Why should we improve broadband penetration?
I know a political economist, and I’m trying to explain to her the importance of reliable, universal and affordable broadband access.
South Africa is likely to see (or not!) black-outs for years to come, crime is out of control, HIV and AIDS are prevalent and the neighbours are restless. A lot of people don’t have clean, running water, some don’t have electricity, a lot live in shacks. What good is ‘broadband’ to someone who sleeps on the floor with his whole family in a single room?
Forget about web2.0 and MyADSL and all the other toys. Is the internet – like next generation gaming
– merely a luxury that developing nations like South Africa should sideline in favour of more important goals?
Geeks and rich people care about the internet. But how do we make it relevant to the rest of South Africa?
