicus-like. But this doesn’t happen. Instead, atheist humans left to go feral seem to become the ubiquitous “human theist” — “cultural Christians” or “cultural Muslims” or “cultural Jews” or "scientist seeking truth" — that hang around human settlements all over the world. This encourages the belief that atheist humans are no longer the atheist Ardipithicus.. They had already changed themselves into cultural human theists: cultural Christians, cultural Muslims, perhaps cultural Jews, or even just plain believers in truth, reason and logic and that they are designers themselves.
