The UK was in the same boat.

p.s. I got broadband adsl in the uk when it came out, line rental was £10 a month (including phone), £150 "once-off activation fee" (wtf for I have no idea) and £35 a month for 512 uncapped.

so, monthly cost was £45inc telephone= ~$85 at that time.

If they were prepared to write a artcile about how expensive THAT was, then writing one about the state of s.a. should be a breeze:-)
 
I was paying R460 for a 1mbit Cable line in 2002 when I left for SA. Allowing for 3% (UK) Inflation thats R500 today. I pay Just over R1000 today for a 1mbit ADSL line with 3GB cap. Granted there was no cap on the UK service but the cable company banned running FTP servers/Web Servers and P2P on your side, so they pretty much restricted you to email and Web browsing. So all in all Telkom is as it stands twice as bad as it was in the UK then, and only 3 years ago.

This is what gives me hope, so long as LLU and proper competition comes into play. A bigger problem here is PC penetration this reduces the true market size which helped the price reductions in the UK.

We need cheap broadband and cheap internet devices to move this forward.
