Canon has made the EOS 7D Mark II official, headlining its Photokina announcements. The 7D II features a 20.2MP APS-C sensor, increased from the 7D's 18MP. It also presents an upgrade over its predecessor in autofocus specification with next-generation Dual Pixel AF, 65 all cross-type points, as well as a faster 10 fps burst shooting rate.

Also included is 1080/60p HD video recording and a new 150,000-pixel RGB+IR 252-zone metering sensor. On the hardware side, it offers a 3" Clear View II LCD with 1040k dots of resolution, 100% coverage optical viewfinder and a pop-up built-in flash.

The Canon EOS 7D Mark II will be available in November body-only for $1799. Bundled with an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM it will cost $2149.

Can't wait for the first reviews. Still very happy with my 7D.
 
Some nice upgrades. I see GPS is built in, and it has a small bump in the frame rate and overall resolution.

At first glance I thought the upgrade was rather small (looking at base specs it's only 2 fps quicker on continuous, and 2MP more in resolution), but the devil is in the detail.

e.g. "Canon says this flicker detection feature ensures images are only shot when light levels are at their brightest level – intelligently analysing the light source and detecting flickering light the eye can’t see."

Looks like lots of extra goodies are being packed in there.

The main reason why I wasn't using the 7D was the slow fps rate.

Those extra 2mp are actually more of a curse than a blessing for me.

I don't use continuous much (don't really use a DSLR much at all - fiance's camera, and I'm not an avid photographer) but is 10 a really good upgrade over 8? I imagine the electronics behind it are being pushed quite hard, but I would have thought they would be looking at slightly higher numbers than that, this many years later.

I suppose this is why you don't just compare on base specs... they can be misleading. Reading a few articles online, there seem to be a whole stack of upgrades here.

For someone like me you literally cannot have too high of an fps in a dslr because a lot can happen between frames.

Incidentally that's where the higher MP count bites me in the arse.

Hence I was initially surprised that it was only up to 10. I imagine that this is more a limitation of the storage than the camera processor.

hahaha... yes

I wonder if the duel cards are used for redundancy, increased storage, or if you could configure them for faster writes (i.e. throw one image onto card A, the next onto card B)?

I'd imagine really useful for geotagging the pics. To be able to pinpoint not just when, but where a photo was taken is incredibly useful meta data. I imagine it could also be useful in keeping the clock in sync (GPS time won't be affected by clock drift). Not sure that they would have enabled that, but it would be trivial.

Never mind online services that allow you to share where you took the photo, there are a number of useful things I can think of:

Animal photographers contributing sightings (far better than camera phones which suck for wildlife photography)
Locating photos you've taken by region, and not just time (bounding box search)
Pointing out exactly which point you took that photo from (was it this lookout point, or that one?)

Many more uses will pop up once people get it. It's not like GPS chips are expensive these days. They should add a digital compass and accelerometer in there for good measure... so you can see what direction and angle you were facing. That would make crowd sourced stitching really easy.

Consider the camera's price. You have to spend 4x as much for that extra 2fps...

A big part of what goes into that high frame rate is processing power. Thing how long it takes even a high-end computer to render a 20MP RAW file. My Quad core i7 takes about half a second in Aperture. Now, your camera has to do that in less than 1/10th of a second, and dump it out to card. The fastest CF cards are still only around 90MB/s, and SD is still slow as treacle, so all of this has to go into the buffer, which need to be pretty big, which adds more cost.

Assuming it's the same as the 5D3, you have the following options:

  • Record to one card - either the primary you select, or whichever you put in if there's only one card
  • Same as above, but when there are two cards, automatically continue on the secondary card once the primary is full
  • Record RAW and JPEG to seperate cards, if you're shooting RAW+JPEG
  • Record each image (RAW, JPEG or both) to both cards simultaneously. Note, this does not record Video to both cards - that still goes to the primary card, which is the card you choose to view from when using play back mode.

One more year, so save your pennies ;)

Side note: I was kind of expecting the 7D2 to have 4K video - I didn't think Canon would let Panasonic have the market to itself for another year.

Honestly I don't know at this stage. $1800 on a 7Dmk2 is $1800 less I have to put towards my next 1Dx or 200-400 f/4. I've got time though. Availability means that cricket season will be just about over by the time it hits the shelves and that's the only time I want to go longer with my glass.

So… put me down as firmly undecided. :)
